PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Summer time is here – FINALLY!!!

We are pleased to welcome our 2014 summer staff to the Chamber. Drop in to the office in Lakefield and say hi to Katie Stringham, and Lea McQuitty. We are pleased to be partnering with the Buckhorn District Tourist Association to provide visitor information at their new facility beside the LCBO in Buckhorn. Welcome Centre Co-op student, Sarah Fee, will primarily be at this location.

The Chamber kicked off the summer season with our Annual Golf Tournament on May 29th. This year the event was held at Six Foot Bay. The course was in terrific shape – no sign of the harsh winter in evidence. This year‟s main event sponsor was Nexicom, with Paul Downs and his son Matt on hand to represent their company and enjoy a game of golf. It was a great day of fun for all the serious and not so serious golfers!

Congratulations to the winning foursome of Ryan Freeburn, Matt McIntyre, Graham Florence and Mike Kingdon. Second place went to Team Randall (Shane, Tracey, Dillon and Kent). The third place team consisted of John

Penny, Gunnar Rogstad, Mike Van de Bor and Doug Fairbairn. Congratulations to all. Thanks also to Kent (Team Randall), and Bryan Kingdon for all their hard work as the “Golf Tournament Committee” and for a job well done.

And speaking of our dedicated volunteers, the East Kawartha Chamber hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on May 1 at the Bridgenorth Community Hall. Our guest speaker was Olympian Cody Sorensen, brakeman for Canada‟s top four-man bobsleigh team.

Cody‟s hopes for Gold at Socchi were dashed when Canada 3 flipped over during second of four runs for the Men's 4-Man Bobsleigh event. Nevertheless, the team‟s „smart‟ training approach to preparing for the Olympics, his personal experiences at the Games and the aftermath of returning home without the coveted medal are the basis for the inspiring story which this young man shared with Chamber volunteers. The delicious breakfast was catered by The Old Bridge Inn (Chef Evan Podd) in Young‟s Point. Sue Swanky (Swanky Events) set the mood for the event with her usual flair for design and great sense of occasion.

But never fear, more great events are upcoming… At our next Business After Hours, on Wednesday June 18, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., we will be launching our new branding initiative with a cruise aboard Stoney Lake Boat Cruises. Board at the dock at Mount Julian. Space is

limited, so please contact the Chamber office for details, or register online.

And don‟t forget to read your Chamber Newflashes. These quick digital updates are full of interesting and timely information. If you have an event to share or other news that you think our members should hear, please send it along.

Have a wonderful summer, everyone,

Heather

Members and guests gathered at the Bridgenorth Community Centre on May 1st for a special breakfast, with the purpose of honouring our VIVs (Very Important Volunteers). The month of April marked National Volunteer Month, and the Chamber joined organizations across the country in showing much appreciation for all the time and energy our volunteers contribute to our team year-long. Chef Evan Podd of the Old Bridge Inn served a delicious gourmet breakfast.

Highlighting the merits of team building, RBC Canadian Winter Olympian Cody Sorensen was our guest speaker. As a member of the four-man bobsleigh team, Sorensen had plenty of insight into the qualities, input and rewards of working together. Sorensen stressed the importance of skill development in every aspect of one‟s life, which can optimize what and how we contribute to a team. This, along with genuine understanding and empathy, is essential to healthy team building.

Sorensen also shared a couple of his secrets to success – lessons that can be learned by anyone,

regardless of whether or not they‟ve raced in a bobsled at top speed. First – vision is your seed. Clarify the team‟s vision and let it grow into fruition. Second, identify controllable factors and capitalize on them. There are some things you just can‟t change. For things that you can – take advantage and make the most of your team‟s assets and opportunities.

The Chamber is extremely

fortunate to have a stellar team of volunteers supporting our mission, programs and events. Thank you again for your hard work!

8TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

Thank you to the golfers and dinner guests who joined us for the East Kawartha Chamber‟s 8th Annual Golf Tournament at Six Foot Bay Resort in Buckhorn. A wonderful, sunny day made it a great afternoon on the links. Many thanks to Nexicom for their continued sponsorship of this event! The Hall Family and all of their staff at Six Foot Bay provided a warm welcome and worked very hard to make the day special! Chef Michael‟s wraps at lunch provided sustenance for the task ahead. And the spread at dinner was amazing - goat cheese and caramelized onion canapés, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, filet mignon sewers, cheesecake squares and so much more! Be sure to consider Six Foot Bay for your next dinner out.

All of the Hole in One prizes, sponsored by Tony Davidson of RBC Dominion Securities, eluded golfers again this year. However, Matt Downs of Nexicom was just inches from winning the $10,000 hole-in-one prize!

We had some fabulous golfers this year with two foursomes tied for first and then only one point apart another three foursomes were tied. See the photos page for the top foursomes. Our winning team will enjoy a prize package including VIP seats at six Peterborough Musicfest concerts this summer as well as Molson branded items and coupons from Pizza Hut & Subway! Our second place team received dinner for four from the Irwin Inn and

Horlings Garden Centre & Landscaping gift certificates. Third place received a Chamber gift certificate for the Chamber member of their choosing, Lakeview Bowl passes and Subway coupons.

Lucky draw winners chose from over $1800 in prizes that were generously donated by regional businesses, both members and non-members. A special thanks to RotoSpa for the one week hot tub rental for this draw.

A very special thank you must go out to Bryan Kingdon, ISL Insurance, and Kent Randall, EcoVue Consulting Services for their assistance on the planning committee and Cindy Windover, MASS Environmental Services for emceeing the presentations.

The Chambers Group Insurance Plan is overseen by the Chamber Insurance Corporation of Canada (CICC). Their board consists of two representatives from each participating region of the country; One member being a permanent Chamber staff person, and the other being a volunteer member. As a board they ensure the Plan is being operated to the best interests of the

Chamber members across Canada. Their mission is to provide a competitively priced comprehensive group insurance benefit plan available to all participating Chamber members and their employees.

Since the inception of the Plan in 1970 the day to day operations have been managed by Johnston Group Inc., located in Winnipeg. They specialize in the administration of group plans for large corporations and organizations and all that this service entails. They have been named as one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Private Companies for seven consecutive years.

As of April 1, 2013, there was $289,254.999.00 of in force annual premium and 30,197 insured firms providing coverage to 129,462

employees and their family members. For the 12 month period preceding the above date, 357 Life claims were paid, in addition to 1,230 Disability claims, 1,699,213 Extended Health claims and 380,829 Dental claims were paid.

Health and dental claims are settled within 24 - 48 hours of their receipt by the Chambers Plan Claim Departments, and employees can have their claim payments deposited directly into their personal bank accounts if they so wish.

The Management at Johnston Group Inc., meet with their Agents twice per year to review all aspects of the Plan and to request advice and suggestions on how to improve the Chamber Plan's service and coverage offerings. To my knowledge no other group benefit market in Canada is similarly supportive and committed to their clients and Agents.

The Board of Directors also meet

twice per year to ensure the Plan remains financially sound and competitive, and to review the many new options, benefits and enhancements that are introduced every year.

If you wish to know more about the many benefits of the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan, please call Brian, The Life Insurance Guy at 705.741.1400. You can also view buychambers.ca and chambersgroupplan.com
