Old St. Mary’s, now in its 187th year of faith and service to God’s people, and served by the Holy Spirit Fathers since 1893, extends a warm welcome to all!

Today, in St. John’s Gospel, Jesus ties His instructions on the Eucharist to the Book of Exodus. Christ proclaims to the crowd that their ancestors received manna in the desert from God the Father, not Moses. Jesus professes in the Gospel that He is the “Bread of Life.” Those who accept His invitation and come to Him will never hunger or thirst, as they will be spiritually filled. In his Letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul instructs us that, through Christ, we will gain a fresh, spiritual way of thinking. As faithful stewards, we acknowledge Jesus’ true presence in the Eucharist as translated from the Greek meaning “thanksgiving.” We believe the Eucharist to be the true Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of Christ. We stand in awe and gratitude for this tremendous gift, which opens our hearts to holiness. Plan to attend a Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction service at your parish to experience Christ’s peace and joy.

Year of St. Joseph August Theme– “Joseph, Mirror of Patience”

Patience is willingness to suffer. A patient is one who suffers a malady not by choice whereas a patient man is one who suffers volitionally rather than relinquish the vocation given him. Joseph was patient because of his love. He was willing to suffer anything, even the loss of Our Lady and the Divine Child by being the first to die.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 AUGUST 1, 2021

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time A Reflection from the writings of Fr. Wayne Epperley, C.S.Sp.

Repeatedly we are told of the vast crowds who followed Christ simply because of the great signs and wonders that He was performing. After witnessing these miracles, the people sought to exalt Him, to make Him king. If He sought fame and glory for Himself, this would have provided a perfect opportunity.

However, Christ was interested in something else. He came to preach the truth and to lay down His life. In these next few weeks, we will read the Gospel of St. John and of what happens when Christ explains the significance of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. When He teaches about the Eucharist, some in the crowd walk away from Him and would follow Him o longer. People are fickle. Christ never wavered from the truth. When the people saw the miracles, they wanted Him to rule over them; when they heard the truth He spoke, they walked away. Christ came not to appease us but to save us. He loved them enough to let them go. Every day, the world over, the Mass is offered countless times and in varied places - from great Cathedrals to humble churches. In many places this awesome event is greeted with indifference. How true it is that we have changed so little from the time of the prophets. Many people are indifferent to Christ today just as they were when He shared our lives centuries ago. Today Christ advises His disciples to look beyond what nourishes for only a time to what lasts forever. Do not work for food that perishes, He advises His disciples, but for the food that endures for eternal life. When the furrow of the brow signaling incomprehension comes over them, He proclaims: I am the Bread of Life, whoever comes to me will never be hungry, whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. At the heart of the Eucharist are the bread and wine that, by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, becomes His Body and Blood. Faithful to the Lord’s command the church continues to do, in His memory and until His glorious return, what He did on the eve of His passion. At the offertory of the Mass, we give thanks to the Father for the bread, the cup, for the work of human hands, for the fruit of the vine. When Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist, He gave a new and definitive meaning to the blessing of the bread and wine. As we mature in faith in the Holy Eucharist, we can grow in our thankfulness each time we encounter this wonder. It is so easy to become cold and indifferent toward Christ so humbly and mysteriously present. When we acknowledge the truth of Christ present, we also affirm the reality of grace, the gift of His very own Divine Life, granted undeniably to each of us blessed to be called to the Supper of the Lamb. We must continually fan the flame of our faith through every means available so that, drawn to receive our Eucharistic Lord humbly and reverently, we may behold the miracle of our own lives transformed, made holy and happy by this greatest of gifts. In the Holy Eucharist Christ continues to work the greatest of all miracles. He nurtures and sustains us on our journey through life. It is from the Eucharist that we draw life and sustenance. It is from the Eucharist that we experience Christ among us. It is from the Eucharist that we find hope for the world. We come to Him not because of the signs He works, not for any selfish motive, but to love Him, to accept Him, to exalt Him, not as a bread king but for who He truly is, our Savior, our Lord, our humble One who is truth and love. In a few moments, Christ will fill us with the only food we will ever need. Himself.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated THIS Wednesday, August 4th at 12:45 p.m.
