Tip of the week

Stretch your back

The more hours youspend studying, the

tighter your shouldersand back will likely get.

One way to preventshoulder and back pain

is to stretch. A quickonline search will returnmany suggestions, whichwould be good to do atleast once a day. The

lower back, shoulders, and neck are especiallyimportant. If you have

lower back pain,stretching your

hamstrings could help.

Nick Doherty is a 4L in Section 7B of the EveningDivision. He is the President of the Suffolk UniversityGaming Law Association, SBA Federal Bar AssociationLiaison and Research Assistant for Professor JeffWittenberg. Nick received a bachelor’s degree fromBoston College and currently serves as the Chief ofStaff for a Massachusetts State Senator.

What is your role in your job at the state house?

As Chief of Staff, I wear a number of different hats butmy primary focus is to manage the legislative policiesand budget priorities of the Senator. In this role, Iserve as the principle contact for issues related toconsumer protection and licensing, which range fromthe 31 boards at the Department of ProfessionalLicensure to the liquor laws under the purview of the

Treasurer’s office and the implementation of simulcasting capabilities and live horseracing days which is overseen by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. In

addition to my own responsibilities, I oversee the Senator’s staff and keep himbriefed on current events related to the district and across the Commonwealth.

How is the time balance between work and school?I am incredibly fortunate to work with a boss who understands the commitment lawschool requires. Sometimes, the biggest challenge is transitioning from a workmindset to a classroom setting. It’s only a short walk between the law school andState House and there are days when I need to stand outside the building andmentally wall off responsibilities at work so I can focus on course materials.

What are you most looking forward to upon graduation?Being able to relax on a Sunday.

Do you have any plans for after graduation?I’d like to stay connected with the government in some capacity and am alsopursuing non-traditional fields of law to utilize my degree. As for some traveling,

nothing is planned but I have kept a bucket list of places I want to visit when schoolis over and my schedule is freed up.

What do you enjoy doing outside of law school?During the workweek there isn’t much free time between work and school but I tryto make the Suffolk Law skate on Monday nights as often as my schedule permits. On the weekends, I take an early morning hike through the Blue Hills with my twogolden retrievers to enjoy some fresh air before heading to the library and alwayswatch Don Cherry on the Coach’s Corner during Hockey Night in Canada.

Have you focused on a certain area of law at Suffolk?I tailored my non-core courses around subjects where the law intersects with publicpolicy. For any student interested in pursuing a career in government, I wouldstrongly suggest taking courses taught by Professor Al Roberts and Professor TimWilkerson. Both professors provided a unique perspective on government and howpolicy gets shaped, through the legislative and regulatory processes, which has trulyhelped me become a better staff member.
