culinary creations are loved and savoured.

At PSA, our joy comes when we do well –

as a team – and have fun at the same time.

Play makes hard work easier, and helps

us envision a future where we all progress

together. It delights us too when we share

the fruits of our labour by giving back to

the community. After all, food always tastes

better when enjoyed with friends.

A Spice of Wisdom

PSA International’s Board of Directors plays a crucial role in guiding the organisation’s business affairs and strategic planning. The Board focuses on achieving sustainable growth and financial performance.

Every quarter, the Board meets to determine the business direction and assess investment opportunities. The Board also approves budgets and audited accounts annually. Decisions are made based on a majority voting system. In the event of a tie, the Chairman will have the deciding vote.

The following Committees support the Board:

• EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (EXCO) The EXCO develops and reviews long-term

strategies for the PSA Group. It is responsible for the approval of major acquisitions and divestments, loans, capital expenditures, provision of guarantees, investment policies, customer contracts, tenders and purchase contracts.

• AUDIT COMMITTEE (AC) The AC identifies and mitigates significant risk

areas through regular reviews of the effectiveness of control procedures. It assesses the reliability of management reporting, compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and reviews the statutory accounts.

• LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & COMPENSATION COMMITTEE (LDCC)

The LDCC oversees leadership development, talent management and remuneration. It ensures that the PSA Group has in place appropriate programs and consistent policies for grooming leaders, developing global talent and preparing potential successors for key leadership positions. It also reviews the performance and approves the remuneration of PSA senior management.

• SUPERVISORY COMMITTEES (SCs) The SCs are responsible for aligning management

resources for the better management of PSA’s global portfolio of terminals. There are five SCs: Southeast Asia SC, Northeast Asia SC, Middle East South Asia SC, Europe, Mediterranean & The Americas SC and Marine Services SC. Each SC plans and reviews growth strategies and approves major capital expenditures, customer contracts, tenders and purchase contracts for PSA entities under its business purview.

PSA Group upholds its reputation and demonstrates its utmost business integrity as a leading port operator by ensuring all commercial practices adhere to the PSA Code of Business Ethics & Conduct.

2017 proved to be a fine year, with a diverse assortment of programs and initiatives that were distinctively flavoured and infused with meaning, to bring out the very best in people development across the organisation.

Carrying the essence of our corporate culture are the Fish! and Fish+ principles, which focus on creating an environment or  “smell of our place” that encourages teamwork, camaraderie, excellent customer service, positivity, self-discipline, trust and support. Employees are encouraged to express their appreciation to one another by the giving of Fish nominations. The Fishapp mobile application is one such conduit, with over 120,000 Fish messages sent in 2017 alone.

Among PSA’s signature programs are Fish Booster and Fish Blazer. Both designed and delivered in-house, Fish Booster focuses on enabling happiness and engagement at the workplace through positive psychology and is targeted at all employees. Fish Blazer on the other hand builds on Fish! and Fish+ and aims to impart best practices to leaders so as to enable them to strive for extraordinary productivity and performance  for themselves and their teams. Both programs made headway across several more business units in the PSA family in 2017.

As a measure of organisational wellness, the biennial Employee Opinion Poll (EOP) was conducted last year, attracting high levels of participation from the geographically and demographically diverse workforce.  Employee satisfaction rates improved across many business units, with our global employee satisfaction level clocking in above 80%, which is much higher than industry norms. High scores were also achieved in the internal “perception of leadership” and the “perception of PSA as a Global Champion”, topping the previous EOP even against the industry backdrop of continuous change and disruption.

To address future preparedness, Organisation Development 2020 was launched, involving multi-level and cross-functional project teams, in an effort to review and refresh our working environments and approach to culture change. The teams brought diverse perspectives and experiences to the table, collaborating for ideas on new initiatives and projects aimed at building a more agile, connected and empowered organisation. Changes are expected to be gradually introduced in the years to come.

Developing People – Our Recipe for Success

Quality and variety are key to whetting the appetite for learning, enabling us to reach our fullest potential. To this end, PSA sustained its efforts in multi-pronged learning and development for various segments of talent.

The global corporate university continued to deliver signature in-house programs such GM Fast Track and POMP (Port Operations and Management Program), which enable knowledge-sharing across core functions and provide selected leaders and managers with holistic perspectives. Learning investment was also stepped up to send senior leaders to best-in-class advanced management programs at leading business schools.

Coaching and mentoring relationships were enabled through the pairing of young talent with mentors in the senior leadership team. Further enhancing self and team effectiveness were the in-house RED360° / TEAM RED360° for gathering feedback, and the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument® for diagnosing thinking styles and communication preferences.

Cross-cultural effectiveness and global savvy were also strengthened through more international job assignments for individuals with suitable expertise to support business expansion. In addition, investment continued to be made in the STRIDE (Short-TeRm International Development Experience) programs for selected staff that have the relevant experience, to go for short term stints.

In 2017, PSA also  intensified cooperation with various universities, polytechnics and other institutes of higher learning on the exchange of knowledge and expertise and to harness latest technological capabilities for organisational needs.

One of the most important ingredients for people success at PSA is its focus on building outstanding labour-management partnerships. This X-factor has been key in fostering win-win partnerships in many of the Group’s projects around the world. In recognition of these efforts, PSA garnered a triple win at the Singapore’s National Trades Union Congress May Day Awards. The three winners were Global Head of HR & Corporate Affairs Caroline Lim, as well as veteran unionists Low Chow Wah from the Singapore Port Workers Union and Gillian Gan Yoke Lan from the Port Officers’ Union. Each had contributed significantly to the labour-management synergy that is fundamental to PSA’s continued long term success.

When all is said and done, just like how the measure of the goodness of chocolate is in the tasting, 2017 was indeed a year to be savoured.

PSA firmly believes we have a duty as a leading global player to contribute to the communities that we operate in. This drives us to reach out to touch people’s lives and protect the environment wherever we go.

In Singapore, we awarded the Howe Yoon Chong PSA scholarship to 22 students from low-income families to help them pursue an education. Since 2008, the bond-free sponsorship has made an impact on 168 individuals by covering tuition and other compulsory fees at the Institute of Technical Education, local polytechnics and universities.

Into its third year, PSA Health@Home (H@H) continued to enjoy strong support, with more than 360 volunteers participating in this initiative with our healthcare partners – St Luke’s ElderCare, HCA Hospice Care (HCA), National University Health System (NUHS) and Lions Befrienders (LB). Volunteers were engaged in a series of regular activities to contribute 5,000 volunteer hours in 2017.

More than 800 participants attended the annual PSA Charity Fair fundraiser. All proceeds raised were matched dollar-for-dollar by PSA Singapore and subsequently donated to our H@H partners.

Other fundraising efforts included a cycling activity for NUHS’ Needy Patient Fund, and our annual golf event for customers and partners, which benefitted LB’s socially-isolated elderly. Staff also continued to volunteer at The Haven, a Salvation Army shelter for children and youths from disadvantaged families.

In recognition of these efforts, PSA Singapore was named the “Most Active Corporate (Partner)” by HCA and received the Donor Award (Silver) from LB. Furthermore, it was conferred the Community Chest SHARE Platinum Award for achieving a high employee participation rate in the SHARE initiative, through which PSA Singapore’s staff contribute monthly to the Community Chest’s beneficiaries.

In other parts of Asia, PSA lent support to the local community through various ways. Thailand’s Eastern Sea Laem Chabang Terminal donated medical equipment to Ao-Udom Hospital and repaired Bueng Bua temple. New Priok Container Terminal One in Indonesia organised a blood donation drive with the Indonesian Red Cross in support of local hospitals.

China’s Beibu Gulf-PSA International Container Terminal donated a stage to Xi Niujiao Zheng Ling Jiao Primary School in Qinzhou. The terminal’s staff visited Long Men Gang Old Folks’ Home to spend time with and give presents to the elderly. Likewise, employees of

Shaping a Better World

Guangzhou Container Terminal volunteered at Huangpu Old Folks’ Home.

Korea’s Pusan Newport International Terminal and PSA Hyundai Pusan New-Port Terminal  funded the cancer treatment for three young patients under the Korean Association for Children with Leukemia and Cancer.

In India, Chennai International Terminals and PSA SICAL contributed towards the Rotary Club of Chennai for a pond restoration project, to alleviate water scarcity in the village of Thappalampuliyur. PSA SICAL also brightened the lives of children at Tuticorin’s Annai Karunai Illam orphanage by sponsoring their school fees and organising a Children’s Day celebration. Bharat Kolkata Container Terminals also sponsored school uniforms, bedding and stationery items to Kamakhya Balak Ashram orphanage in Kolkata.

Emulating the same spirit of giving, PSA’s operations in Europe and the Mediterranean stepped up efforts to improve the lives of those in need.

Employees at PSA terminals in Belgium initiated numerous projects to help local underprivileged children and youth. They repainted and refurbished a youth care centre and a temporary shelter in Antwerp. In addition, they volunteered at Kamiano, a welfare organisation that provides meals, showers and clothing for the homeless. During a regional charity drive, staff organised several initiatives to raise funds and donated part of their monthly pay to charitable causes.

Both terminals in Italy focused their community efforts on children and the disabled. PSA Voltri-Pra financially supported the refurbishment of playhouses at Scuola per l’Infanzia, a local kindergarten, while PSA Venice donated to Nazareth House, an association for children from disadvantaged backgrounds; and Un Mondo Diverso, an organisation that supports people with disabilities.

PSA Sines in Portugal was a major sponsor of the Sines race leg of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, an international event that saw over 60 tall ships and small ships sail competitively across the Atlantic, with stopovers at seven countries. It also lent support to Associação Caboverdeana, an institution for young immigrants from Portuguese-speaking countries, by installing facilities for training and learning purposes.

In Turkey, Mersin International Port (MIP) partnered Mersin Tennis Sailing and Swimming Club to groom a group of 12 talented orphans to pursue their passion for tennis. Called “The Tennis Champion from Mersin”,

the project covers the children’s training and equipment needs. Continuing its collaboration with Mersin University Conservatory, MIP also provided education for musically inclined children of its staff through MIP Kids’ Music Academy.

Over in the Americas, Argentina’s Exolgan Container Terminal built and equipped a carpentry workshop to meet the training needs of the locals. With a focus on youth development, the terminal also supported numerous activities – including education, sports and cultural activities – for about 1,000 young people. Eight university students were awarded scholarships to pursue business-related studies.

Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce (SPIA) in Colombia continued to focus its efforts towards local community projects aimed at improving living conditions, education levels and general welfare. These ranged from contributing non-perishable food and school books to the Puerto Aguadulce Foundation, which distributed the items to needy families and supporting entrepreneurship programs. SPIA also partnered Vive Bailando Foundation, an academy with the purpose of transforming the lives of youths through dance and movement.

PSA Panama continued to help Stella Sierra School upgrade its facilities. It also donated school supplies to students from low-income families and contributed daily necessities to a children’s home. Furthermore, the terminal organised a charity drive for Nutre Hogar, an organisation that nurses malnourished children back to health. PSA staff also raised funds for cancer patients and their families through the Susie Thayer Family Walk and FANLYC Relay for Life.

Beyond giving back to communities, PSA also makes it a priority to do our part for the environment. We kept up our commitment to the annual Go Green collaboration with other leading port operators. Staff from PSA ports worldwide worked together to address environmental issues and raise awareness of the cause. Some cleaned up public areas and planted mangroves, while others organised recycling projects and exhibitions for environmental awareness. Their efforts culminated in the planting of nearly 1,000 seedlings as well as the collection of 15 tonnes of used items and 12 tonnes of trash for recycling.

Taking the lead to further integrate green causes with our port operations, PSA Singapore created an Environmental Sustainability Plan to guide the terminal’s efforts until 2030. The plan details three main areas for sustainability – carbon reduction, environmental protection and cultivating a green port culture.

In Belgium, PSA Antwerp, MSC PSA European Terminal and Antwerp Terminal Services demonstrated their environmental commitment by collaborating on the construction of three large underground tanks for rainwater storage. By using rainwater, the initiative will be able to conserve up to three million litres of potable water required for cleaning and maintenance annually. The tanks are expected to be completed by the first half of 2018.

Sustainable practices are also in place at PSA Marine. With the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the use of cleaner fuel alternatives, two of its newly ordered harbour tugs will run on liquefied natural gas.

As we transform and expand our operations, PSA will continue to lend a hand to the community and care for the environment.
