• Students should read assessment criteria carefully so that they can understand what they need to do / should not do in order to achieve a higher score

• The focus of SBA is on developing and assessing the speaking ability of students

• Students should NOT memorise or read aloud their presentations

Preparation stage:

• Read the task carefully and brainstorm some ideas for the task

• Choose two to three main ideas and think of supporting/additional details for each main idea

• Write down only the key words of these main ideas and supporting details on notecard

• Pay attention to how ideas should be organised

• Spend time on building up their English foundation

• Learn how to pronounce the words accurately

• Use vocabulary and sentence patterns that they are familiar with

• Build up vocabulary

• Be more proactive and take the initiative to speak more English whenever possible

Before the assessment:

• Go through assessment criteria with students so that they know the assessment requirements

• Tasks should be appropriate to students’ level

• Do NOT give too much preparation time to avoid plagiarism / memorised speech

During assessment:

• Match students’ performance with assessment criteria (i.e. descriptors that best describe the performance) vs. rank ordering

• Make notes on assessment record for giving feedback after the assessment

• Ask impromptu questions to scaffold / verify students’ performance, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can schools conduct more than one assessmentand submit the better score for each student?

Yes.

2. Can different classes / students in the same class be given different tasks, e.g. some classes do IP while some GI, or some students in the same class do Part A while some Part B?

Yes. School Coordinators should coordinate with subject teachers to ensure consistent policies.

3. Are students allowed to take the SBA online usingZoom / Google Meet?

Yes. Decisions should be made by school coordinator andrelevant subject teachers. Face-to-face assessment and onlineassessment acceptable.

If time allows, schools should consider face-to-faceassessment as this allows teacher assessors to monitor andsupport the students better.

4. Can students submit a recorded performance?

No. Assessment has to be conducted in real-time by subject teacher.

5. Can students take part in SBA without wearing their masks when they take part in face-to-face assessment?

Safety measures suggested by EDB and CHP should be followed. Safety precautions such as social distancing requirements and wearing masks should be adhered to at all times.

Suggestions for Running Within-school Sharing Sessions for S5 and S6 teachers

• Who should attend: Teacher assessors of the same form

• Procedure: 1. Start with anchor set (Green DVD)

2. View the samples (H, M & L) from different classes

3. Assessors discuss students’ performances (give enough time for this)

4. Adjust marks if necessary to ensure accurate rank ordering as moderation will impact on all students in the moderation group / school

• Focus should be on the students’ PERFORMANCE in the assessment, not impression of students’ abilities / efforts / attributes, etc.

Submission of samples of performance (1) (for School Coordinators)

After all assessments have been conducted:• School Coordinator should hold a within-school

standardization meeting to ensure accurate rankordering

• School Coordinator should attend inter-schoolsharing sessions, adjust marks after the sharingsession if necessary

• Panel Chairperson to indicate the 6 samples on theSBAS (2 high, 2 middle and 2 low) that bestrepresent the performance of the school

• Print the school code label on the online platform• The six clips should be submitted to the HKEAA

office by 31 March 2022

Submission of samples of performance (2) (for School Coordinators)

• Choose 6 clips

• 2 high, 2 middle and 2 low levels performances (Do NOT include performances with irregularities)

• Performances of the students recorded and duplicate the performances on a VCD or DVD

• Video files should be playable using common freeware such as Real Player, Windows Media Player, etc.

• IP or GI will be acceptable

• Teacher should indicate clearly on the Assessment Records the students whose performances are selected

• For GI clips , teachers should indicate clearly on the assessment records the students they want the DCs to focus on (e.g. the 2nd one from the right; High)
