“LONG MAY SHE REIGN!”

It’s good to be able to celebrate a different sort of celebrity: someone whose “celebrity” status doesn’t come from the way their lifestyle – especially their lapses from grace – fills the pages of newspapers and magazines. Few “celebrities” have a record of a lifetime of service. Few “celebrities” remain firmly on stage well past the normal retirement age. Few “celebrities” turn out to be wholesome examples or role models. Few “celebrities” are driven solely by a sense of duty. This year, we have a chance to celebrate just such a person: someone who is not afraid to let her strong faith and absolute Christian values come across in her actions and in her public pronouncements.

Many may argue that it is only an accident of birth that placed the Queen in such a privileged position. We are all shaped by the “accidents of birth” that brought each of us into the world in a particular place, time and set of circumstances. What really counts is what we do with – or despite – those accidents of birth. It is easy to squander them in self-centred, even self-destructive behaviour. The hard challenge is to accept that, whatever we might want to do with our lives; our inheritance requires us to take up the burdens as well as the privileges. I do not know how many thousand public buildings the Queen has opened or named; but it is inspiring to realise that as she cuts the umpteenth ribbon, she is acutely conscious of the fact that for these people, in this place, this ceremony is the high point of their lives: it is their day, not her day.

In the prayers of the church, we pray for the Sovereign as the embodiment of the nation. At this time we should also thank God for blessing us with someone who has served her people well and faithfully. We should pray “Long may she reign!”

‘The Life of Christ’ 27 June – 2 July. A long but most rewarding day out, with ‘our’ Jesus James in the part of Jesus. See www.wintershall-estate.com and email [email protected] soon if you want to get tickets.

The Great Cycle Ride – Saturday 9 September. This can be another most rewarding day out! Why not keep the date free, get a sponsorship form from Amanda in June so that you can collect as many sponsors as possible, and then on the appointed day bicycle round as many churches as you can manage. You could take the family on a tour of some of the ancient churches near here! Although half the money raised will go to Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust (and the other half to the nominated church of your choice), you do not have to bicycle in Wiltshire (and Hampshire is much flatter!)

PS Many thanks to the Cross Keys for providing such a friendly and helpful venue for the reading of St Mark’s Gospel. About 40 of us crammed into the dining room to listen to a new translation of the first and shortest gospel, and it was a good evening!

John Dawson’s girlfriend, Marie, will do a parachute jump (weather permitting) at Netheravon on her birthday, 10th June, in aid of MS. If you would like to contribute or sponsor her please send your donations to Sungild on Hatchett Hill.

Preventing Spring Burglaries As the weather warms up many people take the opportunity to open the windows to let in the fresh air. However, it is not only the fresh air that can come into your house. Kennet has one of the lowest levels of dwelling burglaries in the country; but statistics show an increased number of offences of this type in the spring and summer. Please consider the following crime prevention tips.

Make sure your house looks as though it is occupied, even if you are away, use timers for radios and lights, ask neighbours to call in and shut/open curtains and remove post/milk/newspapers. Closed windows in very hot weather is another giveaway that no-one is home.

Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place. When you move into a new house change the locks.

If you have window locks, use them, keep the windows locked and put the key in a safe place, out of view nearby so you know where they are should you need it in an emergency. Don’t leave the key in the lock.

Door chains are good, but should only be used when you have a caller at your door, you should never leave the chain on when you are home in case someone need to gain entry to your house in an emergency.

4

Page 5: SAVERNAKE TEAM MINISTRY · Web viewAlthough half the money raised will go to Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust (and the other half to the nominated church of your choice), you do

Use your door viewer; never answer the door to anyone that hasn’t made a prior appointment with you. If in doubt, keep them out.

Never hang a spare key in the letterbox, and never hang your keys in the hall, in view of the letterbox, thieves will use anything to reach the keys, hook them through your letterbox and make off with your car or enter your home without you knowing.

Be a good neighbour, if you see anyone acting suspiciously, contact your local police. Why not join your Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Make sure you don’t leave anything out that could assist a burglar. A ladder or wheelie bin could assist them to climb and tools left out can be used to gain entry.

Make sure any hedging at the front of your property is not too high to allow a burglar to work away unnoticed. Make sure it is kept at a reasonable height to allow for natural surveillance from neighbours and passers by.

Side gates should have a strong lock and be a good first line of defence

NOTES FROM THE PARISH CHAIRMAN OF CHUTE FOREST

On 19th May the Annual Meeting of the Chute Forest Parish Council was held at the Village Hall. This was not a Parish Council Meeting, but an opportunity for any member of the Parish to attend and to hear from the Chairman how the previous year had progressed. There were also reports from representatives of the village activities and from our two Councillors, one from the District and one from the County.

My report contained our thanks to those unsung people who helped keep the village ticking over. I thanked Roly Williams who keeps the green mown throughout the year and to Doug Hirst who looks after the War Memorial. Also to Ken Yelf who is our Neighbourhood Watch representative. We referred to the main work that we do which is to review the planning applications. In the year we had sixteen planning applications ranging from a shed to a wall, right up to new houses. If there is a reason to think that in any way the applications would harm the village, we contact the neighbours directly affected and also have a site meeting of the Council and our views are sent back the Kennet.

We had a report from Dennis Compton, not the cricketer but the man from the County who is responsible for our roads. Dennis is retiring later in the year so this was our last opportunity to thank him for all his support over the years. He outlined the new role of the Parish Linksman. This man, a County employee, is the man who keeps the gullies and ditches cleared and open. You will see him and his Land Rover during the year.

I reported on the playing fields in my role as Chairman of the Committee and Pat Caddick reported on the Village Hall. The Council supports these activities both financially and by having members on their committees. Pat Caddick is our Financial Officer and she presented the accounts for the year.

We then heard from the Chute Charities chaired by Michael Sykes. This charity is solely for the benefit of the parishioners of the Chutes. If there is anybody in the village who, due to circumstances, have fallen on hard times, the Charity is there to help.

We heard from Lisa Jackson, who together with her committee have over the last couple of years put together the Village Design Statement. This is a legal requirement imposed by the Government on every parish and tries to identify those planning areas which cause the most concern in the village. Lisa informed us that our Statement is going before Kennet Council

shortly and under the law the planners will have to pay regard to the statement.

Finally, we heard from Robert Hall, our County Councillor and Peter Viesey, our District Councillor who outlined their work. I thanked all who came and thanked my fellow Councillors for their support and work throughout the year. I also reminded everybody how much we missed Sally Tweed who had to resign as Parish Clerk and wished her well in the future.

CHUTE GARDENING CLUB

The Gardening Club would like to say a thank you to all who made the plant sale such a success this year. The range and quality of plants was fantastic. The committee would also like to thank those who propagated seed and nurtured cuttings for us, and a big thank you to those who came on the wild, wet and windy morning to purchase plants.

The plant sale is the fund raising event for the Gardening Club and this year we raised over £800. This money will mean that the club can continue to attract quality speakers through the winter months and support the main events of the club calendar.

Plants left over at the end of the sale will be donated to the fete’s plant stall. So if you still want a tomato plant, feel like growing a melon or have a need for some fantastic parsley, there is still the opportunity to buy some in June.

Trip to Hestercome - Friday June 30th.The trip to Hestercome is booked, though not full, so there is still an opportunity to go if you would like to see an example of Gertrude Jekyll’s border planting, recently restored. The club is subsidising this and so it will only cost £20 per person. Please call John Wood 730 685 for more information.

Potato Competition Saturday 15th JulyFlower Show – Saturday 22nd JulyThe Potato competition will be judged the Saturday before the Flower Show; as usual the entries will be on display at the show.

The finale of the Flower Show will be the auction of flowers and produce, this year the proceeds from this will be donated to The Countess of Brecknock Hospice. There are two garden competitions:

The Best Garden with RosesMy Favourite Garden.

The Garden Roses competition will be judged this month. The date has not yet been fixed because the season is so peculiar this year, so we would love to hear from anyone who would like to enter their garden roses. My Favourite Garden will be judged next month prior to the show, again we would love to hear from anyone who would like to enter their garden.

VILLAGE HALL – ADVANCED NOTICE

Sunday 23rd July will be the annual Village Hall Music in the Park event – make a note in the diary now, full details in the July Chronicle!

BOURNE VALLEY MOVIES

The much anticipated “Brokeback Mountain”(15) is our next presentation. Directed by Ang Lee who won the Oscar and BAFTA for best director, the film also stars Jake Gyllenhall who also won awards for his acting. Everyone surely knows the background to this one, a story of forbidden and finally tragic love between two men working in Montana – very sensitively handled and wonderful scenery.

The showing will be at the Millennium Hall, Vernham Dean on Wednesday 14 June, starting at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm). Please note the change of date. Tickets £4.50 in advance Pat Caddick on 730730 or Vernham Dean post offices, where increased supplies have been provided. Otherwise £5 on the door (if available).

Our last film of the season, on 12 July, will be “These Foolish Things”(12A). Great cast includes Lauren Bacall, Angelica Huston and Terrence Stamp. More details next month but please put the date in your diary.

BOOKS - BOOKS - BOOKS - BOOKS

The bookstall is a long standing feature of the annual Chute Fete.

We have been blessed for many years by generous Chute Residents giving our stock of books a safe, dry home for 11 3/4 months each year.

BUT this year we know that we have to find them a NEW HOME immediately the fete closes.

If we cannot find a suitable storage area, we are left with only a few options -

Set up a village library, so the books can be stored, AND lent out to village readers during the rest of the year. But where could this be? How could it work?

Give some of the books to local interested parties (there is an excellent selection of gardening books, of cookery books, of children's books, historical books, etc, etc.). However, even this will only solve a small part of the problem.

Failing this, our only option is, very sadly, to consign the entire stock to the post-fete skip.

So, please, does anyone have a dry secure storage area where we can store the books until June 2007, or any other creative ideas?

If so please contact David Brown, 730236.

FETE - TOMBOLA PRIZES

The response last year to the request for tombola prizes was fantastic. Everyone was most generous.

We are appealing again for unwanted gifts, etc, as prizes. Bottles are always welcome! We are happy to collect in the area or they can be left in the porch at Wansdyke, Upper Chute, any time. The deadline for prizes is the Wednesday 14th June to allow time to get everything organised and ticketed before the Fete on the 17th.

CHUTE VILLAGE DESIGN STATEMENT

On Thursday 25th May the Chute Village Design Statement (VDS) was finally adopted by Kennet District Council as an emerging Supplementary Planning Document to the ‘Saved Kennet Local Plan’. The VDS gives detailed guidance on the distinct characteristics of each of the Chutes, and how this should influence the design of development.  Kennet must now consider this guidance when determining planning applications in the Chutes.

When Kennet District Council has followed various legal procedures the VDS will be fully adopted.  At this stage the final full colour version of the document will be printed and distributed widely.  At present an electronic version of the document is available to anyone who wants to use it.  It is soon to be posted on the Kennet District Council website www.kennet.gov.uk .  Despite the interim status of the document, it is a material consideration in the planning process and takes immediate effect.  If you would like an electronic copy of the VDS, or if you have any queries please contact either Tim Orlik on 730259 or Lisa Jackson on 730286. Lisa Jackson

CHUTE WEDNESDAY CLUB

On Wednesday, 17th May 2006 our outing took 44 of us in to the Cotswolds to visit Bourton-on-the-Water. This is one of the most charming and popular villages in the area. Tourists flock there constantly during the summer and indeed during the whole year, and like all popular tourist centres, Bourton-on-the-Water is also somewhat commercialised. The idyllic charm of this Cotswold village is unforgettable. As the name suggests the village has a river as its focal point, a traditional feature of many Cotswold villages

The slow, meandering, wide and shallow River Windrush, flows lazily through the village and is flanked by sizeable green verges and willow trees. Tourists tend to congregate around this area where they usually rest in one of the cafes, tea shops or pubs to admire the scene before them. The children enjoy themselves wading in the river’s shallow waters. The river is crossed by means of five low arched footbridges, which add a distinctive feature to the scene of this village. All these features, together with the warm grey-brown coloured stone of the typical Cotswold village creates the magic that never fails to fascinate visitors from all parts of the world

Among the many attractions is the Bourton Model village situated in the grounds of the ‘old New Inn’. It is a replica in local stone of this beautiful village. Built by local craftsmen in the 1930’s it was opened to the public on Coronation Day 1937 and remains one of the Cotswolds popular attractions. It is constructed in one-ninth scale and incorporates the River Windrush with its distinctive bridges, together with the beech, willow and chestnut trees all in miniature. It is complete with the Church of St Lawrence and the music of the actual choir. It even includes a model of the model village!

Our next outing is on Wednesday, June 21st when we cruise on the River Thames from Windsor to Maidenhead. This is always a very popular trip but there are a few seats still available. First come, first served - ring Ann on 730289.

Tempt your tastebuds with fresh local food at the new Farmer’s Market in HungerfordAsparagus, watercress, salads, wines and spring lamb will tempt the taste buds at Hungerford Farmers’ Market, when it opens for business on Sunday 28 May.

The car park behind the Three Swans Hotel in the High Street is the site of the market where on Bank Holiday Sunday from 10am – 2pm, shoppers will find at least 20 stalls selling delicious produce from Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire.

Market organiser Stuart Chandler is making sure there’s something for everyone including: organic salads and vegetables from Ogg Valley Organics near Marlborough; freshest local asparagus from High Close Farm Shop, Hungerford; spring lamb and mutton from Long Court Farm, Ecchinswell; herbs and plants from The Herb Garden in west Oxfordshire; wines from Fontwell Glebe, Salisbury, Cheddar cheese and butter from Somerset; and watercress from Mapledurwell, Hampshire.

“We’ve got a wide range of produce from across the Royal county of Berkshire, including pork from Wysipig, Arborfield; beef from Rooks Nest Farm, Barkham; award-winning goats cheese from Warfield; preserves from Reading; and meat from Christmas Farm, Enborne,” explains Stuart.

Hungerford Farmers’ Market is set to be a regular fixture on the fourth Sunday of the month at the Three Swans, with local strawberries and raspberries on the stalls for the market on Sunday 25 June, and seasonal introductions throughout the year.

Hungerford Farmers’ Market is the seventh market in Berkshire run by Thames Valley Farmers’ Market Co-operative, a co-operative limited company representing small producers and farmers selling direct to consumers at farmers' markets in the Thames Valley.
