- EGNOS is the European SBAS system augmenting GPS L1 signal over the ECAC area.- EGNOS was born to meet stringent Aviation requirements (ICAO) for all phases of flight.- EGNOS is fully interoperable with all other SBAS worldwide.
EGNOS was born for Aviation

EGNOS services characteristics
30/03/2015
EGNOS SiS is unique compliant with ICAO SBAS standards. The same SiS for OSand SoL services.
EGNOS OS service provides improvement of positioning accuracy by correctingseveral error sources affecting the GPS signals for users equipped with an appropriateGPS/SBAS enabled receiver for which no specific receiver certification is required.
EGNOS SoL service provides improvement of positioning accuracy and integrityto users equipped with a certified GPS/SBAS enabled receiver making it usesuitable for safety critical applications.
EDAS is the single point of access for the GNSS data collected and generated by theEGNOS ground infrastructure through internet in real and non-real time toauthorised users (e.g. added-value application providers).
Position Integrity (bounding of the position errors ) is key for Civil
Aviation and the main “differentiator” of SBAS w.r.t. GPS

EGNOS market devices segments
SBAS-certified devices for commercial, regional, general & business aviation.
SBAS usage in safety-critical devices supporting signaling (high and low density lines) and non-safetydevices supporting other applications (asset management and passenger information).
SBAS devices to support general navigation, Automatic Identification System (AIS), the Long RangeIdentification and Tracking (LRIT) System and port operations (including portable pilot units)
SBAS devices used for tractor guidance, automatic steering, asset management and Variable RateTechnology (VRT).
Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs) SBAS enabled used for navigation; Road User Charging (RUC), Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS); Other devices supporting Intelligent Transport Systems.
SBAS devices to support land /marine surveying and mapping.

Applications
NPA (Non-Precision Approaches)APV (Approach Procedures with Vertical Guidance)
EGNOS benefits
Improved flexibility and enable advanced arrival, approach and departure procedures;
Improve accessibility and operational capability by reduction of Decision Height down to 250 ft.
Reduce environmental impacts and costs by enabling more efficient routes, time and fuel savings, and lower CO2 emissions;
Infrastructure rationalization: Enabling VOR, NDB, ILS Cat I removal/back-up reducing the associated installation / maintenance costs
Increase safety by allowing IFR approaches with vertical guidance at difficult locations or weather conditions.

Real examples of EGNOS benefits in aviation
• Charleroi airport (Belgium)o EGNOS reduces decision height minima 35% -> reduction in DDC of 48% (positive
economical impact )o “Costs saving” owing to the potential reduction in ground infrastructure cost.
Cost of an EGNOS based procedure = yearly ILS maintenance
• Aurigny operatoro Flying mainly to Alderney airport (Channel island, UK) non-ILS -> EGNOS allows savings of
4K€ in 5 of each 100 approaches (20k€ per 100 flights). Aurigny makes 3500approaches/year -> savings of 700k€/year. 6 Trislander equipped (120k€ each) -> In oneyear the investment for EGNOS was recovered.
• NetJets operatoro Destinations are mostly ILS equipped. 90k€/year of benefit for a fleet of 17 airplanes. SBAS
equipment is 60k€ each. In less than 10 years the investment is recovered (not consideredthan new LPVs implies more benefits).

Thanks to current EGNOS performance, users can also benefit from EGNOS for wide range of applications in the multimodal domains.
Most of the CBAs performed in aviation in Europe have concluded that …
Investment in EGNOS adoption/use means profits
Applications
Complements existing ground-based systems on rivers and other inland waterways
Commercial and Leisure crafts Search and Rescue activities Port operations and Environmental protections
EGNOS benefits
Enhances precise positioning, especially in tight waters
Makes navigation easier and safer
Help to improve traffic management and vessels tracking
Help with casualties
Improve seaport operations, offshore exploration and exploitation, and fisheries
• There were 1,4 Mil shipments of GNSS receivers in 2014
• 63 % of these are SBAS-enabled : 0.9 Mil
30/03/2015
Applications
High Density Command & Control Systems, Low Density Line Command & Control Systems, Asset Management Passenger Information systems on-board
EGNOS benefits
Enhances precise positioning
Infrastructure on-ground rationalization
Improvement traffic management and tracking in real time
Reduction signalling and operational costs
Full signalling capabilities on rural/low density lines combining EGNOS with Inertial Navigation Systems
30% of trains in use worldwide will be equipped with GNSS for some purpose by 2022.
30/03/2015
Applications
VRT (Variable Rate Technology) Tractor guidance for operations such as spraying Individual livestock positioning and supervised tracking Virtual fencing Post-harvest pick-up
EGNOS benefits
Enhance precision
Save time and reduce fatigue
Extend equipment lifetime by optimising its use
Optimise crop yields and increase profit margins
Eliminate waste and over-application of fertilisers and herbicides
• In Europe, there is a total of 125,000 GNSS-enabled tractors, harvesters and threshers
• 97.7% of these are EGNOS-enabled: 121,000
• 66.9% thereof are used for Tractor Guidance: 82,000

Investing between 2500€ - 5500€ on a EGNOS guidance unit and sprayer with sectioncontrol, farmers are able to save around 4% in the establishment of the crop cost.
With a standard farm of 250 ha, which are quite common in dry areas1. The use of guidance is paid back in the first year;2. The use of auto-guidance to steering wheel is paid back in just two years.
If the farm is bigger (>250 ha), then benefit is increased.
Real example of EGNOS benefits in agriculture
EGNOS guidance brings a clear benefit for farmers.
30/03/2015
Applications
Mapping applications where meter accuracy is adequate GIS applications Measuring for farm registers and field boundary measuring Forestry measuring Street furniture measuring – Asset management (EDAS)
EGNOS benefits
Enhance precision
Keeping costs on effective level – most of receivers SBAS enabled
Permit real-time positioning
Provides system integrity, supplying information on the reliability of GPS signal
• There were 190,000 shipments of GNSS receivers in 2014
• 83 % of these are SBAS-enabled: 158,000
30/03/2015
EGNOS was found the best solution among the rest
EGNOS equipment cost: 1200€
DGPS (Real Time) is rejected because GPRS coverage does not reach the complete area
Carrier Phase L1/L2 (Post-Processing) is dismissed because of difficulties to find nearreferences stations for correction tasks.
RTK discarded also because GPRS coverage does not reach to the complete area. Equipmentcost: 7000 €
Real example of EGNOS benefits in mapping
Positioning of large amount of objects with low accuracy in open areas and spread overvast geographical areas.
30/03/2015
Applications
Road User Charge Systems Pay –as-you-drive insurance schemes, eCall Fleet management systems Tracking of dangerous goods or transport of livestock Management of oversized or irregular loads Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
EGNOS added value
Enhance precision
In case of RUC not need a capital-intensive toll gate infrastructure, adapted over time
Traffic management can focus on road classes, or focus on specific vehicle types
Can offer variety of value-added services
End users save money by using PAYD service
RUC Slovak RepublicThe largest satellite based toll collection in Europe has been covering • almost 17,770 km of Specified Road Sections in
the Slovak Republic,• Including 660 km of highways;• 3,630 km of 1st class roads;• Other 3,640 km of 2nd class roads and• More than 9,840 km 3rd class roads.
