The dignity of resembling the Almighty is common to all people; we should then love them all as ourselves, as living images of the Deity. It is in this that we belong

ADULT FAITH FORMATION 8 Week Series

“The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis

Fr. Chris will be facilitating an 8 week book study of C.S. Lewis’s “The Screwtape Letters”. Join us as we delve in-to sin and temptation, good verses evil, virtue and vice, all from point of view of the devil. In this 1942 spiritual classic, a senior demon instructs a younger demon on how to tempt a soul and lead them away from God. This perspec-tive helps us shine the light of the gospel into the subtle nature of temptation and can help us examine our own spiritual life to make sure we are on the right path. C.W. Lewis’s style is easy to read, engaging and enlightening.

Choose either Tuesday MORNING at 9:30 AM or Tuesday EVENING at 7:00 PM session. Dates: NOVEMBER 26th DECEMBER 3rd, 10th, 17th JANUARY 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th Cost of the book is $12. + Shipping. Please sign up in the social hall or call to sign up as soon as possible so that books can be ordered. Joanne 973-827-3248

Prayers for the Sick and Dying

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the best means of assisting the dying. Jesus revealed the power of this prayer to St. Faustina. The Lord gave many promises regarding recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the sick and/or dying.

There are parishioners who regularly pray the chaplet. We have a prayer chain and are accepting prayer requests.

If you are interested in joining the prayer chain, please contact Bea Harrigan at (973) 827-0083. If you have a special prayer request, or prayers for a loved one who is sick and/or dying, you may call Bea Harrigan, Cheryl Avery at (973) 702-1342, or Denise Drogo at (973) 875-6863.

Down through the ages, Christian communities have honored and remembered their dead. We see their names on the walls and windows of churches and on grave markers in cemeteries. We read their names in

prayers of intercession and recall their anniversaries.

Especially during the month of November - with its solem-nity of All Saints and commemoration of All Souls - Catho-lics both remember the dead and prepare for their own death.

Again this year we have another opportunity to remember those who have died. Our “Book of the Names of the Dead” will be displayed in the back of Church near the Baptismal font. A candle is lit and placed nearby, symbol-izing that the deceased have shared in the waters of Bap-tism; dying with Christ and rising to new life. The place-ment of the book in this place gives us hope that our be-loved dead now share in Christ’s Resurrection.

Parishioners are invited to enter the names of loved ones who have died since this time last year. The book will be left out from the solemnity of All Saints until the start of Advent. All those who have been remembered will be prayed for during those intercessions at our liturgies in November.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS St. Francis de Sales FOOD PANTRY

Thanksgiving time is just a few weeks away. Food Basket Slips are in the Atrium. Please take one/several and pur-chase the food, so that our families in need will have a blessed Thanksgiving. The items should be returned no later than November 17th, so that the baskets may be prepared and distributed in time for Thanksgiving. Please also continue to shop and pick up items throughout the year for the food pantry. We ap-preciate your dedication to our Ministry.

Bless someone else's Thanksgiving!

In our world today, speaking about the devil and spiritual warfare might seem out of place. Haven’t we “moved on” from seemingly superstitious old beliefs? However, each Sunday as we pray the creed, we rec-ognize God as “the creator of all things visible and invisible”. As Catholics we believe in a world beyond the physical world we can perceive, the supernatural spiritual world. Angels, demons and the devil all exist and there is a spiritual battle that goes on between the forces that serve God and help us grow closer to Him and those that seek to draw us away from Him. This is why the Church on earth is called the Church Militant, because we are involved in this battle, as we seek to follow God’s will and resist the many tempta-tions that lead us to sin and away from God. Luckily we are not alone in this fight and we don’t rely on our own strength but on the grace and strength that comes from God and through the sacraments, our prayer, and our works of charity. We also rely on the intercession of the Angels and Saints, the Church Triumphant in heaven to help us. In a letter to the faithful in September 2018, Pope Francis called on the faithful throughout the world to pray especially “to St. Michael the Archangel to protect the church from the devil, that always aims to divide us from God and among ourselves.” The traditional St. Michael the Archangel pray-er dates to around 1886 when Pope Leo XIII asked that it be prayed at the end of Masses. St. Michael the Archangel is considered the guardian and pro-tector of God’s people. He continues to battle against evil and is a source of strength for those tempted by doubt, discouragement, infidelity and despair. While the practice of reciting the St. Michael prayer has fallen out of practice given the challenges and darkness we see in our world and even in our own Church, I believe returning to the practice of ask-ing St. Michael the Archangel to intercede for our pro-tection against evil and the power of the Devil will be spiritually beneficial for our parish, our Church and the world. That is why starting the first Sunday of Advent we will begin to recite the St. Michael the Archangel prayer after the dismissal from Mass before the final hymn. Cards with the prayer will be placed in the front of all the hymnals to assist in learning this powerful prayer. Additionally, Prayer cards will be distributed to fami-lies, by the ushers as you leave Mass so you can continue to pray during the week. - Fr. Chris

Saint Raphael Kalinowski, Priest. Raphael Kalinowski was born to Polish parents in the city of Vilni-us in 1835. Following military service, he was condemned in 1864 to ten years of forced labor in Siberia. In 1877 he became a Carmelite and was ordained a priest in 1882. He contributed greatly to the restoration of the Discalced Carmelites in Poland.
