Saving for Freckles

"Look at him, David. He's all alone." Jill pressed

her nose against the pet shop window. The puppy licked

the glass where Jill's nose was.

David laughed. "Let's go inside," he said.The pet store was cool and dark . Jill pushed her

finger through the cage. The puppy licked it and

wagged his tail.

"I wish we could take him home," Jill said.

Mr. Peep heard her. He opened the cage and putthe puppy in Jill's arms. Jill touched the small spots on

his nose.

"You have freckles," Jill said.David looked at Mr. Peep. "How much does he

cost?" he said.

"Only fifty dollars," Mr. Peep said.

Jill k issed the top of the puppy's head. "Fiftydollars," she said. "I have some money at home."

"So do I," David said.

Jill handed the puppy back to Mr. Peep. "Bye

Freckles," she said. "We'll be back soon."

David was already out the door. "Come on!"

Jill and David emptied out their piggybanks onto

the k itchen table.

"We have forty dollars," David said. "We need tenmore."

Dad walked in. "Wow," he said. "You're rich!"

"Not rich enough," Jill said . "We need ten more

dollars.""Why?" Dad asked.

"We want to buy a puppy, but he costs fifty

dollars," David said.

"A puppy?" said Dad. "A puppy takes a lot of

work.""We know, Dad," said Jill. "We could do it. We

would feed him and give him baths and take him for

walks."Dad sat down. "If you could buy him, where would

you get money for his food?"

David and Jill looked at each other.

"Oh," Jill said."I didn't think of that," David said.

Jill sighed . "Poor Freckles," she said. "He wanted

to come home with us."

"How much would it cost to feed a puppy, Dad?"

David said."Ten dollars each week should be enough."

"So we need ten dollars to buy Freck les and thenten dollars every week."

"That's right," Dad said. "I'll give you five dollarsto wash my car every week .

David smiled "Great!" he said. "We only need five

more dollars a week."

"Maybe other people want their cars washed too,"

Jill said .

David and Jill made signsand hung them up in the

street. Soon the phone rang.

"Hello?" Jill said.

"Hello, this is Mrs.Peters. Would you like to

wash my car every

Saturday?"

"Yes please, Mrs. Peters.

We will make your car looklike new. Thank you!"

The phone rang again and again. Soon David and

Jill had four cars to wash every week."We will make twenty dollars a week, David!" Jill

smiled.

"That's enough to feed F reck les," David said.

A week later, Jill and David went to the pet shop.David put fifty dollars on the counter. "We want to buy

a puppy, Mr. Peep," he said.

Jill pointed at Freck les and Freckles wagged his

tail.

"We want to buy that puppy!" she said.
