I was just vegging out the other day while leafing through my voluminous tomes of food history, when I came across some interesting facts about the history of salads that I thought I'd toss out there for you to enjoy as well. Lettuce begin with the name itself: Salad. The word, like the similar-sounding French term "Salade" has roots in the Latin "Herba Salta." As you have no doubt guessed, the literal translation of the phrase is "salted herbs," a name that makes sense when one considers how early cultures liked to serve their greens. The dressings of choice in those ancient times often contained a great deal of salt for flavor. As long ago as 2,000 years, Babylonian and Egyptian lovers of greenery would dress their salads with oil and vinegar, often adding imported spices from the Far East. If you immediately began to wonder about the origin of Caesar salad and possible connections to Roman emperors, you would be mistaken, however. This dish was only invented in 1924, by Caesar Cardini, a Mexican restaurant owner from Tijuana. The closest connection you'll get between the Caesars and dishes of leafy greens might be the quote from Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, in which Cleopatra refers to her "salad days, when I was green in judgement." Royals in Europe enjoyed a many different unique variations on the salad through the years, from the potato and sardine salad favored by Henry IV to the celery root and lettuce mixture Mary, Queen of Scots, would dine upon.

As for dressings, most of the varieties you enjoy today were not standardized in their recipes and formulations until fairly recently. Though mayonnaise has been around for at least 200 years since its introduction at the table of some forgotten French nobleman, such favorites as Ranch or Thousand Island were not widely consumed until the 20th century, when methods of preservation and storage allowed them to be manufactured, packaged and distributed on a massive scale. Now, thanks to the Industrial Revolution, we can all eat that meal of kings, salad, in all the delicious iterations we could possibly desire!

Order Pickup and DeliveryPick-up Orders:

Returns and CreditsDVF guarantees that all merchandise is fresh and saleable when shipped from our warehouses. For issues requiring credits or product returns, please note:

Credits:• Call the Credits and Returns Department 1-800-733-4191 and ask for ext. 5045 within five (5) calendar days of order receipt to report delivery discrepancies requiring credit.• Customer must have original invoice/document number to receive credit.

Return Procedure: • Call the Credits and Returns Department 1-800-733-4191, and ask for ext. 5045 within ten (10) calendar days to report issues requiring product returns.• Authorizations issued for returnable product.• Return pickup will be arranged to coincide with your next delivery. • If you will not have a delivery within 21 days, please notify us.

Return Requirements: • Return authorization from Dutch Valley Credit and Returns Department required.• Drivers and sales team are not permitted to bring back any items until authorization has been issued by the Returns Department.• Merchandise returned for credit must be in saleable condition in original cartons, clean and free of all markings. • Seasonal items and special order items cannot be returned.
