Editor's notes

Regular readers of this publication know that we had a real flap last year in Canada, especially in our western provinces. We had fully intended documenting every sighting but looking at our many reports decided to keep them in our files for reference only. There were just too many and would have taken up an entire issue even though briefly described. We will continue with recent reports this time, again using only the more unusual stories.

We're living in a new age. The visual age. The age of graphics. Today nearly everything is ori

ented towars sight. And sound. Although we &ren't enclosing phonograph records with SS&S, we are trying to give you a better visual approaco to supplement the reading material on every pee. We feel you will grasp the situation even faster if you have an artist s interpretation to accompany the stories. From now on, as much as will be possible to illustrate events for you will be a feature we hope you'll enjoy. The sketches and photos will not be extra large if a suitable smaller one will suffice. After all, the printed word is a necessary prerequisite to ensure all details are included. We are delighted to see that at least three u.s. ufozines are starting the trend to illustrated, offset publications.

We'd like to mention to our readers who send us mail that due to the amount of material received from them and other sources, it is not always possible to answer immediately. So don't despair, we do our best to reply to every letter that needs an answer, even if it takes a month or more to get around to it. If we answered everything right away we'd never get any work done on our publication plus the other requests we get for artwork, articles, etc.

We received a letter the other day that may interest some of you with similar ideas. Mrs. Marian Nigl asked us "Why not give SS&S a new catchy name • • •

like uThe Last Frontier", then an auxiliary heading re the flying saucers. Mrs. Nigl suggests it would appeal to a better class, students, etc. Our answer to this is that I've always felt when an editor changes the name of his magazine (as some have TOO often), he loses the identity his readers have built up between him and his magazine. The meaning of the name itself isn't of primary importance, but who is behind it and what it stands for.

I'd also like to take a little space to thank those anonymous donors of "The Fly in Saucer Reader", "Flying Saucers Where Do They Come From" and "UFO -HO HO.". They are welcome additions to our library.

In SS&S #49 we reported the Shag Harbor, N.S., incident. Do you know what unofficial sources say the object was? They say it was a "stray" missile fired from Vandenburg AFB in California. This is only 3,000 miles away! We hope everyone in the line of fire will raise hell with the gov't authorities, even though this explanation is utterly ridiculous!

COVER STORY; "REPORT FROM CANADA" is a new column starting in the Fall issue of Saucer News and written by your editor. It will contain unusual reports from this country. SN's address is on page 19 of this issue.

The sketch and story o the UFO was printed in the April 9th edition of THE BVER, a Manitoban newspaper. The event occurred on April 3rd of this year ? on P.T.H. 12 near Beausejour. It took place around 11:30 p.m. and the UFO was about 400 feet above the highway and directly above the witne·ss. It gave off a very strange loud humming noise. Seven bands of different colored lights were spinning around the object as though they were on belts. Mr. Kryschuk watched it for 10 minutes, got into his truck & the UFO followed him the remaining 4 miles where it went into the southwest like a lightning bolt.

CANADIAN REPORTS 3-PLATE-SHAPED UFOs SIGHTED - A Cavan Township family claims to have watched three yellow objects in a V-formation speeding eastward above their home. It happened on March 17 at 4 : 50 p.m. Dan Mills, 55, who says he studied the objects through a powerful pair of binoculars, as did his wife and son estimated the speed at 450 mph and about a mile high. They disappeared rom view after 30 seconds or so. He and Mrs. Mills said that at 8:30 the same day a radio station reported a woman had telephoned to say she had seen similar objects some miles east of the Mills home. Mr. Mills claimed he had been sighting UFOs since the mid-1930s, and always in the Cavan Twp. area.

UFO BEEPS ON RECORD - A tape recording of UFO beepings was made by Mrs. G.C. Marshal! of Midnapore, Alberta. The noise is a strange regular beeping and is a new feature added to the rash o f UFO s1ghtings in the Calgary area. The tape is one of many which have been made. Earlier this year the first visual sighting oinciding with the sound was made in the Bragg Creek area. At least eight witnesses were present near the home of Harold N orton near Bragg Creek when the UFO was sighted. Russell Hill, the High River forestry tower lookout who has reported UFOs a number or times, claims he has heard the beeping noise on his radio on different occasions. He says other forest rangers have had a similar experience. (Calgary Albertan, April 1, 1968)

OVAL-S HAPED, GREEN UFO MAKES LANDING - G. Lovatt of N orth Bay, Ont., and a second person were sitting in a car on Hwy. 63 when they saw the object, about 75 feet in diameter appear to land in the bush near Balsam Creek. It was at a 30-degree angle with the highway. The object seemed to pulsate at

Aive-second intervals and was about a quarter mile away from them. They aw the object for more than 10 seconds. It was moving smoothly and much

lower than a meteor. The sighting was made at 3:25 a.m. ·

A NORAD Region spokesman at North Bay said that radar scopes at the SAGE complex failed to record any irregular activities in the sky over the area. A member of the Nugget staff was awakened by the roaring passage of the object overhead. He said the roar was accompanied by a flare of light pulsating from green to white that illuminated the interior of his home. (The North Bay N ugget, April 8, 1968)

The Stratford Beacon-Herald received this photo in the mail on March 26 from a person that did not include his name because'eople would laugh at him if it was mentioned". The writer said he saw something in Queen's Park made of metal that flew by very quickly and was 20 to 30 feet across. The object was seen by the writer and two friends with him at the time. He explained he had been in the park to take pictures of the Stratford Festival building so he snapped this and another picture of the object. He closed the letter by saying "Up until this time I did not believe in flying saucers.'' (Source: The Stratford Beacon-Herald, Ontario, March 27, 1968.)

NELSON FAMILY SEES FOUR UFOs The above photo is a photographer's interpretation of UFOs based on descriptions of Nelson residents as the objects flew above Elephant Mtn. The sighting took place on Friday, Jan. 5, 1968. The four UFOs hovered abo ve the CBC tower. They were s.E:Jen by Mrs. Marilyn Horser and five other peo ple. She said she gazed in disbelief as the UFOs soundlessly zig-zagged over the dawn sky. The witnesses peered at the objects through b1nonoculars for nearly an hour. '' The UFO I saw through the binoculars was round on top, flat at the bottom with a green glow," sa id Mrs. Horser. Her husband said the one he was looking at looked as if it had flames coming out of the top of it and cascading over the side. But strange things were happening on the ground too. Big white tow:-. era of cloud appeared by the CEC tower. They hadn't been there when they first saw the UFOs. One cloud went straight up in the sky just like a ruler with a round blob on the top. It was quite white but after ten minutes the cloud just

REO TANGUIAR UFO SEEN BY FARMER Ronald Hale who farms about seven mi les southeast or Gilbert Plains, Man., said while he and his tamily were driving to to wn at 6:5 5 p.m., Ma rch 2nd, they saw the mysterious object. He immediately stopped his car to bette r observe a huge re.ctangular object seve%'al hundred feet above the ground a few miles west of where the car was parked. Mr. Hale described the tlr,ing o bject as ''much bigger than a DO 8 1 and about three stories high with no windows observable. It was emitting black smo ke. By this time, two other cars had parked nearby to wa t c h . A ll motorists shut off their moto rs to hear if the object was making any noise but could hear none. After manoeuvring about· a bit, the o bject too k off at a 45-degree angle, about the speed or a jet. One car tra iled the object and noticed it had a tail and was emitting a red streak. Mr. Hale said so me friends of his going from Brandon to Gilbe rt Plains on Hwy. 10 spotted the flying object at Moon Lake, about 30 miles south of Dauphin. (Winnipeg Free Preas, Man., Mar.5, 1968)

FLEET OF UFOs SPOTTED OVER HOSPITAL Around 9:45 p.m a small fleet or " somethings" appeared in the sky just south of Milton D istrict Ho spital on Sunday , March 3, 1968. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Pettigrew were travelling along No. lO sideroad near Hwy . 2 5 when Mrs. Pettigrew observed two off-white lights behind the hospital. They were of similar height and statio nary. As they pulled to the side of the road to watch, a third light aproached the two briefly fro m the east. It hovered for only a moment before the original two disappeared out of sight in a southerly direction. The third went back towards the east. (The Champio n, Milton, Ont. Ma r. 6, 1968 )

Thi s inc ient happened in Thoap son , Manitoba , betwen June 15-30th o r 1967 . It occ urrd a t 6:0 0 p.m. and wa s seen for only three o r tour minutes by Mr. and Mr s . D.F. LeMa rquands , three or their chi ldren , four ne i ghbors and two other children .

Mrs. LeMarquands had just entered the house when she heard a beeping no ise at abo ut one sec o nd interva ls . Looking out the wi ndow , she saw dirt and debris moving ra pidly aro und the ho use in a c ircula r pattern. Upon going outside, she saw her husband who had just driven into the yard. He and the five children were staring up into the sky. At first only dust and dirt, moving in a vo rtex could be seen, but then Mrs. LeMarquands was able to see the object causing the disturbance. She described the o bject as being

1 Jl large and shaped much like a pack o f cigarettes 1 1 although she later commented that it might have been cube-shaped. It was revo lving co unter-

clo ckwise and appeared to have alternating shiny aluminum and then black sides as it mo ved. It had no

apparent o penings o r lights, and it was now dead silent. -/ As sh watched the object, Mrs. LeMarquands was distract

ad by a s·cuffling sound an1 she lo oked to the ground to see a 13-year-o ld boy fro m across t he street pinni ng do wn

her 8-year-old daughter. At this time the o bject started mo ving o ff at a 45-degree angle, levelled off, ho vered, and then left o n a level course to wards the so utheast.

Mrs. LeMarquands attention was then drawn to ward the children, all of whom were visibly shaken, except her 8-year-o ld daughter . The whirlwind had stopped and the little girl was no w

standing by herself. The o ther children were eventually suffi ci ently calm in order to say that their 8-year-old playate had risen into the a i r to wards the slowly revo lving object. The 13-year-o ld bo y had gra bbed her when she was about three feet o ff the ground. The children reported that the little girl's skirt, blouse, and hair had ridden straight up he r body when she was risin g. When asked if she could remember anything, the girl replied that she could remember nothing from the instant the wind started until she stoo d up. Mrs. LeMarquands further repo rted that all the debris that had been blo wn up had been dro pped i n a r,ard acro ss the street as the object mo ved o ff. She also stated that the ' wind" had revo lved around their home only, without touching neither o f the neighbo ring homes no r the grass o utside the ••circle". ''It was almo st as tho ugh a huge lass co ntainer had been placed over them, the area invo lved was so exact, Mrs. LeMarquand reported. ( Credit : CAPRO, P.O. Box 1316, Winnipeg 1, Man. Credit: L . THIS UFO IS DIFFERENT! - Fred Fassmore was out pruning fruit trees on h1s smll rarm two miles west of Dundas, Ont., when he saw a UFO . It was orange in the center and black toward the edges. It was the shape of a box kite but "it wasn't as square as you would expect a box kite to be." It fits no description of any known aircraft he has ever see.n or heard about. His qualifications as an observer are impressive, serving with the RCAF and 12 years in the RCAF counter-intelligence. '' • • • it was nothing that exists, as far as I know, in our arsenal, 11 he said. He had special occasion to look up at the sky that day of April 7 as his two sons were on a flight as part of their a tr cadet training. The object appeared to be beneath the plane. "At first it looked as though it was hanging beneath the plane,'' Passmore said. The UFO was about 60-degrees from the horizo·n and continued in a westerly direct·ion and took about 3 or 4 secon.1s to pass from view completely. The object was at about 20,00 0 feet but left no condensation trail. The sky was clear, sun shining and viewing conditions were excellent. The object was five or six-sided, with two sides quite long, giving it an almost coffin shape, with a point at the head. (Hamilton Spectator, April 8, 1968)

FLYING SAUCER LANDS ON GEORGIAN BAY - An Espanola, Ont., woman and her family were vacationing in Parry Sound at a cottage and had been watching the eclipse of the moon when they looked out into the bay and noticed what they

I first thought to be a fire. 11It was a fiery glow at first and it seemed to be moving. It came closer and we noticed it was a cft of some type with red, yellow and green lights. We watched it for about an hour until it sped across the channel and up into the· sky," sa id the woman. The craft appeared about three inches long in perspective and remained outside the 5-mile buoy in the bay. "It moved back and forth verr, quickly. It seemed to us that the thing was moving with a circular motion, 1 she aded. (Elliot Lake Standard, Ont., April 1·9, 1968)

MYSTERIOUS LIGHT HOVERS OVER FARM - A hovering light attracted the attention of three Medicine Hat men about 8:40 p.m. on April 18th. Nick Didack, his father Mike, and brother-in-law Adolph Leis saw the strange phenomenon high above a farm near Pashley from the Deering farm located seven miles south of Pashley. Mr. Didack said the three heard a loud, eerie sound somewhat similar to the noise made by a jet and, scanning the sky, observed a brilliant white light overhead. The light at times was so intense it appeared to illuminate the whole sky and noted the source of light seemed to be revolving as intensity waxed and waned . The light remained stationary tor about four minutes before drifting oft to the north and later toward the east. The object was visible to the men for about ten minutes. (Medicine Hat News, Alta., April 19, 1968)

MYSTERY AT CHARLESWOOD On Sunday night, Oct. 22 and Monday a.m. Oct. 23, the HCAF, ROMP and others were trying to determine what more than 17 persons repo rted over the Westdale area at that time. The UFO was first sighted at about 6:4 5 p.m. A Westdale woman saw it hovering over a house across the street. Another Westdale homeowner and his wife saw the lights which were now a red color. They moved at great speed and changed shape and seemed to form a figure 7. Two streets over, a salesman and a saleswoman were readying to clo se up their office in a new subdivision of several hundred new houses, some with only the basements dug out so far. Across from five show homes is a vacant ploughed field. To the west of one of the houses is a triangular field separated from the houses by a street and a drainage ditch. This was the field where their sighting took place.

The salesman was returning from one of the houses when he noticed directly ahead in the field about two hundred and fifty yards away, two small purplish-red lights tilted at an angle of 45 degrees. The distance be-tween them was a bout 15 0 feet • The A Woman's Narrow Print? ;· first light was stationary and appear-ed to be suspended in the air about the height of a telephone pole above the field. The light on the right seemed to be stationary on or slightly above the ground. The man walked closer and then saw a third light, a little brighter that appeared on the surface of the field between the first two. There was no sound. The saleslady joined him on the front lawn. The lights then blossomed to a diameter of 2 or 3 feet and began to pulsate, brighten and dim at 2 or 3 second intervals, but not in sequence with each other. The lights started moving again, at times converging on the couple and then retreating to their original positions in the air. The salesman remembered he had binoculars in the car and went to get them when a car approached. He flagged them down and two men, two women and two small girls got out of the car and stood watching the pulsating lights. Just then, a fifth light dropped down through the clouds. It hung under the clouds, straight above them, casting a rosy glow on the clouds above it. The other lights started to drift about lOO feet northward. Just then airplanes were heard over Charleswood. One plane passed overhead. Finally, the liShts changed places into a geometrically perfect triangle being led by the first light, dipping and bobbing over the highway. They reached a hydro line, broke off formation into a single line, the wires lighting up as they sped over them. Later they hovered over a TV broadcasting tower and then took off into the northwest. The next morning the salesman and a foreman went looking for evidence in the field. A small pile of stones in a circular heap and surrounded by many

ANYONE WHO PLANS to mess around with fly. ing. saucers should read Mike Campione' .

Mike is the lead ing UFO legist in Cinnaminson, N. J. A UFOlogist is a student of UFOs, which means Un· identified Flying· Objects , which means Flying Saucers.

Mike is president of the Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America. He spends a lot of time lee· turing on the subject. I don't know where he gets all his information, but he knows things about UFOs I never read anxwhere else.

His lectures to audiences of Elementary through College levels , members of Church, Fraternar, Service , P.T.A. and Business groups, acclaim him with standing ovations. His "down-to-earth," enlighfen ing , entertaining and provoc ative presentation is considered TOPS. His penetrating research reveals hitherto hidden factors , astounding implications, to laymen and scientists .
