WhyAttend the Achievement Awards?
By: Jeff Calhoun, FX Luminaire
Why do I attend the CLCA SFBA Chapter Awards Banquet every year? Is it because of the
excitement of finding out who has built or maintained the best landscape in the Bay Area?
Is it because of the comraderie shared by Contractors, Associates, and Affiliate Members
from cocktail hour to the final award presentation? Is it because it is an opportunity to get
dressed up and help celebrate what is best about our industry? The answer to these
questions is: YES! For all of these reasons and many, many more I hope that you have the
ability to attend the best Chapter event of the year. Also, the Achievement Awards is
another great opportunity to showcase our wonderful Partners for Success, for which we
are grateful for the time and resources they give to our Chapter. See you at the Awards!

Every month when I sit down to write my president’s message, I
am reminded of the essays I was required to write in summer
school. I’d face that blank page and dread the looming due date.
As I sit today, facing a blank screen, I am reminded of those essays,
but I am inspired by a greater purpose. While the essays were
required to earn a grade to get out of summer school, my
president’s messages to you are part of a commitment I voluntarily
made to serve an organization which I believe has great merit.
Giving back is part of my life's purpose and so is taking time to get
away to refresh myself and renew my perspectives. I will be
revitalizing myself down in Oxnard in mid-July at the CLCA
summer family extravaganza as well as in Maui in November. I
urge you to find a way for yourself to give back to our industry.
After all, CLCA and our membership are only as good as the sum
total of the fine qualities of each member!
Life offers so much to us all. During summer months, this is
especially true. Perhaps you have children around, or family
coming to visit, as I currently do. For all of us still in the middle of
our careers, we are especially busy, so finding time to refresh
ourselves to sharpen the sword is vital. Travel is a great way to
renew the spirit. I have been fortunate to see a few areas of our
world, including working in and traveling throughout Asia. It was
during that time, while living in China, that I discovered the great
author Steven Covey. I spent countless hours traveling by train,
boat and car across that country, and I must have read his book,
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People ten times. As he humorously
writes in his follow up book, First Things First, “The main thing is
to keep the main thing the main thing.” Of course he wants us to
keep our priorities straight and offers a method to maintain focus.
Mr. Covey urges us to take a weekend to get away and focus on
that big picture. Take time to cultivate one’s dreams and get them
down on paper. Life is sacred, so give this annual two-day retreat
over to dreaming. I have been looking for a weekend or two to get
away up to the mountains where I can clearly see “life's main
thing” after sorting through the vast details of a landscapers life.
Travel allows me to find enlightenment. In simple terms,
enlightenment is defined as new perspectives on old situations. I
can return home from a weekend away or better yet, a month
(dreaming) and be so clear about the changes I need to make. Mr.
Covey’s book showed me the importance of taking time to look at
my life as a living, breathing plan. He explained the idea of
threading a golden string from the big picture of my life all the way
down to the details of the day. If passions are in alignment, then
while the economic seas of life become rough and stormy, as they
have been, it is much easier to navigate through the challenging
and chaotic forces with your eye on the horizon.
Covey explains how to thread the golden string into our daily
lives by scheduling time to cultivate ourselves. Once a quarter, take
half a day to review the sacred annual weekend spent planning and
dreaming. “Have I been on course over the past three months?
Where have I slipped and why? What is new and exciting and how
can I weave it into my plan?” Next, spend two hours on a Sunday,
once a month, to review the previous month and to look forward to
the coming month. Ask the same questions but try to be more
detailed. Once a week, spend about 30 minutes going over the
previous week and planning for the next. Finally, spend a few
critical minutes almost every night looking at your day gone by
and create the next day’s schedule. This daily habit threads the few
minutes of the day together like pearls and connects them with the
golden string to your life’s purpose. Steven Covey’s advice to
schedule this personal time away from the focus of daily work can
truly help one to reassess, adjust course and maintain inspiration.
CLCA is not only a wonderful place to network and meet
friends, but also a center for education, mentoring and activism. I
encourage you to look deeper into what the CLCA has to offer and
what you can give back to your industry. This industry is changing
rapidly, and CLCA presents a framework and venue to examine
and discuss those changes so one can adjust course as needed.
Oxnard in July and Maui in November allows CLCAmembers a
way to blend so many of life’s important priorities together into
one time period: family, work, fun, planning, retreat, and
refreshment. Think of it as summer school but this time it is your
choice. We’re going to have a lot of fun and work a little too. And
please remember, “the main thing is to keep the main thing the
main thing” this summer and this life.

A night of education and great food was enjoyed by forty eight CLCAmembers
and their guests on May 19, at the Kingfish Restaurant in San Mateo. The private
basement room provided an excellent setting for members to network and catch
up with close friends.
President James Walker opened the evening with a warm welcome to
everyone. He then introduced Dave Tanner and Kevin Burns who gave us an
update on the latest developments in the fight against the underground
economy. Alice Domine from the Women’s Auxiliary then coordinated the
passing of the first annual and perpetual trophy of 2010 Horseshoe Champions,
Jim Everett and Kevin Burns. Jim Everett took the honor of keeping the trophy
for the first half of the year but Kevin was eager to accept the trophy for safe
keeping and well deserved bragging rights. They both welcomed all challengers
and dared anyone to try to take the trophy away from them at the upcoming
annual CLCA Chapter Picnic on September 11, at Coyote Point
in San Mateo. Any takers?
After an incredibly delicious gourmet meal, Christine
Hawkins and Warren Gorowitz from Ewing Irrigation took
center stage. They gave a great power point presentation
educating members on the latest legislative water requirements
affecting our industry and how Smart Controllers are
becoming a key tool and business opportunity for our
members. Christine discussed the many features and options
of Smart Controllers currently on the market. Warren then
pointed out that a Smart Controller will do
nothing to help a “dumb irrigation system.”
He explained that it is imperative to have an
efficient irrigation system in place before
installing a Smart Controller in order to
achieve the best measureable results.
To close a very delightful evening, Life
Member Zach Coney took the top raffle
prize sponsored by the Women’s Auxiliary
that benefited the College Enrichment Fund.
Don’t forget to attend the upcoming Chapter
Picnic in September, and let’s crown a new
horseshoe champion team!

Another changing of the guard in the
Women’s Auxiliary! Thank you Charlene
Ott for serving as our President in April,
May and June. Your support is always
appreciated. Summer made its official start
on June 21, but the nice weather finally
appeared much earlier than that. I’m
enjoying the warm weather after the cool
spring.
One of the goals of the Women’s
Auxiliary is to promote education and
scholarship. We have a raffle at each
dinner meeting, benefiting our College
Enrichment Program. I appreciate
everyone’s continued support of the
Women’s Auxiliary’s fundraising activities.
We haven’t given out any money from our
College Enrichment fund for some time.
At the Awards Banquet, I had the honor of
presenting a $2,000 check to Dan Svenson
from Foothill College for the Horticulture
Department’s Entry Garden Project. I have
already received a thank you note from
Dan and I quote:
“…we hope to make the entry garden to our
facility a beautiful and well-executed statement
of what good landscape construction is all
about. This will help not only with the
visibility of our program, but also the visibility
of green industry professionals. Thank you to
everyone in the Auxiliary for their support and
dedication to both projects like this as well as
providing scholarships for our students.”
The Women’s Auxiliary is always pleased
to contribute towards the education of
future landscape professionals.
The May dinner meeting raffle
generated $100 for College Enrichment.
Thank you everyone who bought tickets.
Our raffle winners were:
•Francisco Quezadaz of Skyline
Landscapes won a garden hose, donated
by CLCA
•Tom Noonan of Ewing Irrigation also
won a garden hose, donated by
CLCA…and
•Zach Coney of Coney Landscaping won

Thank you Sam Whitney for a wonderful
evening of memories. Congratulations to
all of the award winners! Thank you
everyone who purchased a ticket for the
Women’s Auxiliary annual raffle,
benefiting LEAF (Landscape Educational
Advancement Foundation). We raised
$1,220 for scholarships for future Green
Industry members. Thank you Cindy

The Future caught up to the Past while
being in the Present at this year’s
annual Awards Banquet on June 4th at the
Decathlon Club in Santa Clara. What? Come
again? It was one of those “you had to be
there” things to understand. And luckily for
about 150 people, they were!
The Awards program took a step back in
time to the old ways to celebrate this year’s
winners and gaze ahead. OK, simply put,
the theme this year of Past, Present and
Future was wonderfully highlighted and
toasted. In a nod to the “way it used to be”,
as was a commonly heard request from
some of the old-timers, the awards
committee worked hard to offer up a blast
from the past, while honoring this year’s
recipients of the judges’ decisions. It was a
dress up affair and the crowd responded in
aces. For an industry whose daily dress is
blue jeans and sweaty work shirts, the
opportunity to pull on some fancy looking
duds and dazzling dresses is always a sight
to be seen!
A fantastic new venue, The Decathlon
Club, was just the place to host this decked
out group. Beautiful in its tropical splendor,
with waterfalls galore, it was easy to
envision we were all hanging out in the
tropics kickin’ back! The spacious openness,
with room to roam, offered the perfect
atmosphere to soak in the wonderful old
“photo boards” representing our glorious
Past-- over 50 years of pictures showing
some of those old timers in their playful
youth. For those folks who might not have
been fully aware of just how far back this
group goes, they were able to sneak a
glimpse and gather a sip of the grand
heritage the CLCA-SFBA has to offer.
The “winners” were numerous and
hopefully a full accounting of their names
and prizes are somewhere else in this
publication, but as anyone who was Present
this fine evening can attest, everyone in
attendance was a winner, just to be in such
fine company. As anyone who has ever
entered the competition knows, the true
prize is not the nice plaque you receive and
the recognition of your peers, which is of
course, always a reward in itself, rather it is
the warmth and friendship you gain just by
competing, just by being an active part of
this incredible organization. No other
association takes the time and effort that
CLCA does to put on this event, year after
year, in the old fashioned manner of
sending those judges to actually see the
entries, to feel them with their own hands.
This is not a competition by photo entry, no
siree…those judges spend several days,

from sun-up to sun-down, driving to every
site and getting dirty, checking out those
valve installations and drainage systems, to
name just a few.
We were especially lucky this year to
have some of the most outstanding,
knowledgeable judges this industry has to
offer. Roger Fiske, author of the California
Landscape Standards Manual, Past
President of this chapter 42 years ago, and
State President in 1986, honored us with his
time and his knowledge to judge the
entries. Along with Charles Nunley, one of
the most dedicated members in the whole
state over the past 40 years, and Rick
Myers, also one of our Past Presidents and
multiple award winner in his own right
from his many years in business around
here. We had one of the sharpest, toughest
crews this chapter has seen in a while.
Thank you, gentlemen for your time and
energies on our behalf, and “Thank You” to
Barry Cohen for digging these guys out and
rounding them up for us.
Lucky too, we were, to have such an
outstanding Master of Ceremonies, Barry
Elder from Ewing Irrigation Products. Barry
brought the confidence and experience of
his many years of devotion to this industry
to the podium and added the touch of class
to top off the evening’s events. Thanks,
Barry!
A killer sound system and musical
selections by committee member Mike
Hertzer was truly appreciated. A nostalgic
“slide show” with photo’s from many years
of members participation was resurrected
for the full enjoyment of all those Present.
The Past was fully honored and
remembered by all those whose lives have
been touched by this wild and crazy group!
With members of our local Student Club
from Foothill College in attendance, the
Future had a front row seat on our Past!
The tables and environs were fabulously
decorated by Jill Hertzer and Cindy
Singletary, the incredible desert cake was
personally selected by Mary Cohen,
instrumental in securing our wonderful
new party center, which will have us back
for this years’ Holiday Party also.
Newcomer Dinah Zuckerman, from Delta
Bluegrass, spent countless hours assembling
the Power Point presentation, and even a
small technical glitch couldn’t put a damper
on the celebration. Thanks go to Girvin and
Lesley Peters for handling the reservations
and plaques, to Dale and Toni von Dohren
for an amazing job of producing the killer
logo “Brunfelsia” and the Invitations and to
Richard Singletary and Jim Everett for their
“behind the scenes” contributions.
A special “Thank You” goes out to the
often times over-looked crew of drivers and
navigators for those grueling long days of
judging; Mike Ruscoe, Chris McNairy, Mike
McPherson, Larry Edington and Craig
Stenehjem. One of this year’s quality
touches was having a full card of Sponsors
to show their support and hand out their
awards. To Jeff Calhoun of Hunter
Industries, this year’s Partner’s Chairman,
an incredible job of
lining up those
sponsors is due
very special
Thanks!
Last, but not
least, a hearty and
heart felt gesture
of appreciation
goes to Glenn
Hansen for his
non-stop
contributions of all
things technical
that made sure this event became a reality.
From a re-working of the entry forms and
web site access to them, to the pain-staking
work of processing all the paperwork and
routing of the judging, along with Mike
Hertzer and many others, Glenn was
always there to do whatever it took to help
out.
It was an honor to be the “Chair” of this
magnificent crew of volunteers, willing to
give countless hours of their time and
energy toward the goal of presenting our
38th Annual Achievement Awards
Competition and Banquet, for the sole
purpose of keeping alive this really cool,
time honored tradition of ours which is so
important to the on-going health and
vitality of this special group. I look forward
to making next year an equally fine time…if
you missed this year, be sure to join us next
time and see what the excitement is about.

Dear Members. The following Letter to the Editor is not in its entirety a direct
response to Barry Cohen's letter in last month's Bay Breeze but rather offers a
different opinion for the consideration of our members. Please note that Mr.
Hayes has made a few points which respond directly to Mr. Cohen's letter. No
letter submitted to the Bay Breeze represents any official position of the
editorial staff or the CLCA-SFBA Board of Directors. Please feel free to email
any letter to the editor you wish to publish to Christine Hawkins, our Bay
Breeze Liason. Thank you. James Walker
As a member of the CLCA and a member of the Underground Economy
Task Force Committee (we are a task force with STATE, a committee in
SFBA), I have volunteered about 10 hours a month for this committee.
As far as the money goes, what money are you speaking of?
Technically, we have not spent any of our money, unless they count our
phone meetings. I have requested the exact amount from our state
office, but as of this writing I have not received an answer to my
questions.
The cities, counties, state and federal governments are losing money
from the taxes lost to the $140 Billion Underground Economy. It
continues to grow and we all lose on the taxes that should be collected
from this illegal commerce. People not caring, yes that is true too, but
it's what the people and government don't know that is hurting all of
us. We need this revenue to make California whole again. That's why
we need to get the message out to everyone, and our committee is
working on just that. We are finding more ways to get the message out
in a very cost effective way. The UETF has created a 3 minute
presentation template intended to be used on a local, grass-roots level,
so that our members can meet their City and County leaders and
deliver this important message.
I have also talked to David Fogt, Chief of Enforcement, from the
Contractors State License Board about using my house for a sting
operation. A week before we were going to start I had a heart attack, so
we have postponed it. I have a list of about 30 suspected underground
contractors and 60% of them are landscapers. I also talked to David Fogt

about a landscaper in Cupertino, California,
accused of killing his customer and injuring
her husband over payments for work not
done. This really got me started on the
Underground Economy as I have friends,
family, and customers in the
Saratoga/Cupertino area. In fact, after I
told David Fogt about the story, he now
uses it in his slide show presentation for the
CSLB.
Our vendors should help us as well. In
our local Plumbing Industry, there are only
a very few supply houses that will not sell
to you unless you have a state license and a
photo ID. I wish our vendors would do
that. I was so disappointed when I attended
a homeowner irrigation class put on by the
Santa Clara Valley Water District and to
have a vendor stand at the podium and tell
everyone there, if you buy from us, we will
give you the same pricing as our
contractors. People who knew me looked
over at me... all I said was, “I don't know
why I can't make any money in this
business.” It got a laugh, but not from me.
Being that it's the Memorial Day
weekend and watching the old war movies,
I'm reminded about the bravery, courage
and honor of our fallen service men and
women. They didn’t give up when the
going got tough because they knew what
was “right” and that it is for the good of
our great country. What if they gave up
and said we’re not getting the bang for our
buck. Where would we be today as a
country?
And as I thought about this I was
looking at our state CLCAwebsite. I read
our Vision and Mission Statement. Very
interesting what it says. Then, I clicked on
our history and WOW, we started in 1937
with our chapter, 30 years before Mr. Cohen
graduated from Cal-Poly in 1967. We
formed an association to combat the “cut
throat”, illegal operators. The second thing
our forefathers wanted was education. They
wanted legal, professional, C-27 landscape
contractors. So 74 years ago, the CLCA
started with two main objectives: one to
combat illegal operators and two,
education. I think we should continue in
the fight against the Underground
Economy and continue with education. I
think with the different types of media we
have today we can educate ourselves, our
customers, and our government. But a
committee can't do it alone. We need every
licensed contractor in the state to stand up
and be heard... Unless you are comfortable
with your income and you are not worried
about those who are cheating our state and
our industry.
Let’s stand together and make our
founding forefathers proud! Let’s all show
up at city meetings and hand out
brochures, DVDs, and memory sticks with
a handshake and a smile. Let’s show all
people what they are missing. We need to
get off our butts and the coat tails of our
founding forefathers and make a place for
all of us on the CLCA history page.

Every year we call upon our generous
suppliers and manufacturers to help
support our chapter events. Their great
resources come in many forms: money and
materials, knowledge and attendance. One
of the greatest resources that our partners
and sponsors give (and often gets
overlooked) is time. Did you know that
some of our partners and sponsors that
attend chapter events come from areas as
far away as Fresno, Modesto, Brentwood,
Stockton and Sonoma? When that Thursday
night dinner meeting gets over at 9:30pm it
can be midnight by the time they get back
to their homes. That is a big commitment of
their time dedicated to supporting our
chapter. This month I want to thank our
generous Awards Sponsors, particularly
those suppliers who were able to offer their
time to attend our great awards banquet:

Niccoli of The Village Gardener, who
appeared on Oprah’s Behind the Scenes
Show! Featured as one of Procter and
Gamble’s Individuals Who Through Small
Changes Is Having Big Impact, Frank was
interviewed about sustainability and
landscape water management.
“The crew came and spent the day and
it was very exciting. I still can’t believe it
really happened,” said Frank. “We started
at 6 a.m. and they finished up about 7 p.m.
It was a long day, but an incredible
experience! A team of 11 people followed
me throughout the day and the result was
about 5 minutes of TV. It is amazing how
much work goes into something like that.”
Oprah’s Behind The Scenes is a one-

last year of shows was made.
