DESCRIBES CARTWHEEL AS TREND SETTER

The Youth of this country of which students of professional colleges form a huge chunk, should play a defining role in shaping the destiny of India, said Pasam Yadagiri, a senior journalist and Editor of the Hyderabad based news channel TNN. He was addressing the students and a large galaxy of professors after inaugurating the maiden issue of Anuraga Group's in-house magazine “Cartwheel” on 5, September at an impressive function held at CVSR College of Engineering. Yadagiri struck an emotional chord with the students when he reminded them of the hardships of their parents, who like most of the people in our society, struggle to make children realise their dreams of a better future. He urged the students to focus on their learning and also to keep an eye on the developments taking place in our society which would help them grow up as responsible citizens.

Yadagiri underlined the pressing need for professionally edited campus magazines like 'Cartwheel' and patted the management for its visionary effort. He said that the beautifully produced 'cartwheel' w as br i mmi ng w i th useful information and promising to be a trend setter in the genre.

Dr. P. Rajeshwar Reddy thanked Pasam Yadagiri for gracefully

Reinforcing my belief and justifying my expectations the positive feedback to the inaugural number of 'Cartwheel' has been overwhelming, to put it politely. In fact the all round appreciation after almost a month of its release, still floods in from even quarters we least expect. Senior professors, thoughtful parents and prominent journalists endorsed the concept of 'Cartwheel' and encouraged us to go further ahead with the path breaking idea.

Though the enthusiasm to contribute and write for 'Cartwheel' among Anurag students and teachers is visible it generally seems to me that most of them need to take a second look at the content and the format as presented in the first issue of 'Cartwheel'. I do not expect our students or teachers to be born writers; I trust they can still push the pen along in better fashion.

Please do not lose heart if your maiden work fails to appear in Cartwheel. Try to sharpen your skill. Try to read and understand the small secrets of good writing, good words and I am sure you will soon smile on seeing your name in your magazine. You should also feel free to talk to the cartwheel editorial coordinators who are always willing to help you.

There is a need to augment campus-communication models such as Cartwheel in many colleges and even in Universities. Anurag Group hopes to lead this from the front by putting up a trendsetting example. Happy Cartwheeling!

I AM

overwhelmed.

But we need to

do more.

The college was located in the heart of the city, at Nampally. The degree college ran two shifts, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, to facilitate working students who aspired to do a Bachelor's degree. I had to cross a busy road and make my way through a cluttered lane to reach the old darkened building that housed the college on its upper floors.

The very first day was eventful. I entered the classroom to find an assorted group of students lounging about the benches, very comfortable in their surroundings. I felt like an insect under a microscope, being examined and assessed by at least thirty pairs of eyes. A nice “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen” brought them hastily to their feet and they greeted me in unison. I smiled to myself remembering graffiti on the back of an autorickshaw that said “Give respect and take respect”.

The attitude of the students changed immediately and they sat upright and participated in the classroom activities. 'So far, so good', I thought to myself. Subsequently, I was waiting near the office room (there were no fancy waiting halls) when I heard a commotion in the corridor. I couldn't believe my eyes. There were a bunch of boys roughing each other up. Suddenly, a few of them started running downstairs. They were being chased by three soldiers carrying a wooden bench determined to crush their bones to dust or so it seemed. The scene evoked images of Menelaus and his minions trying to batter down the walls of Troy; of Joshua urging the Israelites to tear down the walls of Jericho; of the Berlin wall being demolished by angry yet jubilant Germans; and finally with a sigh, rested on the wailing wall of Jerusalem, dividing a race and a nation. All the while, the staff were mute spectators to the drama being played out. In the face of such drama, the college staff was reduced to mute spectators. Soon, the erring students were admonished and chased out of college. As they were leaving, I overheard them making dire threats to finish business in home territory. On making enquiries, it transpired that a senior belonging to a certain community was busy in the rest room when he was bolted in by another student belonging to a different community.

A fairly harmless incident, could have been an oversight on the part of the junior, but, it reached dramatic proportions because the protagonists belonged to two different communities. It made me think. What led to this drama? Clearly, the students had no real intention of beating each other up but wanted to get across a message 'Don't mess with us'…

These “Half-men” were from a deprived background. Life was a constant struggle to make both ends meet. No doubt, politicians had been setting off one community against another for years, for political gain. When stomachs are empty and tempers frayed, reason takes a back-seat. Are such displays a form of territory marking? Or was it a reality show? One hopes that a good education system will cure the country of such illnesses.

The familiar juice bundi (cart) was there with pictures of various Gods and Goddesses urging you to buy the fruit juices that were served. There were bottles of different coloured liquids strung around the cart, a reminder of the diverse cultures of India.

Step 1: Accept Responsibility

Step 2: Think win – win

Step 3: Choose your words carefully.

Step 4: Don't criticize and complain

Step 5: Smile and be kind

Step 6: Put Positive Interpretation on other People 's Behaviour

Step 7: Be a good listener

“Responsibilities gravitate to the person who can shoulder them” – n Elbert HubbardPeople who don't accept responsibility shift the blame to their parents, teachers, and genes, God, fate, luck or the stars. For evil to flourish good people have to do nothing and evil shall flourish – Edmund Burke

When we serve our customers, our families, our employers and employees, we automatically win.

A person who says what he likes usually ends up hearing what he doesn't like. Be tactful. Excessive talking does not mean communication. Talk less; listen more.

A critic is like a back – seat driver who drives the driver mad.Receiving criticismTake it graciouslyEvaluate. If it makes sense, accept and implement.Accept it immediately and empathetically.Always thank the other person for criticizing in constructive manner.

In the course of the day, some of your acquaintances may be too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours. Nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give.

In the absence of sufficient facts, people instinctively put a negative interpretation on other's actions or inactions. Some people suffer from “paranoia”; they think the world is out to get them. That is not true.

Listening shows caring. When you show a caring attitude toward another person, that person feels important. When he feels important, he is more motivated and more receptive to your ideas. An open ear is the only believable sign of an open heart. – David Augsburger.

Step 8: Be enthusiastic

Step 9: Give ho nest and sincere appreciation

Step 10: When we make a mistake, we should accept it immediately and willingly.

Step 11: When the other person realizes and admits, that he has made a mistake, congratulate him and gi ve him a way out to save face.

Step 12: Discuss but don't argue.

Step 13: Don't gossip.

Step 14: Turn your promises into commitments

Step 15: Be grateful but Do Not except Gratitude

Step 16: Be dependable and practice loyalty

Nothing great is ever achieved without enthusiasm. – Ralph Waldo's Emerson

The psychologist William James said – “One of the deepest of human beings is the desire to be appreciated. The feeling of being unwanted is hurtful”. “The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis but rather the feeling of being unwanted”. – Mother Teresa

Arguing is like fighting a losing battle. Even if one wins, the cost may be more than the victory is worth. Emotional battles leave a residual ill will even if you win.I learned a long time ago never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty and besides, the pig likes it. – Cyrus Ching.

“Small people talk about other people, mediocre people talk about things, and great people talk about ideas.”

Commitments says – “I am predictable in the unpredictable future”The most important commitment we ever make is to our values.Commitment leads to enduring relationships through thick and thin. It shows in a person's personality and relationships.

Gratitude would rank among the top qualities that form the character and personality of an individual with integrity. Ego stands in the way of showing gratitude. A gratitude attitude changes our outlook in life. With gratitude and humility, right actions come naturally.

The old adage, “An ounce of loyalty is worth than more than a pound of cleverness,” is universal and eternal.

STEPS FOR A

POSITIVE PERSONALITY

Step 17: Avoid bearing grudges. Forgive and forget

Step 19: Practice humility

Step 20: Be understanding and caring

Step 21: Practice courtesy on daily basis, Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength. – Eric Hoffer .

Step 22: Develop a sense of humour

Step 23: Don't be sarcastic and put others down

Step 24: To have a friend, be a friend.

Step 25: Show empathy

John Kennedy once said, “Forgive the other person but don't forget their name.” “You cheat me once, shame on you; you cheat me twice, shame on me.”Step 18: Practice Honesty, Integrity and Sincerity.

Many years ago, a rider came across soldiers who were trying to move a heavy log without success. The corporal was standing by as the men struggled. The rider asked the corporal why he wasn't helping. The corporal replied, “I am corporal. I give orders.” The rider dismounted, went up and stood by the soldiers and as they were lifting the log, he replied them. With his help, the log got moved. The rider quietly mounted his horse and went to the corporal and said, “The next time your men need help, send for the Commander – in – chief”. After he left, the corporal and his men found out that the rider was George Washington.

When someone blushes with embarrassment , when someone carries away an ache, when something sacred is made to appear common, when someone's weakness provides the laughter, when profanity is required to make it funny, when a child is brought to tears or when everyone can't join in the laughter, it's a poor joke.- Cliff Thomas

Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and wrong. Because some time in our lives we would have been all of these ourselves. – Lioyd Shearer, 1986.

We have all heard the oft repeated story of the cuckoo and its little baby-bird. The fledgling was happy in its world, with its mother –the cuckoo. But everything changed when the cuckoo told the little bird that it was not its mother, but it would have to go and search for its own mother. That sounds so interesting right! I began to compose that tale into a poem.

SEARCH FOR YOUR MOTHER Go and search go and search Lovely dwarf go and search Go and search go and search For your mother go and search! She is so auburn Her voice is very sweet The dwellers of here used to listen to her song Go and search go and search Lovely dwarf go and search She is like the nightingale But not the nightingale The dwellers here used to listen to her song Go and search go and search Lovely dwarf go and search Go and search go and search For your mother go and search!

Wondering why have I written this poem? Well, soon after finishing my Intermediate, I was lost- just as the little bird went in search of her mother. I needed another mother (college) who could nurture me and help me move onto the next stage of my life. My search was indeed a fruitful one. I found Anurag Engineering College at Kodad. Thanks to this wonderful place that is providing me with the food of knowledge. I am growing each day into a more confident, mature and independent individual. I am fully aware that I am still a fledgling. But very soon I will spread my wings and take flight into the soaring blue skies. But high up there, deep down in my heart, there will always be a silent prayer, thanking God for blessing me with such a wonderful Alma Mater.

POETRY

Who says he dosen't exist in this world,

He is still there in the dark shadows of walls,

He is still there at the end of the road,

He is still there waiting for somebody,

He is still there holding a painful heart,

He is still there to come back,

Who says he doesn't exist in the world,

His soul still roams round the world, searching for a new life,

Looking for that love just waiting for him,

Searching for a person to welcome him with a warm heart,

Who says he doesn't exist in this world.

A pioneer in the field of sound, Dolby will be remembered as the man who took the hiss and the pops out of sound recordings. With a fortune of $2.4 billion at his death, Dolby truly did make silence golden. During mid-1960s, a young electrical engineer Ray Dolby was not satisfied with the hissing, pops and seeping in sounds while recording. \

In 1966 he was able to perfect a noise reduction system that eliminated all those imperfections. Thanks to this innovativeness, sound recorders were free to produce tracks that sound clearer than if you heard it performed live, or songs that could blow you out of your seat with bass and power.

Since the 1960s, Dolby Laboratories has been a leader in audio innovation. Beginning with Dolby noise reduction, a form of audio compression and expansion that reduces background hiss in tape recording, Dolby Laborator i es has devel oped many groundbreaking technologies, advancing the science of audio reproduction.

Dolby Labs also blazed a trail in business models by mainly choosing to license technologies rather than make consumer products itself, making money from royalty payments from its partners.

Dolby logos became a fixture on devices such as cassette tape players and at the beginning of movies. Over the years Dolby earned 50 patents, two Oscars, multiple Emmys and a Grammy. At a ceremony honoring Dolby last year, film editor Walter Murch said, “You could divide film sound in half: there is BD, Before Dolby, and there is AD after Dolby.” He is survived by his wife, 47-year-old Dagmar and two sons Tom and David.

With his death, Dagmar assumes his fortune and is placed on the Forbes 400 list. Dolby, who received a Ph.D degree in physics from Cambridge in 1961, worked at tape-recording pioneer Ampex Corp before forming his own company in 1965. When you think of high quality sound, you think of Dolby.

Md. Riyaz Final year ( Civil),

Anurag Engineering College, Kodad.

I am Md. Riyaz-ul Haq but friends call me Riyaz with love and affection.

Everybody has twists in life. I have also faced a twist in my life.

I came to Hyderabad from Patna by “Patna Express” with my beloved brother to

roam and visit the monuments in Hyderabad. After coming to Hyderabad I came

to know that, I hadn't really come to see the monuments, but to study in Andhra

Pradesh.

Just rubbish…………. My brother joined me in school for 10th class and

Intermediate in Suryapet. Afterwards, I had appeared for the EAMCET exam and

finally I got a seat in Anurag Engineering College with the grace of God. I have

selected the Civil Engineering branch.

For the first 20 days after getting admitted into college, I understood nothing, I was

utterly confused. Then I went to my home in Bihar and told me that I would not

study this year and I would continue my studies next year. But my parents ordered

me to go back and continue my academics. After some days my parents told me

not to worry and that everything would be fine. They also gave me the option of

re-writing the exams just in case I failed in any of the subjects.

It sounded good to me and I was happy. I called one of my friends in Hyderabad

and shared everything that has happened with me. My friend encouraged me,

asking me not to worry as he was there for me.

Then I got to know that the first mid-semester exams of the first year had already

been held. I desperately went to the college and joined the hostel just before the

second mid-semester exams. I discussed my problems with my faculty members.

They encouraged and motivated me. Then I started attending college regularly.

Everybody was worried about my performance in the exams. But, when I saw my

results, I was pleasantly surprised. I had passed all the subjects in the first attempt

itself!

So, my fellow students, don't get disheartened and discouraged. Do not allow

anything to demoralize you. Face all your problems with a positive mind. Do not

ever give up. Success comes only to those who persevere. Always keep in mind

that our parents, teachers and friends are there to support us. With their help we

can overcome all the challenges of life.

DON' T GIVE UP. YOU WILL OVERCOME.

CAR ON FIRE

Mohammed YasarCivil Engineering,

Anurag Group. IV year,

Price? Rs.15.6 Crore

The Bugatti company was founded in the year 1909 by “Ettorebugatti” . The new version in Bugatti is “Bugatti Veyron Supersport”. It is the world's fastest “street legal” production car, designed by Jozef Kaban, having just wrested the crown from itself in a successful world record attempt on Volkswagen's Ehra Lessien test track. Bugatti's official test driver got new Veyron 16.4 Supersport to hit two-way average speed of 268mph (431kmph). Their top speed is electronically limited to 258mph in order to protect tyres from certain, expedient death.

To achieve higher velocity, it has undergone pretty significant “aerodynamic” rework, expansion and reshaping of front air intakes, the double diffuser and exhaust system that is arranged centrally, the use of NACA ducts set that gives the air to the engine. 4 turbos are larger, as are inter-coolers that feed them. A new seven-speed dual clutch gear box which shifts a gear in less than 150 milli-seconds been developed.

THE WORLD' S FASTEST CAR JUST GOT FASTER

The car has an intelligent four-wheel drive system which offers a good handling. Its engine type is 8.0-lt w-12 “quad turbo” charged and the transmission is 7 speed DSG automated manual. The curb weight is 4052 lbs (1837 kg) and it has an incredible power of 1200 hp @ 6400rpm. It has a torque of 1106 lb-ft (increase of 184 lb-ft).

The suspension also has been modified, with longer spring travel, stiffer and roll bars and new dampers. Bugatti is using a new structure for carbon fire monocoque that increases torsional rigidity while reducing weight. The car has a fuel tank capacity of 26.4gallon and fuel type super lead free 98 RON/ROZ with an emission of 867 g/km.

“Supersport” is a suffix that has been traditionally been associated with Bugatti. Since 2010 other supercar manufacturers have been trying to take away this title from Bugatti but this has not happened officially so far.

Bugatti has been a staple in the industry as one of fastest but most expensive cars the world has ever seen. Who will challenge and take away the record from Bugatti? Only time will tell. The price is 15, 63, 60,000 Indian rupees.

GOOD OR BAD:

IT IS PEOPLE' S CHINA!The journey to Beijing was almost like a fantasy for me as it was my long cherished dream coming true. The flying time from Hyderabad to Singapore was just nine hours, but it looked like a long march nay flight, to me as I was reading Chinese story book 'Harvest' by a revolutionary Writer Yezu. I was lost in the thoughts of China, the country which perplexes many people as it is projected in a complex and contrasting manner to the outside world. Secluded by the great wall from the rest of the world, it is not easy to get a feel of the life in China. Neither free press to tell the inside stories nor private television channels to spin tales and flash news with amazing speed exist there. Government decisions are not published and moreover there is no powerful opposition that monitors and regulates the state projects. No need for transparency. It is not democracy. While the communist bastions collapsed one after the other, how could China survive as a Communist country? On the other hand, China is world's 'Super Market'! It has a vibrant market economy and a potential market force while the other Third World countries are falling a prey to liberalization. From needles to digital wonders, China manufactures all goods, and its production force has jolted even the Asian giant Japan.

Despite its population density, China is making giant strides in production of goods, and if the trend continued so, it would emerge as a 'superpower' in the coming 10to15 years, feel market analysts.

Those closely following globalization project India and China as equal partners in the consequential prosperity. While India has great potential in the service sector, China tops in production. But what is the opinion of common people on these two countries? Who is the winner and who is the loser in this race? Visiting China was my dream, my long cherished ambition and my only fascination for a foreign land. When I got selected for India-China Fellowship of the India China Institute (ICI) New School, New York, I thought it would be a great opportunity to visit my dreamland. Visiting China may not be big deal as a tourist or as a researcher to attend a conference or seminar. But to study, understand and interact with the people society and culture is something different. India China Institute has offered me not only the fellowship, but also a great opportunity to fulfill my dream. I should thank my friends who encouraged me to apply for the fellowship.

It was 3.00 pm on 26May when I reached the Beijing airport. Surprisingly, I did not feel anything different or strange about the weather, air, people or their smiles. Everything was as usual and similar to my own country. Born and brought up in a small village in Telangana region in South India, which still retains the memories of the Chines Revolution, things looked but similar to me.

The airport had surprise-most of them were pleasant-for me in store. I proceeded towards the immigration desk. There were several counters as usually specified for me in store. I p0roceeded towards the immigration desk. There were several counters as usually specified for foreigners and natives like in any international airport. Just next to me in the queue showing my respect, but he did not respond. It is intriguing why the priests of all religions maintain a distance from the common people.

Suddenly I heard some sound from the crowd, a police officer calling loudly, waving his hand in my direction. Me! Why was he calling me? I am sure this is not US where people of color are identified for special security screening in the airports. Of my three visits to the US, twice I had such an experience when my boarding pass was stamped SSSS and I was specially screened. But this call was not for me, he was calling a woman with a child who stood before me in the queue. He reached us and told her, “Madam, you please go this way, you need not wait in the queue with your child”. I could not but appreciate the way an officer dealt with the passengers. He went to each and every woman with children and guided them to come out of the line and go straight to the counter. It was really heartening to see this and it struck me again that I was in a communist country. Suddenly I became cautious and curios to watch such exceptions and concessions based on humaneness. The officer in the immigration counter was a stern-looking man. He checked my papers and me twice and stamped the papers. Not a word. Unlike in America, where sweet talks, offering chocolate candies lead to taking of fingerprints at the airport.

On the desk there was an electronic board seeking your judgment on the immigration officer's performance-Very Satisfactory, Satisfactory, Not Satisfactory-are the three options and you are asked to press one button to appraise the Immigration Officer's work. Within ten minutes of landing, I could experience the kindness and bitterness of the communist regime of China.

I was planning to visit China much before the ICI official Residency in order to do some field work and collect material required for my research. However, I could not do so because of my responsibilities at the workplace. Even this time, I had to organize my official and personal schedules in such a way so as to fit in a trip to China ten days before the Residency. The Residency started from 6th June in Shanghai and ended on 17th June in Beijing. I landed in China on 26th May. I had already requested Mr. Yukun Gua, my friend and co-fellow, to coordinate my programme while I was in China before the Residency.

On the day I landed in China I stayed in a hotel in Beijing. Next day I had to go to the field work in rural parts of China with my New School colleague and collaborative partner, Yukuan Gua. Mr. Yukuan, a young journalist, is from Beijing. He is very enthusiastic, dynamic and interestingly he is a great admirer of democracy. He spends most of his time in rural areas. We had decided to visit some villages in Yunnan. But I did not know the exact plan and programme. I was handed over my ticket to the next destination in Yunnan province and a cell phone by Yukuan's wife as he had already left for Yunnan, and I had to join him on the following day.

LANGUAGE ONLY CHINESE!

Next day, I wanted to change the currency and could not find the bank. I asked each and every person I came across but they could not understand English to guide me. Finally I located the bank and to my surprise, none of the employees knew English. When I gave them the dollars, they converted them into RMB (Chinese currency) and showed me the calculator to tell me what I would get in exchange.Translator comes at a premium with a service charge of $500 to $1000 per day. It is very difficult to move about in China without learning their language as all transactions were in Chines and I could not hear a single word of English anywhere.

While Zejiang University professors contend that it is necessary for the multinationals to learn Chines language in the wake of globalization since they have to interact with the local people, people of Hangzhou city, which is considered the Silicon Valley of China, say that they are turning towards English for the benefit of next generations. During our visit to this southern city Hangzhou, we were taken around the 20-acre high-tech city, housing the world's major IT giants. It is the biggest high-tech zone of that country. The chief of the Hangzhou high-tech city, Mr. Cha Peng, spoke to us for one hour about the development in the centre with all the technical and scientific details, all in fluent Chinese without using a single English word. We had a translator but the original version sounded very impressive. I understood later that journalists, professors, officers, and vice chancellor level academics too speak only in Chinese and never bother to switch over to English.

FOOTPRINTS OF BUDDHA

My discovery of China started by tracing Gautama Buddha's footprints. Buddha is popularly known as Sajjamuni (Sakya Muni) in China. Without my knowledge I landed where Buddha entered into China. My friends told me that I was the first foreigner to visit that remote part of the great country. People generally visit Shanghai, Beijing or other provinces that have transport and technology connectivity. Yunnan is densely covered with forest and mountains. My purpose of visiting this area was to study traditional and ancient tribal community 'Yi' that lives there. The Yi community sociologically resembles the Indian caste system with the hierarchy of fourfold social order and similar cultural practices.

Jinghong is a beautiful place that resembles northern Thailand. It is to this geographic region that most Thai people trace their ancestral roots. Jinghong, literally means the Town of Dawn: “Jing” is town and “Hon” is dawn. It is said that when Sakyamuni (Gautama Buddha) arrive there it was daybreak, with cocks crowing. So he gave the name “the Town of Dawn” to that place. Like many people, I too was under the impression that there would be no religion in communist China. But I was wrong. Though there is no official sanctity attached to religion, religion does exist there. Buddhism and Confucianism are followed in rural China while in urban areas Christianity and even Islam can be seen. Many of the monasteries, churches, temples and mosques were closed during the Cultural Revolution but now they are slowly opening again.

HOOKED TO HUKOU

We stayed in a small lodge for two days at a country centre which is like a block headquarters in India, having 10 rooms. Four to five youth shared a room. On enquiry, we found out that they were migrant labourers who had come from the neighboring province. This being a remote place they were spared, otherwise their migration attracts penal action for violating hukou regulations. Hukou is like citizenship. They have identity cards, are supposed to work only in their native place, and are not supposed to move out for employment. It is basically a resident permit given by the Government of China. It is issued on family basis. Every family has a hukou booklet that records information about the family members, including name, birth date, relationship with each other, marital status, details of the spouse, address, details of the employer, etc. Work permit is needed to work at places other than one's native place, and the Village Public Security Officer issues it. This hukou proves very troublesome for the rural folk. Hukou was introduced to cater to the needs of rationing and social security (free medical care, education and provisions) during the socialist regime. It was aimed at developing villages as self-sufficient entities, to check migration and increase agricultural production. Before 1980, hukou was extremely crucial. People had to stay wherever they were born (where the hukou is) until they died. They could not migrate. They could travel, but there was no access to jobs, public services, education, or even food in other places. It was like visiting other places with a B-1 (business) type of visa-you can visit, but cannot work there (it is illegal), cannot go to school (not accepted), cannot go to hospital (without a hukou, you are not treated). Food could not be bought even if people hand money. They had to give Liangpiao So basically, people could survive with the Liangpiao they had for some time, but not long (especially because Liangpiao, issued by one province or city could not be used in another province or city) was issued only by the government of the place where4 one's hukou was registered.

NEW SOCIETY, EQUAL SOCIETY.

Keeping in view the unrest among rural folks, the state is now contemplating to bring back the 1970 policies. Last year, it announced a five-year plan named “New Socialist Countryside'. Under this plan, backward provinces and counties are notified, and subsidies running into millions are provided to farmers as subsidies for tractors and other agriculture implements supplied at half the cost. To give a fillip to education, hostel facilities and education are provided free of cost, and the budget for agriculture is increased sevenfold as compared to the 2005 funds. Plans are afoot to improve medical facilities in backward regions with medical insurance, huge amounts of pensions and subsidies. Decentralization of power down the village level is also under consideration. These steps are raising the hopes of rural folks for the past one year. Farmers will stop thinking of moving out of villages only if the fruits of reforms reach rural areas. “Our villages are like heaven. But globalization is giving the illusion that cities are top class and people in villages are feeling that the countryside is hell, comparatively”, said a journalist friend. There is no exaggeration in it, I thought, and I had seen it too.

I was surprised to see that a remote far-flung village we visited had a cement road; every hut (settlement) had a television dish antenna, a toilet and a school building. The interesting point is that the village we stayed was 3,000km from the national capital, 1,000km from the state capital, and was 1,000 meters above sea level. The icing on the cake came when international roaming cell phone started working there. Imagine a clear voice reception in the outskirts of Hyderabad! The state itself has started real estate business. There is an argument that party secretaries are the business agents. The kin of these leaders own industrial estates and new industrial zones-goes the argument.Still people have faith in party and the government. It may be because leaders like Cheng Yang have a say in the party and can convince people as they work closely with them.

Cheng Yang is the Deputy Mayor of Beijing. An engineer by training, he worked as a municipal planning officer before being elected as the Deputy Mayor. We invited him to our valedictory functions to deliver the keynote address. Our Director, Ashok Gurung, asked us to come in formal dress to the function. All of us went there in full suit, tie and shoes. A diminutive figure wearing an unkempt shirt emerged in the hall and we were taken aback when he was introduced as the Deputy Mayo and our chief guest.

With all humility, he apologized about his dress. “You could maintain dress code. I apologies for not being able to come like you. I know that this is a prestigious conference. Nevertheless, our government has decided not to use air conditioners unless the temperature goes beyond 26 degrees Celsius. Today it is much less than that. If I wear a suit and tie, we have to use A.C. to respect our own decision, I have to come like this”, he explained. Though he sounded humorous, he was thought-provoking. When we enquired about him, people said that he is a man of integrity. In an effort to transform Beijing into an excellent sports facility for the forthcoming Olympics, quite often he too joins labourers in their work.

Before leaving for Hyderabad, I called a friend in India who asked me, “Is there a red flag (Yerra Jenda) in China?”“It is not the colour of the flag (Jhenda) but the agenda of the country that matters”, was my reply, which is a fact.

IMPORTANT PART OF A STUDENT' S LIFEBOOKS ARE AN

In the midst of tedious classes and examinations, college students often have a difficult time choosing the best way to spend their free time. With Internet enabled phones and social networks vying for students' attention, they find an easy refuge online. This, coupled with widespread digitization of books, has left some wondering if libraries have become obsolete.

On the contrary, there has never been a time when a library, especially a college library is more important in the life of a student. A visit to the college library can either aid the students' course work, or prove to be a great respite from it. They can unwind while browsing shelves stocked with Oscar Wilde and Jane Austen, or find books that challenge their prejudices.

A library is no longer merely a place that stores books but also performs an array of other functions. Anna University's Central Library is visited by 1,000 students every day. Dr.Krishnamoorthy, a librarian, says that undergraduate students use the library mostly to refer to textbooks, while the postgraduate students come in for projects and research.

Anna University has embraced digitization by signing a MoU with the UGC, which gives the library access to UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium. The library is also a member of INDEST-AICTE Consortium. UGC-Infonet and INDEST allow students access to a large database of online journals and research papers. The library offers over 32,000 e-journals and 32,400 back volumes. A large number of students choose to stay on campus to avail themselves of the rich resources offered by the library.

The Arts

A library of an academic institution depends on the courses that the college of fers. While the Central Library mostly offers books on science and engineering, arts colleges have to cover a wider range of subjects. Arts college libraries are usually more eclectic than others. Stella Maris College, for example, has two libraries, one for undergraduates and another for postgraduate students. Both libraries boast a large collection of novels of various genres and reference books on subjects, including philosophy, international affairs and religion. Stella Maris College has subscribed to online research databases such as EBSCO and QUESTIA, which are open to students and faculty.Students here have the unique privilege of using the resources of the library even after they graduate. Shri Sankarilal Sundaribai Shasun Jain College for Woman also has two libraries – one for the humanities and another for the sciences. But the process of digitization has been slow. Librarian Mathanki Devi says that although they subscribed to the online resources portal INFLIBNET last year, students do not have access to the database yet.

Every college library caters to both the immediate scholarly needs of students and tries to keep them updated on current affairs. The latter becomes more prominent in a media college. Indian Institute of Media and Communication (IIMC), Delhi, subscribes to over 100 periodicals and 40 leading newspapers. The library maintains a large collection of books covering areas as niche as advertising, public relations, journalism and communication research, and as broad as economics and politics.

Do you believe that the Studio that created the Oscar- winning film' s special effects has declared itself bankrupt?

LIFE OF PI ANIMATORS FAIL TO STAY AFLOAT

The Hyderabad-based Rhythm and Hues (R&H), an American visual effects film that created most of those special effects for Life of Pi, Was not yet done celebrating the film's Oscar Success when the mood in its office turned glum. The film had declared itself bankrupt in the US. Almost I00 digital artists in Hyderabad had worked on the movie along with colleagues in Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur and Kaohsiung, Taiwn. The Oscar for 'best visual effects' was one of four Life of Pi won. On II February, R&H filed for Chapter II bankruptcy protection in the US and laid off 250 workers, many of whom turned up at a protest outside Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the venue of the Oscar ceremony-where too its employees had felt cheated when a winning team member's acceptance speech was cut short just as he started talking about the studio's internal troubles.

Animators in India appear to have had no clue that their company was in such poor shape. “When the film was released, all R&H employees had a special screening to watch our baby on the big screen,” says Venkat R, a former animator with R&H. He quit last month. “I left as soon as some was sacked in the US,” He says. Animators who still work for the company have put up green squares on their Facebook profiles as a form of protest. During film shoots, such a green screen patch is used as stand-in for special effects that are to beaded later. “We left [our fb profiles] blank because our future is blank,” says an upset staffer who does not want to be identified.

An R&H spokesperson had released this statement from its headquarters in EI Segundo, California: 'Tonight Feb II, R&H His filing for Chapter II reorganization in the US bankruptcy Court…. Meanwhile, all our offices will remain open, our clients are aware of the process; we have obtained commitments for financing to complete projects….. I believe we are going to come out of this stronger, more efficient, and prolific.’

MY ENGINEERING AT ANURAG HAS ALSO CHANGED MY LIFE-VIEW!

During my tenth standard, like all others of my age, I was in a dilemma. I was uncertain about what I really wanted to do in life. I sought the help of my teachers and my family and I succeeded in identifying the career that I would like to pursue. They took my personal aptitude and abilities into account and made me aware that I can make a skilled software engineer. Then I joined the science stream in my Intermediate.

But I was still not out of the woods. After Intermediate, apprehension set in. Would I be able to secure a seat in a college of repute? This question loomed large before me. When I finally landed a seat in Anurag Engineering College, I was overjoyed. I knew I was lucky to be here.

I had reasons for this happiness. I was an introvert and it was clear to me that I had to change. But that was easier said than done. I needed a support system to really motivate me to speak out, to bring out my hidden skills. I had heard from my friends and seniors that Anurag brings out the best from its students. And there I found myself at the threshold of a new life- a bold and confident me. With a quiet determination, I entered the college. The inter-linking of different fields of engineering and my stream specifically is not just about studies and technology. It is about involvement, management, interaction and evolvement. Inter-departmental fests, inter-university tech fests and cultural festivals held at the Aushapur campus have helped me become versatile.

As I am personally involved both in the tech fest of my department and the cultural programmes, I have realized the importance of such meets at this level of education. They not only help us grow emotionally and mentally, but also help us in enhancing our communication, managerial and organizational skills. These are the practical skills that we need to be equipped with once we are part of the corporate world. While I am content with the course I am eager to know more, to explore more.

My love for engineering at Anurag Engineering College has also changed the way I look at life.

I would like to share why I have chosen to pursue MBA.

Unlike some of my classmates I am not the kind to be complacent and confine myself to what I have achieved. I have always wanted something more out of my life. I know it is easy to settle down in a job that one can get in the campus placements. But why follow the flock. Why not try and be ahead of the others. This restlessness edged me on to do MBA. MBA is a highly professional post-graduation course. By doing this I can gain specialized knowledge about business management and related decision making. And going by the present economic trends it will be very helpful for me to grow in my career.

I have chosen MBA to play a managerial role in future handling various functions related to the choice of fields - marketing, sales, operations, f i n a n c e e t c .

The choice of MBA specialization depends upon one's skills, attributes and personality.

MBA is very helpful for those who are very ambitious and hope to hold senior, responsible positions, like CTO, CFO, CEO etc. Once I gain enough experience, I can see myself in a good position.

Tejaswi,

My Idea of MBAMBA IS FOR THOSE W H O D R E A M TO SCALE HIGH!

YOUR WAIT FOR NOKIA LUMIA 720 IS OVER

The Nokia Lumia 720 is a Windows 8 phone manufactured by Nokia. It was a much anticipated phone by gadget lovers, when it was announced at the Mobile World Congress, earlier this year. The phone has been defined as the “game changer” by many critics, in the Lumia series after the second generation of the series failed to live up to its expectations. The name Lumia is derived from the partitive plural form of the word Lumi, which means snow in Finnish language. It features a wide variety of back shells made of polycarbonate. For the first time Nokia has added a 64 GB expansion slot for microSD into one of its uni-body polycarbonate builds.

Its 4.3 inch display has a WVGA resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and an aspect ratio of 15:9. Screen protection is provided by Corning Gorilla Glass 2. It uses a 2000 mAh battery just as the larger Lumia 920 and as a result has a longer battery life. It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and has a 6.7 MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss lens and a pretty decent 1.3 MP front camera.

This phone can also be recharged wirelessly using an optional accessory cover and can also be recharged conventionally. The Windows 8 operating system provides a wide variety of applications and games from Microsoft's Xbox. It is an ideal phone for students because of its advanced features and pretty user friendly interface, although it also comes with a price tag of Rs.18,482 , It is still believed to be an amalgam of Lumia's strong elements into one phone made with budget in mind.So all in all, this phone would be wonderful for the students who are looking for something other than the same old Android and IOS, and it has received thumbs up from many gadget experts who have claimed “while that it may be different from the 920 but still Nokia have managed to transfer the same DNA on the 720”.

mWhat does the above line remind you of? Little things…like a ripple across an emerald pond, like a dew drop settled on a crimson rose, like the caresses of the sweet, light breeze, the drizzles of rain on your palm. The warmth of love and the saccharine moments of friendship.

These are the little things in our lives which we don't care to notice. WE are involved with all sorts of other things, like updating our Facebook accounts, Twitter and Whatsapp profiles, finding out reviews of the latest movies, gossip about the hot new celebrities or maybe in the dirty business of getting to be the most popular person at college or school. But small things, which are supposed to be of maximum consideration, are actually of least concern for us!!!

Things like values, virtues, care, love, truth, which had been engraved in some faint vicinity of our minds during the innocent age of childhood, are like incredibly ancient forgotten memories which everyone wishes to remember but no one wants to, because it isn't old school and not cool to do so.

An immensely important part of our lives are family and friends. In this digital age of virtualization and growing technology, it's not very hard to keep in touch with our far-stationed relatives and extended family members. But in this process we are drifting away from our parents. The warmth that parents bring to their children's lives is irreplaceable. If you understand the importance of having parents and you are grateful to them, then it is the best way of showing them gratitude for their selfless and endless love.

SMALL THINGS OF GREAT WORTH

They demand nothing from you. All you can give them is respect and love, for this is the only way to thank them for everything. How many times do we let them know what they mean to us and how they have helped us become a better person than who we were yesterday? Forget the texting, calling, and e-mailing for a little while and partake in each other's lives as you partake in the evening meal.

Friends are an inseparable part of one's heart…friendship can begin with anyone, anytime. But, how many of us give the rightful importance to the friends who deserve it? Friendship is symbolized by us accepting our friends for who they are and vice versa. The thick waves of loving emotions which flow between friends are the emblem of connection between their individual beings. A real friend is recognized if he/she holds your hand and assures you and will not leave you stranded even if that is what the crowd is doing. Give your friend your entire love and establish the most important aspect between friends….TRUTH.

Another important thing in life is Truth. It probably is the most underrated for us these days. To realize the power of truth is like finding a way out of dark, choking, smothering tunnel of lies that suffocate and kill the element of truth within us. Many things that we say are meaningless and just empty. Don't let your heart become hollow and void, fill it with the warmth of trust and mean what you say and say only what you mean.

Do the words “INDIVIDUALITY” and “IDENTITY” holds any meaning for us? Or do we only follow the other so-called updated girls and guys, knowing deep within we don't really like it and it isn't like us? Is it really that you color your hair red just because cool Cathy decided to do so? There are many people who don't do this, but at the same time many who DO. Develop your own identity. Be who YOU are. When we all know that we are unique in our own individual, diverse and beautiful ways, then why don't we concentrate towards developing ourselves rather than getting body pierces and highlights?

GOD…remembers him. Whenever we feel we are shunned and no one will listen, remember that God is always ready to hear. Actually, to converse with Him is perhaps the easiest way to get our feelings out anywhere and anytime! He doesn't only listen but also responds. The only difference is that he responds in ways that we don't understand.

So let's just all be grateful for what we have and live life in such a way that you would never have to say “ if only”, “Alas”…..ever in life.

A Hyderabadi has emerged the savior for ailing smart-phone maker BlackBerry, which has fallen on bad times despite pioneering mobile email access. Prem Watsa, an alumnus of Hyderabad Public School at Begumpet, is chairman and CEO of Fairfax Financial Holdings, which inked a provisional deal to acquire the handset maker. Fairfax is also BlackBerry's biggest shareholder. HPS alumni are excited with the news.

Many of them recall Mr. Watsa to be a person who maintained a low-profile. Yashwant Ramamurthy, an architect and student of the 1968 batch, said Mr. Watsa was his senior by couple of years. Mr. Ramamurthy recalls, “He wasn't a topper and it is quite interesting to hear about his achievements. I am proud.” Mr. Watsa's father M.C. Watsa served as vice-principal and later as principal of HPS.

They all moved to Canada. One of his sisters married a Hyderabadi but later she also moved to Canada. Faiz Khan, a member of the Board of Governors of HPS said, “We are happy. In fact, we are looking forward to his visit to Hyderabad later in December for the 90th year celebrations of the school”.
