Ruben Acosta will examine these categories and how they help determine whether a building is eligible for the National Register.

A critical first step: determine the condition of your foundation. Are repairs necessary? What about insulation, moisture control, and proper design of mechanical rooms? Hear about that and more, including what “CAZ” is and why you need to know about it.

New State Tax Credits | Room 122 PRESENTER: Bob Puschendorf, Associate Director/ Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer at Nebraska State Historic Preservation OfficeJoin Bob Puschendorf, as he explains Nebraska’s new Historic Tax Credits that were established to incentivize property owners and developers to revitalize Nebraska’s historically significant buildings. Bob will describe how this program will encourage preservation through new uses for underutilized buildings, encourage private investment in historic buildings, downtowns, and neighborhoods as well as encourage heritage tourism in communities across Nebraska. This session will serve as a primer to the program and how it works for owners of businesses and other commercial properties.

Examine how the preservation movement is changing in rust belt cities and nationwide. 1:15-2:15 p.m. – Session 2 The City of Omaha’s New Approach to Enforcement of Property Violations | Room 101PRESENTER: Jay Davis, Assistant Planning Director at City of Omaha Planning Department

Abandoned, neglected and deteriorated homes have a huge impact on the property value and desirability of surrounding properties. The City of Omaha has implemented a new code enforcement process designed to address these problem properties more effectively. The City also hopes to adopt the International Existing Building Code, which can provide greater flexibility to those working to rehab and revive historic buildings.

Landscapes for Historic Properties | Room 102PRESENTER: Hans Klein-Hewett, Landscape Architect at RDG Planning & DesignHans Klein-Hewett will discuss the history of Midwestern residential landscapes. This session will explore the change in the American residential landscape, architecture’s impact on the garden and influences shaping today’s garden. He’ll also discuss how plant palettes have changed, with a focus on modern native gardens and how they relate and respond to historic residential architecture.

Historic Mortar and Brick Repointing | Room 103 PRESENTERS: Craig Moore, Sales/Project Manager, Dave Richard, Branch Manager and Tony Ash, Superintendent at Western Waterproofing CompanyVintage brick buildings eventually suffer mortar deterioration, to varying degrees. Securing the building envelope against weather is a top priority. Whether you are doing your own repairs or using the services of a contractor, being armed with basic technical infor-mation is critical. Choosing the wrong mortar “fix” can be more harmful than helpful. Also learn about distinguishing, selecting and locating the different types of bricks and mortar for your project.

Architectural Salvage – In the Unlikeliest of Places | Room 121PRESENTER: Jason Gilbreath, Owner and Founder of Reclaimed Enterprises, IncJason Gilbreath will discuss the potential for architectural salvage as a means to help solve community problems, and particularly the op-portunity for restorers to gain access to unique materials and develop their own deconstruction and salvage skills. Beyond architectural salvage, Jason will discuss the deeper opportunities to salvage scarce materials from blighted housing in Omaha.

Need for Skin in the Game—Using Real Estate Tools to Save Buildings | Room 122PRESENTER: Will O’Keefe, Real Estate Program Coordinator at Preservation Alliance of MinnesotaIndividuals and organizations are exploring ways to more actively use real estate tools to achieve positive preservation outcomes. There is a time and a place for direct advocacy, but at the end of the day preservation is, at its heart, a real estate issue. Across the country, organizations are finding ways to use new tools and strategies to strengthen preservation efforts.
