Marine units were dispatched and set up a boom to attempt to contain the

For the last three and a half decades
the average number of incidents
involving large oil spills from tankers
has reduced progressively and since
2010 stands at an average of 1.8 large
oil spills per year.

wo large spills (>700 tones) were recorded for 2015. Both releases of oil occurred as a result of a
collision. The first, in Singapore in January, resulted in a spill of approximately 4,500 tones of crude
Six medium spills (i.e. between 7 and
700 tonnes) of various oils were also
recorded for 2015 including cargoes of
asphalt, naphtha and slurry oil, as well
as bunker fuels. Whilst this is slightly higher than the average of medium sized spills for this decade, it is
still far below the averages for previous decades.
The data held includes the type of oil spilt, the spill amount, the
cause and location of the incident and the vessel involved. For
historical reasons, spills are generally categorised by size, <7
tonnes, 7-700 tonnes and >700 tonnes (<50 bbls, 50-5,000 bbls,
>5,000 bbls), although the actual amount spilt is also recorded.
Information is now held on approximately 10,000 incidents, the
vast majority of which (81%) fall into the smallest category i.e. <7
tonnes.
Information is gathered from both published sources, such as the
shipping press and other specialist publications, as well as from
vessel owners, their insurers and from ITOPF’s own experience
on site at incidents. Unsurprisingly, information from published
sources generally relates to large spills, often resulting from
collisions, groundings, structural damage, fires or explosions,
whereas the majority of individual reports relate to small,
operational spillages. Reliable reporting of small spills (<7 tonnes)
is often difficult to achieve.

Petro Rabigh Committed to Zero Marine Pollution
nce again Regional Clean Sea Organization (RECSO) will conduct a Port Clean-up day in October,
2016. The main objective of this environmental event is to increase environmental awareness to all
who are visiting / working inside RECSO’s member ports. Invitations will be extended by RECSO members
to those who are interested in the due date.
Petro Rabigh is the world’s largest integrated oil refining and petrochemical complex built in a single phase,
and as a 400,000 barrel per day refinery and one of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s largest producers of
polypropylene, polyethylene, mono ethylene glycol and propylene oxide, the company has since its
foundation been committed to the protection of the environment.
In 2011, two years after its operations began, Petro Rabigh was awarded certifications in Quality
Management (ISO 9001:2008), Environmental Management (ISO 14001:2004) and Occupational Health
and Safety Management (OHSAS 18001:2007), making it the first and largest integrated refining and
petrochemical production company in the region to obtain all three simultaneously. Located on the eastern
shores of the Red Sea with its own port facility, Petro Rabigh has rigorous measures in place to protect the
marine environment. Its Marine Section is fully prepared to deal with hydrocarbon and petrochemical
spillages swiftly and effectively with both skilled manpower and material resources to carry out the
appropriate protective and clean-up measures. Onshore and offshore crews conduct regular drills to ensure
readiness to respond to spillages, and the Marine Section is equipped with more than 2000 meters of oil
booms and different types of skimmers able to recover approximately 400 tons of oily water per hour.
In addition to the company’s participation in RECSO-coordinated events such as Marine Ports Cleanup
Day, Petro Rabigh conducts an annual marine environmental compliance survey that studies sensitive
ecosystems like coral reef, mangrove and salt marshes, water and sediment quality and bioaccumulation,
and monitors water discharge to the marine environment and groundwater quality.
Petro Rabigh’s commitment to zero marine pollution is part of its continuous enhancement of environmental
and occupational health strategies to ensure sustainable development. “
