    Foreword

    I seek refuge with Allāh from the cursed Satan.

    In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the

    Most Merciful.

    There is neither power nor strength except

    through Allāh, the Exalted, the Most Great.

    Sufficient for us is Allāh, and He is the best

    Wakīl (Disposer of affairs)

    This book is the work of Serigne Modou

    Abdoulaye Ndar. It was realized under the

    auspices of his father Serigne Abdoulaye Fall

    Ndar, at the time the General Caliph of the Baye

    Fall.

    My endeavor was driven by one wish only: to

    work for Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall. It is my

    intention that all disciples will benefit from the

    teachings of this work. With this work, the wisdom

    of Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall can be passed on,

    as all his children passed away and the number of

    his disciples that he himself educated has

    decreased considerably.

    Over time, [the stories based on] “it is said” might

    alter the statements of Mame Sheikh Ibrahima Fall.

    That is why I share with the talibés (disciples) the

    results of my conversations with the older people

    who lived with him, so that everyone can benefit

    from it. I advise the disciples to trust these

    recommendations and follow them because each of

    his words is a jewel, especially for a Baye Fall.

    Sayings of the Truthful Murīd

    1. Serigne Ibrahima Thiam reports that Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said to them: “You lack

    common sense. If you had any, you would put all

    my statements in writing.”

    2. I, Serigne Modou Abdoulaye Fall, (I swear)

    by Allāh and by his Greatness to have heard from

    Serigne Modou Moukhtar Ndiaye Bambi Lat Dior

    that Mame Sheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “Of all the

    creatures of Allāh, Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba is the

    bravest.” Then he added: “If people dare compare

    anyone with Serigne Touba, it is because the day

    of the crossing of as-Sirāt1 is far away.”

    3. I went to see Serigne Baye Ndoye, the

    younger brother of Serigne Moussa Ndoye. He

    told me that he had heard Mame Sheikh Ibrahima

    Fall say: “Massamba Ndiaye Waqqi! When a child

    is still in its mother's womb, isn't that all its

    territory?” “Certainly Fall, it is its only territory,”

    replied the latter. Mame Sheikh continued: “When

    it comes to life on earth, its territory becomes

    infinitely larger, doesn’t it?” Serigne Massamba

    Ndiaye Waqqi agreed: “Certainly!” Mame Sheikh

    Ibrahima let him know: “Whoever compares us–

    me and Serigne Touba–with his person, let him

    know that his person is compared to us what the

    womb of the mother is compared to life on earth.”

    4. I went to see Mame Faty Sylla, the daughter

    of Serigne Maniaw Sylla. She was a wife of Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall. She told me that Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall had summoned her, together

    with Mame Sassy Mbodj Guelewar, another wife

    of him. He called a disciple to accompany them.

    Next, he said to them: “Go to Serigne Bamba's

    house. You are too proud and I want to preserve

    you from the fire of Hell. One of you is the

    daughter of a religious guide and the other is a

    princess.” After that, he gave them a piece of bread

    and instructed them: “Start eating here, just until

    the house of Serigne Bamba.” When they arrived

    at Serigne Touba’s house, the disciple informed

    him of the goal of their visit: “Mame Cheikh wants

    that his two wives will be preserved from the fire

    of Hell.” Serigne Touba answered: “Does Cheikh

    Ibra Fall doubt my words? I told him that all his

    disciples will be preserved from Hell.”

    5. I went to visit Mouhamadou Gningue

    Khombole. He told me that once he went to Cheikh

    Ibrahima Fall, who said to him: “Mor Gningue!”

    and he answered: “Fall!” Mame Cheikh continued:

    “From here until the end of time, where Serigne

    Touba will have a house, I will have a house next

    to him.”

    6. I went to Serigne Cheikh Tall’s house. He

    told me that Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “In the

    most difficult moments (the Day of Judgment),

    whoever calls me, I will answer him.”

    7. I met Serigne Baye Ndoye, the younger

    brother of Serigne Moussa Ndoye. He told me that

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “A world

    without Serigne Bamba, a world without me...

    That world will be grim. I advise you to follow the

    sons of Serigne Bamba at that time, because they

    hold the science to guide the whole of humanity.”

    8. I went to visit Serigne Cheikh Tall Galo. He

    told me that when they had gone to war2 on the

    order of Serigne Touba, the Germans sent a

    submarine that managed to pierce the hull of their

    ship. He said that on that day, the boat did not sink

    despite the damage caused by the submarine.

    When he told that to Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall,

    he said to him that Serigne Touba was in front of

    the ship and he behind it. That was the reason why

    the ship hadn’t sunk. They had watched over

    them.

    9. I went to see Serigne Ndiaga Diouf from

    Toubatoule. He told me that once on the night of

    Mawlid,3 Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall found them

    sleeping. He woke them up with his feet and said

    to them: “Get up and work for Serigne Bamba (by

    celebrating the holy night). You will sleep as you

    wish when you are in your graves.”

    10. I went to visit Serigne Salih Fall Tawa from

    Ndiassane. He revealed to me that his father had

    sent him to Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall to give

    him twelve sheep. When he arrived, Mame Cheikh

    had already departed to Guémb Fall. So he

    followed his footsteps, together with his herd.

    When he arrived, he found there a letter from

    Serigne Touba asking Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall

    for sheep. Mame Cheikh exclaimed: “One could

    say that the real owner knows about the arrival of

    his goods. And you Salih, give thanks to Allāh. It

    was your mother that I prepared (for the funeral)

    first, before fajr.4 I prayed for her soul in Paradise

    before dawn, without the approval of Serigne

    Bamba.”

    3 Mawlid is the celebration of the birthday of the Prophet (SAWS). 4 Fajr means dawn; the Fajr prayer is the prayer at dawn, before sunrise.

    11. I went to Cheikh Fall's house. He told me

    that Mame Cheikh said: “Whoever wants to obtain

    the blessing of Serigne Touba, should do like me.”

    12. Serigne Baye Ndoye reports that Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “I am the reference and

    the frontier of the way of Serigne Bamba. Whoever

    stops before he reaches me has failed, whoever

    goes beyond me is lost.”

    13. Serigne Baba Ngom told me that Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall had prepared ten storage

    huts of millet for Serigne Bamba. When they

    started to detach the grains, big black clouds

    started to cover the sky. Serigne Mafal Coumba

    Diomry went to look for Mame Cheikh to tell him

    that “...the millet will become wet and spoiled.” He

    (Mame Cheikh) got up and went to his house.

    After a while, he came back and the clouds had

    disappeared. He explained: “I talked to Mīkhā'īl,5

    the angel who is responsible for the rain. He

    answered me: ‘I received an Order.’ I went to see

    his Ordainer.” That is why the rain was canceled

    in all of Guémb Fall. Others came to tell him that it

    would start raining. He answered them: “You will

    go to Hell if that happens!” He knew that it would

    not start raining and that they, therefore, would

    not go to Hell.

    14. I went to meet Serigne Talla Kouni Fall. He

    told me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall had the

    habit of asking Serigne Touba for sāfara (healing

    potions). On such occasions, he would send him a

    teapot and 500 francs (a big sum of money at the

    time).

    15. Serigne Talla Kouni Fall also reported that

    one time, Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall had a

    pulmonary illness. He sent Serigne Mor Talla Fall

    to Serigne Touba. When he (Serigne Mor Talla)

    arrived, Serigne Touba asked him about the state

    of Mame Cheikh. Next, Serigne Touba wanted to

    prescribe a remedy but then interrupted that and

    asked Serigne Mor Talla to go visit him (Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall) on his behalf. When he

    (Serigne Mor Talla Fall) came back to Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall, he was announced (to

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall) and was asked to see

    him in his room. When he (Serigne Mor Talla Fall)

    was about to speak, Mame Cheikh, who was

    laying on the bed, exclaimed: “Verily, he is right!

    He gave him the remedy. He put it in his eyes.” As

    soon as he had looked him (Serigne Mor Talla Fall)

    in the eyes, his illness was gone.

    16. I went to see Serigne Fallou Ndiaye. He told

    me that when they were digging the foundations

    of the railway, Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said to

    them: “You, the disciples who responded to my

    appeal for that construction work for the mosque

    of Touba, [know that] Serigne Touba said:

    ‘Whoever sends his disciple there, at his return, he

    (his disciple) will become his master; whoever

    sends his slave there, at his return, he (his slave)

    will become his master; whoever sends his wife

    there, at her return, she (his wife) will become his

    husband.’ The railway is essential for the

    accomplishment of that construction work. That is

    why I recommend it. I could have ordained it to

    other creatures of Allāh and they would have done

    it. Because of its importance, I entrusted it to

    Serigne Abdoulaye Fall Ndar, who coordinates the

    600 people, and the white man named Charle.”

    It was Serigne Abdoulaye Fall and a white man

    whose first name was Moudi Tabour who started

    the work. It was at the time of the prayer of

    Takousane.6 Serigne Fallou Ndiaye testifies that he

    witnessed all that and that he can swear to it. This

    story is very rich in teachings and deserves to be

    studied to absorb its wisdom.

    17. I went to see Serigne Ibrahima Thiam. He

    told me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “If

    you had common sense, you would put all my

    statements in writing. If you had done that, an

    invaluable literary treasure would have resulted

    from it.”

    18. Sheikh Modou Fatma Fall told me that

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “Know that on

    the Day of Resurrection, I will retain the

    appearance under which you know me. The earth

    will not consume my body.”

    19. When I went to see Cheikh Fall in Keur

    Taguiriss, he told me that he had gone to Serigne

    Ibrahima Baye Dioume, who told him that Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “The one who refrains

    (from speaking ill of others), the one who is friends

    with Allāh, and the one who knows the Quran–

    their bodies will not be consumed by the earth.”

    Serigne Baye Dioume had remembered these

    words. Allāh willed that he departed on a trip to

    Cadior for a long time. When he came back, he

    discovered that one of his disciples had died, as he

    noticed his absence. When he learned about his

    passing away, he remembered the words of Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall because his disciple knew

    the Quran. He went to his grave, accompanied by

    Serigne Modou Aminta Fall. He took the earth

    away until he reached his corpse. It had stayed

    intact.

    20. Serigne Salih Gningue told me that he took

    care of the herd of Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall. He

    went to search for water for him and skinned the

    animals for him. He told that one day, he prepared

    the meat of an animal whose throat he had cut, and

    that he spat on the ground. Mame Cheikh had seen

    it, but said nothing. The next day, he (Mame

    Cheikh) called him and said to him: “Salih, sit

    down like a disciple.” Serigne Salih Gningue tells:

    “I sat down on my knees.” Next, he ordained him:

    “Sit down like a king.” He sat down more

    comfortably, with his legs crossed, and Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall spoke to him: “Salih!” and he

    answered: “Fall!” He explained: “Son! If you

    behave badly toward Allāh, He distances Himself

    from you. If you honor Him, He stays close to

    you.” Serigne Salih Gningue caught up with him

    and implored him: “I repent of that error, Fall.”

    Serigne Touba said in Nahju Qada'il Haj7 that a

    disciple must behave correctly in front of his

    sheikh. There are disciples who take their guides

    for just a comrade. They insult in his presence and

    talk about anything and everything with a loud

    voice. All those practices are disrespectful.

    21. I spoke with Serigne Salih Gningue. He told

    me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall always did

    his ablutions8 halfway9 when he was going to

    respond to a summoning from Serigne Touba.

    22. Serigne Salih Gningue reported that one

    day, he was sitting with Cheikh Ibrahima Fall in

    his house in Ndiarème (Diourbel). He (Mame

    Cheikh) asked somebody to hand over a bowl to

    him. The disciple answered: “This bowl is dirty.”

    To which Mame Cheikh replied: “You said it

    yourself. Perform the greater ablution (ritual

    washing of the whole body) because Allāh does

    not put His Light in a dirty body.”

    23. I went to see Mame Khady Sarr, a daughter

    of Cheikh Ibrahima Sarr. She said to me: “Serigne

    Touba would send his clothes over to Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall to purify (wash) them. We

    did the laundry together. We soaked the clothes in

    water. He drank from that water and put a part of

    it in bottles to use it as a healing potion. Then he

    would add soap to the remainder of the water.”

    24. I visited Serigne Oumar Lo, son of Serigne

    Modou Lo. He was the chief of the village of

    Ndiarème Keur Cheikh. He was a sheikh.10 He told

    me that his father went to Mame Cheikh Ibrahima

    Fall, who asked him: “Modou Lo, hand me over

    the lamp.” Serigne Modou grabbed the lamp11 and

    the lamp made a noise. Mame Cheikh Ibrahima

    Fall exclaimed: “Modou Lo, the lamp broke!” He

    (Modou Lo) checked it and said to Mame Cheikh

    that it was not broken. He put the lamp on the floor

    and lit it. A moment later, it exploded into a

    thousand pieces. Mame Sheikh Ibrahima

    explained: “Modou Lo! Allāh made the lamp

    explode because I said it was broken. He wants to

    honor my word.”

    25. I went to see Serigne Diamé Diokhané from

    Ndoulo. He told me that one day he was with

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima, who said to him:

    “Ndiamé!” He answered: “Fall!” Mame Cheikh

    told him: “Until we leave this world, I and Serigne

    Bamba will be the only references of the Truth.”

    26. I visited Serigne Cheikh Tall Galo. He told

    me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall had called

    him to his house in Thiès to give him a massage.

    “He was laying on his matrass on the floor of his

    room. The lamps had gone out. We were in the

    back bedroom. I massaged him. That day, there

    was nothing in the house.”12 Cheikh Ibrahima Fall

    said to him: “Talla, the life of this world is nothing

    but an illusion.”

    27. I went to see Serigne Cheikh Tall Galo. He

    told me: “One time, Serigne Bassirou Mbacke

    (Cheikh Muhammad Bashir Mbacke) visited

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall in Ndiarème

    (Diourbel). It was in the month of Ramadan.13 He

    arrived during the day.14 Mame Cheikh Ibrahima

    Fall sent him water to wash his hands with15 and a

    meal, which he served with his own hands.

    Serigne Bassirou ate the meal.”

    28. I went to Serigne Modou Mbenda Fall (a son

    of Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall). He told me that he

    had heard Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall say: “When

    I pass away, may my grave be deeper than that of

    Serigne Bamba.”

    29. I went to Serigne Dame Fall “Mbacké Baol”.

    He told me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said:

    “A son of Serigne Bamba can assign a task to

    anybody, but nobody can assign a task to him.

    Whoever goes out to search for water for a son of

    Serigne Bamba so he (the son) can do his

    ablutions,16 even if he returns to him (the son) after

    his prayer, he will be blessed for eternity.”

    30. I went to see Serigne Moussa Ndiaye. He

    told me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said to

    them one day: “Alhamdulillāh (Praise be to Allāh).

    Yesterday night I went working near the Lord–you

    were behind me. It is thanks to your contributions

    and your invocations between my house and that

    of Serigne Bamba that you arrived at this level. I

    told that to Serigne Bamba. He propelled me to a

    level where no act of adoration or devotion can

    bring a man.”

    31. I went to see Serigne Salih Gningue. He told

    me that Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “Certainly,

    Serigne Bamba has given me gifts that I saw with

    my own eyes. Next, I went to him and he opened

    my eyes to the point that I can no longer see except

    him.”

    32. I went to Serigne Abdoulaye Fall Ndar in his

    house in Khabane. He told me: “When Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall received his spiritual

    education from Serigne Touba, one day he wanted

    to change the rags he was wearing. He departed,

    in search of new clothes. He walked a few meters

    and saw a baobab tree of which all the leaves had

    been picked.17 He looked at it and was surprised:

    ‘This baobab will not be more believing than I am.

    It stayed where it was because it knows that Allāh

    will cover it with new leaves.’ He gave up his

    search for new clothes.”

    33. Serigne Cheikh Tall Galo told me that after

    Serigne Touba had passed away, Serigne

    Mouhamadou Moustapha Mbacke18 came to visit

    him (Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall) in Ndiarème

    (Diourbel). That day, Mame Cheikh had a

    pulmonary illness (which kept him in bed at

    times). He inhaled Lā ilāha illā-llāh (There is no

    deity but Allāh) three times. Shortly after, he called

    his disciple: “Cheikh Talla!” who answered with:

    “Fall!” He gave him all the riches he had on him

    and ordained him: “Bring this to Serigne

    Mouhamadou Moustapha Mbacke. Say to him that

    I did not glorify Allāh in front of him. I was

    breathing it. Tell him that I apologize to him. Tell

    him that while I was invoking Allāh in front of him

    as if I was fearful, I was only breathing.”

    34. I went to see Mouhamadou Ndiaye Diome.

    He told me that he had witnessed a similar scene.

    He had accompanied Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall

    to Serigne Touba’s house. There were other

    disciples with them. They were all sitting next to

    Serigne Bamba. “At a certain moment, Serigne

    Touba got up and said to Mame Cheikh Ibrahima

    Fall: ‘Wait for me here while I go pray.’ Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall seemed surprised and said

    Lā ilāha illā-llāh three times. Then he said:

    ‘Mouhamadou Ndiaye!’ I answered with: ‘Fall!’

    He ordained: ‘Go to the house, ask Ibrahima Kane

    to give you all the riches that are in it, and bring

    them to me here.’”

    Serigne Mouhamadou Ndiaye Diome told me that

    he ran and brought him what he had asked for.

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall handed over

    everything to Serigne Bamba. He placed it all in

    front of him while apologizing himself to him: “I

    implore your forgiveness. I did not glorify Allāh in

    front of you, I was just breathing with the

    formula.”

    35. Serigne Modou Samb Kadjil told me that

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “The approval of

    nature, but their benefits are different. Whoever

    [wants] the approval of a “Toubab,” has to salute

    him [respectfully]. He can sanction the one who

    does not. Whoever [wants] the approval of a

    Murīd, has to honor him. He can sanction the one

    who does not. Whoever has the approval of a

    sheikh who has the approval of Allāh, obtains the

    goal of all his desires. The approval or curse of a

    sheikh who does not have the approval of Allāh

    doesn't have any value. Whoever cannot bless you,

    cannot curse you.”

    36. I went to Serigne Mor Safi Thiam. He told

    me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “The one

    who feels fear because of a threat, has no faith in

    Allāh, and neither does the one who makes

    threats.”

    37. Cheikh Ibrahima Thiam told me that one

    day, he was sitting under a window in Ndiarème

    (Diourbel). At that moment, he heard Mame

    Cheikh Ibrahima Fall say: “You lack common

    sense. If you had any, you would put all my

    statements in writing.”

    38. I went to Serigne Salih Gningue Ndar. He

    told me that Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall had

    called him. When he arrived, he (Mame Cheikh)

    told him: “Salih! I went to Tanifoul to visit the

    grave of Serigne Modou Diop Anta Gueye. I

    passed Malick Niang, the father of Serigne Salih

    Niang. He complained (that I had passed him

    without visiting him) and so I returned and went

    to see him. It was there that I accomplished the

    prayer of Isha.”21 Serigne Salih Gningue told me

    that Mame Cheikh had called him: “Guenda,” and

    that he had answered: “Fall!” He (Mame Cheikh)

    continued: “When I accomplished the Takbīr,22

    Malick rose in his grave in an esoteric way.”

    39. I heard from elder family members that

    Mame Cheikh Ibrahima Fall said: “Whoever

    succeeds me, inherits everything from me. If he is

    ignorant, I will give him knowledge; if he is poor,

    I will give him wealth.”
