MESSAGE FROM OUR MENAHEL
Dear Parents, Many great individuals have le hear elt mes-sages for their families and or students in their wills. My Rebbi, Harav Avrohom HaCohein Pam, zt”l did the same. He requested that if his talmidim would like to do something in his memory, he would prefer that they learn a few minutes a day from the sefer wri en by the Chofetz Chaim (Rav Yisroel Meir Hacohein Ka-gan , zt”l) called Ahavas Chessed. Naturally, as he was a person who personified chessed, he felt this sefer would help others be inspired to show kindness to others. Rav Pam used to give a schmooze on the Parsha every week. He told us that if we ever needed to take off from class for any personal reason, it should not be on Friday. The Gemara shiur we can make up on our own, the Friday lesson we cannot. It helped his talmidim develop into B’nei Torah in every sense of the word. Honesty, sensi vity, Kibud Av V’eim and the list goes on. Shmiras Halashon was on the top of his list. He would always speak about his mother the week of her yahrtzeit. I remember him telling the following story about her. She heard that people would take upon themselves one or two hour slots when they would be extra careful about avoid-ing Lashon Hara or rechilus. She couldn’t understand how anyone with Ahavas Yisroel would want to say a bad word about another person! Rav Pam’s son, Rav Dovid, shlita, a Rav and Rosh Kollel in Toronto, tells about an incident that took place when he was about ten years old. He was walking in the street and found a twenty-dollar bill! He quickly ran to his father to find out if he could keep it. His father said that he may keep the money found, according to halacha, explaining to him the reason be-hind it as well. Young Dovid was so elated that he started lis ng the various things he wanted to purchase with the money. His father said that it is important for him to realize that just as he may be excited for his find, someone else who has lost the item is very sad today. Today, said Rav Pam, we need to think about how the loser of the money must be feeling. Tomorrow we can discuss what you would like to pur-chase with the money.
I related this story to our faculty members when we met on our Professional Develop-ment Day before school started. I explained to our staff that this is the essence of our mission statement, teaching lessons of sensi vity, concepts that may not be found overtly in our textbooks but can be acquired by reading between the lines. It is common knowledge that a er wri ng the sefer Ahavas Chessed, hundreds of free loan socie es, shelters for the homeless, and Bikur Cholim socie es sprang into being. It is for this reason that Jews around the world are learn-ing selected topics from seforim wri en by the Chofetz Chaim and reci ng Tehillim in his memory today, Friday, the 24th day of Elul, the day of his yahrtzeit. Dirshu, an organiza on that has helped spread the teachings of the Chofetz Chaim, has pro-vided every YBH student a glimpse of what he has wri en in colorful books they sent containing stories and concepts organized by grade level. Our rebbeim and morohs have been sharing these lessons with the students and they were reinforced at today’s assembly. This summer, I had the opportunity to visit Radin, Lithuania where the Chofetz Chaim lived and built his yeshiva. The building has recently been purchased by Baalei Ba m and is in the process of being revitalized for future use. It was a great zechus to experience an emo onal dance with a group of Yidden a er hearing inspiring words of Torah in the name of this great tzaddik. May the students of YBH enjoy a year of spiritual growth, learning from great leaders of our past and pre-sent, giving nachas to their wonderful parents and teach-ers who con nue to work hard and daven for their success. Have a wonderful Shabbos and a כתיבה וחתימה טובה, Rabbi Berel Leiner, Menahel
