Flavors are solid blackand red berry and plum with dried fruit taste and atoasted wood aroma. You will find savory herbs anddried mushrooms as well as subtle smoke wrappedin a soft tannic finish. 2015 PetitManou (Medoc)Raise your hand (or glass) ifyou’ve heard Merlot is boring,or have had some leaving youunimpressed. Both of mine arenow straight up. Want yourfaith restored? Try this one.Produced on a single 12-hectare vineyard in the north-ern Medoc, Petit Manou is adelicious example of how concentrated, deep, yetfocused Merlot can be. Key to this is the extreme at-tention to detail the estate takes to produce quality(not quantity) fruit. Their small size helps, as thesevines are vigorously pruned, and two green har-vests limit yields to just three bunches per vine. Thebunches are turned often throughout the season toeven out ripeness. All this is done manually, as wellas final harvesting, three separate sortings to selectonly perfect berries, and even pressing, as the es-tate uses a handmill to very softly extract the prod-uct of their hard labor. After 12 months in used oak,the wine is not fined nor filtered. 2015 is an excep-tional vintage, and this just shines. A deep rubycolor, with an evocative raspberry-vanilla-incensearoma, this wine brings fine, supple tannins andgreat depth of flavor. Raspberry, cedar, stewedplum, and bay leaf show on a medium-bodiedpalate. Very versatile, I could see it perfectly with abeef stew, a herba-ceous roastedchicken, or pork tenderloin. Italian Whites2016 Masseria LiVeli ‘Primonero’(Salento)We have been carrying this tradi-tional bottling from Li Veli for years,largely because it represents a beau-tiful take on one of Italy’s nativegrape varietals. Negroamaro is themain grape here (85%), softenednicely with Primitivo (15%). The winehas recently undergone a radicallabel update, which prompted me to take another look atit. I’m glad I did – apparently I’ve been stuck in a little bit ofrut in my Italian red buying habits. This bottle is a perfectlypriced, delicious Italian wine that showcases what thesouthern provinces of Italy are capable of producing withtheir local grapes. Negroamaro creates a medium bod-ied, darkly colored wine that is densely flavored andstronger than you might expect. I choose the word‘strong’ to describe it not because the wine is heavy orrich; it is neither. Rather it is strongly flavored; it comesright at you, forces itself on your palate, compels you tonotice it, but it does not overwhelm you with weight, rich-ness, and fullness of body. The flavors evoke dark plum,earthy, even stony associations, but with no hint whatso-ever of over-ripeness or raisin flavors. The addition ofPrimitivo softens this wine in just the perfect way, by deny-ing the Negroamaro of its roughness and tendency to-ward angular edginess. I found this to be lovely andversatile with a broad array of Italian cuisine, but it will re-ally feel most at home with meals that contain an earthynote, either with redmeat, mushrooms, orboth. #105958

Quinta do PortalColheita Tinto 2012(Douro Valley)I love to travel, and enjoy learningabout places I intend to visit. Portugalis definitely high on my list, and oneof my favorite ways to advance myknowledge is to taste the local wines,which, in the case of Portugal, mostfamously is the Douro Valley. Thewine that captured my imagination isQuinta do Portal Colheita Tinto 2012. The wine is com-posed of fresh and fruity Touriga Roriz (60%), floralTouriga Nacional (25%), and the delicate Touriga Francagrape (15%). It is aged for 9 months in French oak, and atmy first taste, I noticed all of the familiar flavors of a bigred wine, such as blackberries, dark cherries, cassis, andsome toasty spice notes from the oak. The surprise camefairly quickly, when the dark flavors were joined by lighterred and blue fruit notes that provided a sense of bright-ness, followed by smooth but persistent tannins that leadto a long finish. 2016 Dry CreekVineyards DryChenin Blanc(Clarksburg, CA)I realize the slightest scent of fall inthe air sends most people runningfor red wine, but I can’t jump shipquite so easily. This time of year Ilook for a white wine that can transi-tion me from my summer of Sauvi-gnon Blancs into something a little sturdier before I givemyself over to reds for the winter. Chenin Blanc is an idealvarietal for such a task. Aromatically the fruit is round andlush with notes of apricot, melon, and lemon oil. On thepalate, the weight of the wine spreads over your tongueand stays there, leaving behind flavors of juicy apple,lemon, and a slight hit of ginger. The label clearly statesthis is a dry wine (Chenin Blanc, the main white grape ofthe Vouvray region in France’s Loire Valley, is often madein a semi-sweet style) and it most certainly is.
