Five years ago he ran for the Kampala city mayoral seat as an independent candidate, but lost again to Lukwago. He now wants to stand as Lord Mayor if that position remains. He is also the NRM vice-chairperson for Kampala and wants to retain that position as well. His wife, Zziwa, is a member of the East African Legislative Assembly, now on the backbench after she was impeached from the position of the speaker last year. Before that, she was the MP for Kampala (1996 and 2001) before she was defeated in 2006 by FDC’s Nabila Sempala. Zziwa now wants to pit herself against Sempala again. She is also interested in NRM Women’s League chair, which is now held by Jackline Mbabazi, wife of former prime minister Amama Mbabazi. Yokasi Bihande Bwambale and Winnie Kiiza This couple hails from the FDC stronghold of Kasese district and has been serving together in the Ninth Parliament. Kiiza is Kasese Woman MP while Bihande, is MP for Bukonzo East. Their political offices in Parliament one time put them in compromising situations. Kiiza was the opposition chief whip when the husband was put in line for a possible ‘whipping’ During an interview soon after joining the Parliament, Kiiza was asked what she thinks of being with her husband, both at work and in Parliament. “That is even better for us. It makes our love stronger because you begin to appreciate each other more and more. It has brought us closer than it would have been if we were in a long-distance relationship,” she said. The couple is running again for the same positions. Evelyn Anite and Allan Kajik Evelyn Anite is remembered for her successful project that saw President Museveni stand as a sole candidate in the NRM. She was youth MP for northern Uganda when she was named Minister for Youth and Children Affairs. She is now eyeing the Koboko Woman MP seat, currently held by Margaret Baba Diri. Her husband, Allan Kajik, was deputy resident city commissioner for Kampala, but has resigned to join his wife in politics. He wants to contest for one of the newly created constituencies in northern Uganda, but prefers to keep his opponent guessing. “I will seek election in Nebbi, but I cannot reveal which position. I prefer to keep it secret as my campaign strategy,” he said. And his wife, Salaamu Musumba — the current Kamuli LC5 chairperson — wants another term in office. The couple is unique because each belongs to a different party. Musumba is contesting under NRM, while his wife in FDC, where she is one of the founders. Musumba has enjoyed unassailable support, representing the Buzaaya from 1996 to 2011 as MP, but his wife failed to get back after just one term as Bugabula County MP, in Kamuli, in 2006. It was not until the Kamuli LC5 seat fell vacant that she opted to become the district chairperson. She won a by-election and replaced Ahmed Kawugu (RIP), whose election was nullified in 2011 for lack of academic papers. Fred and Solome Mukisa Fred Mukisa served as the fisheries state minister from June 2006 to May 2011 when he was replaced by Ruth Nankabirwa. He was then MP for Bukooli central, Bugiri district. He also lost during the 2011 national elections to Siraji Lyavala during the NRM primaries. Lyavala was later defeated by Wafula Oguttu of FDC. Mukisa intends to make a comeback for the same seat. His wife, Solome, is also the former deputy director of Women’s Affairs at the NRM Secretariat and has also served in the Constituent Assembly. She is now the executive director of Uganda Community Based Alliance for Child Welfare. She is, therefore, no stranger to politics. She has declared her intentions to contest as Woman MP for Bugiri, a position she lost to Justine Kasule Lumumba in 2011. Maj. (rtd.) John Kazoora and Naome Kabasharira Maj. John Kazoora is one of the former bush war heroes who had a bitter ending with his comrades in the ruling party and switched to the opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). His partner, Naome Kabasharira, remained in the NRM and has been the district Woman MP for Ntungamo twice, in the Sixth Parliament and now, in the ninth. Maj. Kazoora has lost the previous two attempts, but has not given up and is in the race for Mbarara municipality MP come 2016. He will be battling it out with the winner of the municipality primaries in the NRM that is either the incumbent Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo or the challenger Michael Tusiime. His wife on the other hand, will be facing her predecessor, Beatrice Rwakimari and Joseline Kamateme at the NRM primaries before going up against Maureen Natuhwera (FDC) and Dorah Namara of the Uganda Federal Alliance.
