Local First Extravaganza Networking Mixers Bring Business Together on The Hill
HEIR Intimates provided a unique venue for our July Evening Networking Mixer! Food was provided by Bamboo Song of RHE and tasty cupcakes from Corner Bakery. The art on the walls was created by Palos Verdes Art Center Artist Jennifer Siegal. Pictured above are Allen Bond PVP Chamber Board member, Bank of America Home Loans; Zna Houston, Owner; and Eileen Hupp, President/CEO of PVPCC. Stop by HEIR Intimates on the 2nd level of the Promenade of the Peninsula to view their lovely collection of lingerie, lounge wear, accessories and gifts.
As part of the Chamber’s ongoing efforts to keep the local business community apprised of pertinent issues, representatives from Cal Water spoke at a recent breakfast mixer. The Chamber will continue to monitor this proposed project as it impacts both residents and businesses.
California Water Service Company (Cal Water) is proposing a two-part infrastructure project that will
greatly enhance water system reliability and fire protection for the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Currently, a single 55-year-old pipeline transports water to 90% of the hill, and a second older pipeline supports the remaining 10%. If either of these pipelines were to leak or break due to age, earthquake, or other catastrophe, residents of the peninsula would face water outages. The system is also vulnerable to extended power outages because electricity is required to pump water through these pipelines to various elevations.
The Palos Verdes Pipeline Project addresses these risks and is vitally important to increase water system reliability, improve fire-fighting capability, and reduce the risk of property loss or damage on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The first part of the project, the “Crenshaw/Ridge Supply Project,” will provide a second supply line to serve 90% of the peninsula. The second part of the project will replace the second critical pipeline, which is currently located so close to homes that it is extremely difficult to access for repairs and maintenance. The project will require community support and Public Utilities Commission approval. Construction is expected to begin in 2013 and finish in 2015. It will be broken into phases to minimize traffic impacts and inconvenience to area residents. For more information visit www.calwater.com/your_district/pv_pipeline/info.php.

The PVP Chamber of Commerce will present the 2nd Annual “Local First Extravaganza” on October 1st
at the Promenade on the Peninsula, 550 Deep Valley Drive, Rolling Hills Estates, from noon - 4:00pm. Residents are invited to enjoy free admission, live entertainment and family fun. This community showcase will feature dozens of exhibitors from the retail, service and nonprofit sectors, offering prizes, giveaways, discounts and information on local attractions. The first 200 guests will receive one of the popular “Local First” tote bags. For residents looking for local employment opportunities, a listing of job
opportunities will also be available. The event is part of the Chamber’s continuing campaign to encourage Peninsula residents to do business locally, and to illustrate that the resources, services and savings consumers are looking for are right here on the Peninsula. Doing business locally keeps sales tax revenue and jobs here in our community. Thank you to our event sponsors Promenade on the Peninsula and Classic Tents. For information on the Local First Extravaganza or the Chamber’s “Local First” campaign, call 310-377-8111 or e-mail [email protected].

Peninsula Locals Invited to Vie for“King / Queen of the Hill”To Raise Funds for Non-Profits
Peninsula residents and business representatives have a new opportunity to give back to the
community, by running for “King of the Hill” or “Queen of the Hill.” Through the campaign, which runs from September 15 until November 19, candidates raise funds for local non-profit organizations which sponsor them. The candidate raising the most funds will be declared “King of the Hill” or “Queen of the Hill” for one year, and will represent their sponsoring non-profit organization(s) and the Peninsula community at local events. The campaign is a unique and fun way for candidates (or a pair of candidates) and their sponsoring non-profit organizations to raise funds and to get exposure for the organizations’ programs and services. The PVP Chamber will
promote your events on our website, via social media, and at events. Candidates must be 21 or older, reside and/or work on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and be sponsored by one or more non-profit organizations who are members of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Eighty percent of each candidate’s net revenue will go to their sponsoring organization. Twenty percent will be retained by the Chamber to support their many community service programs, scholarships and events. For guidelines and applications, visit www.palosverdeschamber.com. Applications will be accepted until 5:00pm September 12. For more information, contact the Chamber at 310-377-8111 or [email protected].
