Spirit of Things Fr. Bob Miller
Welcome To St. John XXIII Parish In reading these past few weeks about St. John XXIII, I have come to see what a great patron saint he is for our new parish. I’m sure that I’ll be calling attention to various characteristics of his life to inspire us moving forward, but one of his chief characteristics is the pastoral care with which he reached out to people. Maybe it was the simple, humble family into which he was born in northern Italy that he never forgot. Maybe it was the pastoral care of his own bishop that rubbed off on him when Pope John was a young priest. However it happened, a characteristic that John XXIII had in all that he did was the care and concern that he had for people. We have tried to capture this characteristic of John in the image on the front of the bulletin: Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Jesus goes out to search for and bring back the lost sheep and leads all of the sheep with care. While we haven’t yet figured out the exact tag line to put under the image, part of John XXIII’s motto was “Pax” or “peace.” Having looked at war, he noticed that many of them arose from differences in religion. Having been stationed as a diplomat for the Vatican in Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece, he came to see how important making peace between religions was. It became a major goal for him later as Pope in calling the Second Vatican Council. As we begin our journey together as one parish under our patron, St. John XXIII, it seems to me that caring for all of God’s people, you—our parishioners, is a great place to start. Part of it is us priests trying to care for all of you, but it’s also all of us caring for one another as the members of the One Body of Christ that we are. And it involves specifically reaching out and inviting back those who have fallen away. Pope John XXIII, pray for us! Help us to be like Jesus, the Good Shepherd, for one another!
Welcome, Fr. David Green While I like to say that nothing surprises me anymore, Bishop Zubik has surprised me—and it’s a good surprise—by sending to St. John XXIII Parish Fr. David Green as our Parish Chaplain. Fr. David’s first responsibility will be to the residents of the nursing homes and institutions of our parish. As such, he will not be available to be regularly assigned to the Sunday Mass schedule. However, he can help out with confessions, visit the shut-ins and those who are sick, and he can occasionally fill in wherever needed. Although I’ve never worked with a parish chaplain priest before, I can say that in my mom’s parish, there is a parish chaplain, and although she is not a resident of an institution, he has become her favorite priest. Thank you, Bishop Zubik, for sending us help. Welcome, Fr. David Green, to the parish! Fr. David will begin on July 13.
Thanks For Your Cooperation
I thank everyone for your cooperation in helping us re-open in the limited capacity that we are able. Thanks for wearing face masks and thanks for making a reservation for Mass, which helps us manage our limited capacity that our buildings have with social distancing. A reservation guarantees that you have a seat available for you when you come to Mass, which is the primary reason we have had to resort to needing reservations. Thanks also to all who have followed the directions of our volunteers in being seated. It has come to my attention, however, of a handful of people being rude to our volunteers when being seated. I ask everyone to please cooperate with our volunteers. Because of our limited capacity, we try to fill up the spaces from the front to the back so that we can maximize the capacity that we have. As we celebrate Independence Day, we celebrate our freedom. During this time of pandemic, I also ask you to think about our social responsibility to cooperate with one another. Sometimes, our consumer mentality of needing to have “what I want, when I want it” gets in the way. Coming to church gives us an opportunity to exercise our freedom in being a Christian—to care for the common good and to make a sacrifice for the good of all.

Mass Schedule Changes—July 6 Please note the changes to the Mass schedule beginning Monday, July 6. Thanks for your patience as we experiment and tweak online reservations, space capacities, and the Mass schedule (at least to start with) for our new parish. The weekday Mass schedule will be: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
8:30 am at St. Benedict 9:00 am at St. Francis
Tuesday 9:00 am at St. Francis
Thursday 8:30 am at St. Benedict
On Saturday and Sunday, the Masses will be:
4:00 pm Saturday at St. Francis 5:00 pm Saturday at St. Benedict 8:00 am Sunday at St. Benedict 9:00 am Sunday at St. Francis 10:00 am Sunday at St. Benedict
Because we must limit the number of people who can be in the church, you will need to reserve a seat to attend the Mass. To do so you can to go to our website (www.john23.org/mass-reservation) . We will live stream the Vigil Mass at St. Benedict at 5:00 pm on Saturday evening and daily Mass at St. Benedict on our website: www.john23.org.
Online Mass Reservations Our online reservation system for all Masses (both weekday and weekend) has changed to Flocknote. Reservations through Flocknote will be easier to manage and will eliminate the 24-hour cutoff for reservations prior to Mass. Each week a sign up will be sent out via Flocknote. If you are not on Flocknote, the Mass sign up will also be available on the Mass Reservations page on our website: www.john23.org/mass-reservations. After you select the Mass(es) you wish to attend, make sure that you change the number from 1 to the total number in your family that will be attending or you will not have enough seats reserved for everyone. You will no longer be asked to provide names for everyone attending so it is very important that we have the correct number of people attending. If you know someone who does not have Flocknote or does not have access to the Internet, go to our website link. This allows someone from outside our Flocknote system to make a reservation. If you are making a reservation for another person, you will enter their name and their phone number (It does not have to be cell phone). Thank you for your cooperation and prayers as we navigate this re-opening of our church buildings and return to worshiping together!
Outdoor Mass at St. Benedict Sunday, July 12 Mark your calendars for July 12 for an outdoor Mass in the St. Benedict parking lot. You can watch the Mass from the comfort of your car and listen on your FM car radio. No reservations are needed for this Mass. Details will be forthcoming on our website: www.john23.org.

Prayer for a Pandemic May we who are merely inconvenienced
Remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors
Remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home
Remember those who must choose between
Preserving their health or paying the rent.
May we who have the flexibility to care for our
children when their schools are closed
Remember those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel trips
Remember those who have no safe place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the
tumult of the economic market
Remember those who have no margin at all.
May we settle in for a quarantine at home as we
Remember those who have no home.
As Fear grips our nation, let us choose love.
During this time when we cannot physically wrap
our arms around each other,
Let us seek ways to be the loving embrace of God to
