If everyone changed to in-verter type air conditioners(homes and businesses) the is-land (Elmar) would be using30% less energy. One observerindicated that this savingwould compare to 3 Vader Pietwind turbine parks at $100million dollars per park! Wewill also have to figure in thesavings of $100 million dollarsfor the required infrastructure.

We can continue to figurethat if each home decided toinvest in the cost-saving LEDlights, another 20% could besaved. Now, do the math foryourself, 30% less energy byusing inverters and 20% lessby using LED, we will have re-duced our consumption by50% at the fraction of the costcompared to the millions justcited! Theoretically the returnon the investment in invertersand Led is between one andtwo years!

Today’s technology candefinitely help Elmar to signi -ficantly reduce (50%) her en-ergy consumption!

Obviously, Elmar’s incomewould be substantially reducedas well. However, by being cre-ative and innovative they couldeasily compensate for the re-duced revenue. Maybe, sellelectric cars and install electriccharging stations! For citizens, the reduction in our electricconsumption will mean morespending money for other ne-cessitates rather than for elec-tric bills. This would mean asignificant boost to the overalleconomy of the island!

Someone may be asking ...“is this feasible – everyonechanging to inverters andLED?” My response to thatquestion is, with the right kindof incentives and educationalprogram, business cooperationand political will; this is veryrealistic and achievable.And....what’s more, we wouldnot have to wait until 2020 toachieve it either!!

If we can reduce our con-sumption by 50% without thecost of millions, then withgreat wisdom choose the verybest form of alternative energyto account for the other needed50% we would be a much bet-ter example and model for therest of the world!

What we are about now, inthe estimation of those reallyin the know, will only make usthe laughing stalk of the world!Or, at least they will qualifyAruba as being sincere butvery wrong! And, being sin-cerely wrong is even more pa-thetic.

using the old air conditionersystems. We can safely say that50% of our energy productiongoes to keeping the islandcool. Now, if everyone throwsout their old air conditionerand installs the new cost-sa -ving inverter types, we wouldbe saving 30% energy. Anygood inverter saves 60% onenergy consumption!

could realistically achieve thesame goal...50% energy reduc-tion and efficient, by doingmore with less!

Here is my argument. Thetotal energy cost on Aruba isconcentrated in what we spendto keep cool. The largest per-centage of Elmar’s income isgenerated from air conditio -ners in businesses and homes

vested interests and expressedconcerns....to produce anothermeager 18% of energy at thecost of 100 million dollars!

But, if we take an educatedlook at the reality staring us inthe face, we must concludethat that humongous invest-ment could really be saved!Going GREEN for Aruba doesnot have to cost millions. We

HEALTH & LIVING

What is the flu?The flu is a contagious infec-tion of the nose, throat, andlungs caused by the influenzavirus.

Less often, it is spreadwhen you touch a surfacesuch as a faucet handle orphone that has the virus on it,and then touch your ownmouth, nose, or eyes.

Because the flu spreadsthrough the air and is verycontagious, it often strikes acommunity all at once, caus-ing an epidemic illness

The flu usually beginsabruptly, with a fever be-tween 102 and 106 °F. (Anadult typically has a lowerfever than a child.) The feverusually lasts for a day or two,but can last 5 days.

These symptoms (exceptthe cough) usually disappearwithin 4 - 7 days, but thetiredness persists for 1-2weeks.

How to combat the flu?Vaccination is the best

protection against contractingthe flu.

Everyone 6 months of ageand older should get vacci-nated against the flu.

Antiviral drugs are pre-scription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that canbe used for prevention ortreatment of flu viruses.

If you get sick, antiviraldrugs can make your illnessmilder and make you feelbetter faster.

The antiviral drugs workonly as a prevention, if youare sick already, it will nowcure your flu.

Flu is not the coldCommonly, when some-

one is not feeling good, peo-

ple have the tendency to saythat he has the flu, but notevery “flu” is caused by theflu virus.

Cold, stomach flu andother kinds of malaise arecaused by different otherviruses that cannot be pre-vented by taking the flu vac-cination.

A different type of fluevery year.

In countries with winterseasons, every year there is ahigh percentage of peoplegetting the flu.

Our island is frequentedby tourists who bring overthe flu and expose our com-munity to the virus.

The flu virus evolves rap-idly and new strains quicklyreplace the older ones, this iswhy everyone must vaccinateagainst the flu every year.

Does Vaccination againstthe flu help increase resist-ance?

There are different strainsof the flu worldwide that arebeing investigated, anticipat-ing which one will strike thepresent year.

Based on that informationa vaccine is then made everyyear.

Each seasonal flu vaccinecontains three dead fluviruses.

When injected with thevaccine the body reacts tothese viruses by producinganti bodies.

When the flu virus attacksthe body, these antibodieswill counteract and eliminatethe virus.

The vaccine cannot causethe flu as it consists of deadviruses.

It takes 1-2 weeks for thebody to create anti bodies; inthose 2 weeks time a personcan get the flu.

Does the flu vaccine helpprevent the flu?

Yes, the flu vaccine is for89% effective.

The 11% combats the fluif a person already has it bydiminishing the symptoms.

The vaccine also mini-mizes the possibilities forcomplications caused by theflu.

Remember, the vaccinedoes not prevent the cold orother kind of viruses.

The effectiveness of thevaccine is clinically proven

Is the flu vaccine safe?Yes, it is safe, because it

consists of dead viruses thatinduce the human body theproduce anti bodies againstthe flu.

The vaccine is rather welltolerated; mostly it causes alittle discomfort on the skinwhen injected.

This discomfort will dis-appear within 24 hours.

Who are at risk for theflu?

Everyone can get the flu, although there are certainpeople who are at higher riskif they get the flu; it is advis-able for them to take the vac-cine. They are: heart patients, patients with lung problems(like asthma, bronchitis, etc.)diabetics, patients with kid-ney problems and personswith a low immunity system.

They must consult theirdoctor about taking the fluvaccine.

When is person not atrisk for the flu?

If a person is not a heartpatient, has problems withlung or kidney, or has a lowimmunity system, there is noneed for a flu vaccine.

It is advisable though totake the vaccine, if, for exam-

ple, a person is 65 years old, cannot miss work for a week,or is constantly in contactwith many people, then, it isadvisable to consult withyour house doctor.

Can children be vacci-nated against the flu?

Yes, all children older than6 months can be vaccinatedagainst the flu. But checkfirst with a pediatrician.

In the U.S.A., authoritiesadvice everyone who is atrisk, to take the vaccine assoon as possible.

In the Netherlands, thehouse doctors automaticallycall all patients older than 65years to get a vaccine.

In the Netherlands only,an average of 2,000 peopledie every year of the flu, while 20 to 30,000 are hospi-talized.

On Aruba, the flu vaccineis available, through a doc-tor’s prescription, at alldrugstores.

A team at the Universityof California in Berkeley saidit had developed a method toadd carbon atoms to biofuelsobtained from fermentation -- currently not potent enoughto replace gasoline, jet fuel ordiesel.

Using the same 100-year-old biological process em-ployed in ethanol production, the team manufactured alco-hol and acetone by ferment-ing sugars obtainable fromanything from grasses, trees, corn, sugar beets, sorghum oreven plant waste, accordingto a study in the journal Na-ture.

The alcohol and acetone isthen put through a catalyticchemical process to boost thenumber of carbon atomsfrom two per molecule, as intraditional ethanol, to be-tween seven and 15, co-au-thor Harvey Blanch told AFP.

This is similar to the car-bon mass of current jet anddiesel fuels.

Using similar raw materi-als, "you get a better product

than ethanol for the sameprice," said Blanch.

"With the same amount ofsugar, we make a fuel that ismuch more effective thanethanol for the same price ofthe sugar."

Writing in Nature, theteam said it had developed "ahigh-yield method for trans-forming readily accessiblefermentation products from avariety of carbohydrates intoprecursors for petrol, dieseland jet fuels.

Blanch said ethanol, themost commonly used biofuel,is not very efficient as it can-not be transported in oilpipelines and so has to bemoved by truck, and does notmix well with diesel.

Also, "ethanol does nothave as much energy per gal-lon as some of the otherfuels".

The new method shouldaddress these problems, buthas so far only been used ona small, laboratory scale.

"We've produced enoughto have it tested in test en-gines, several litres," co-au-thor Dean Toste said.

"How far we are frommaking it viable? The chem-istry probably needs somework. But one could imaginethat this could be viable in acouple of years."

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Along catastrophic drought ledto the collapse of Maya cul-ture, a new study said thisweek confirming a controver-sial hypothesis linking its de-mise to climate change.

The study, published inFriday's issue of the journal"Science," involved an inter-national team of researchers.

"The rise and fall of Mayancivilization is an example of asophisticated civilization fail-ing to adapt successfully toclimate change," said JamesBaldini of Britain's DurhamUniversity.

"Periods of high rainfallincreased the productivity ofMaya agricultural systemsand led to a population boomand resource overexploita-tion."

The progressively drierclimate that followed led tothe depletion of resources, which in turn sparked politi-cal destabilization and war,he noted in a statement.

Then, "after years of hard-ship, a nearly century-longdrought from 1020 sealed thefate of the Classic Maya,"Baldini added.

The researchers came to

their conclusion after recon-structing a record of weatherin the Maya region -- whichincludes parts of Mexico, Be-lize, Guatemala and Hon-duras -- over the past twothousand years.

They did so by usingchemical and mineral analy-ses of stalagmite layers foundin Belize's Yok Balum cavesituated about a mile (1.5kilometers) from the ClassicPeriod Maya site of Uxbenkaand near other major Mayacenters that were impacted bythe same climate conditions.

Stalagmites are formed incaves by the continuous drip-ping of calcareous water, whichallows for the measurement ofprecipitation over time.

Considering the Mayakept a meticulous record ofpolitical events by inscribingthem on stone monuments, the authors of the study wereable to "chart how increasesin war and unrest were asso-ciated with periods ofdrought," according to thestatement.

OTTAWA - Canada's trade performance beat expectationsin September with a smaller than expected deficit of $826million, but economists note the sector remains a majordrag on growth. The trade report from Statistics Canadafound the deficit shrinking by almost half from a down-wardly revised $1.5 billion in August, aided by a welcome1.9 per cent uptick in exports. Analysts said the perform-ance was encouraging given the weakness in export mar-kets, particularly the U.S. and Europe. Economists hadexpected another $1.5 billion deficit. But they noted thaton the back of soft August and July numbers, the third-quarter tally will still weigh heavily on the economy.

LONDON (AFP) - KimiRaikkonen has put his moneywhere his mouth is by payingfor 500 t-shirts emblazonedwith his "leave me alone"radio message, broadcastduring last Sunday's AbuDhabi Grand Prix.

They are being printedand prepared as gifts from theFinnish driver to his Lotusteam and to mark his firstvictory since returning fromself-imposed F1 exile thisseason.

They also signal that he isback in the winners' circleand has every intention ofstaying in the limelight for aslong as he can - and certainlyreturning as a race winner.

The Finn returned thisyear after a two-season ab-sence and held off two-timechampion Fernando Alonsoof Ferrari at Yas Marina lastSunday to claim his 19th For-mula One win.

Raikkonen's blunt radiomessages to his team - in-cluding an instruction to"leave me alone" when in-formed of the gap to Alonso- became a sensation amongfans after Abu Dhabi.

The Lotus driver said hewas simply trying to stay fo-cused.

"Apparently there were afew of our radio messagesbroadcast on TV and I thinkin those moments you couldhear how much I just wantedto keep my head down, do

my job and win the race. AllI needed to know was the gapto the guy behind me.

"I think you can probablyfind other messages from mein the car if you searchYouTube; even from myshort time in NASCAR."

Raikkonen was confirmedat Lotus for the 2013 seasonjust ahead of Abu Dhabi andthe 2007 world champion be-lieves his win showed he hasmade the right decision.

"It's a pretty good way toshow that everyone's madethe right choice," saidRaikkonen.

"We've shown all seasonhow good we can be, and inAbu Dhabi we showed wecan win.

"There is more to come, Ipromis."

Raikkonen had finishedon the podium six times thisyear before winning in AbuDhabi and he thinks Lotus'spersistence was the key tothat elusive victory.

"We didn't give up," hesaid.

"We continued with theexhaust developments wemade during practice inKorea and India and the pacewas promising all weekendin Abu Dhabi."

He added that he has nointention to change his styleor approach to racing.

"I've never cared reallywhat people think - if I don'tfinish the next race, then

they'll think that I'm as bad asthat race. I'll just do my thing, and if I'm happy with whatI'm doing and it's the best itcan be for the team, thenthat's that.

"So it doesn't really botherme if people are thinking dif-ferently of me now, thanwhat they did three hours be-fore the race."

His Lotus team chief EricBoullier said he always hadconfidence in the Finn.

"This was maybe a sur-prise for anyone on the out-side of the team that doubtedhim, but for everyone on theinside it was not," said Boul-lier.

"Kimi has certainly madehis mark and shown that he'sback in Formula One andback at his best form. Havinghim back getting podiumsand a win is great for him, great for the team and greatfor the fans.

"Moreover 'Leave mealone, I know what I'm doing'(radio message) has alreadybecome a Formula 1 classic!"

Boullier, who joined theteam back in 2010, admittedthat his first victory as a teamboss was very emotional.

"I received over four hun-dred messages at the trackafter the chequered flag! Itwas a pleasant surprise to seethat a few of them were com-ing from our rival teams say-ing how happy they were forus.

After Novak Djokovic'swin over Tomas Berdych ear-lier on Friday, Murray knewhe only needed to take oneset off seventh seeded Tsongato guarantee his third appear-ance in the last four of theseason-ending event.

The 25-year-old took just33 minutes to achieve hisgoal and he eventually sealedhis second win of the tourna-ment, advancing from GroupA in second place behind

Djokovic, despite a late flurryfrom Tsonga.

After a glorious yearwhich has featured his firstGrand Slam title at the USOpen, a gold medal in theOlympic singles and a firstappearance in the Wimble-don final, Murray would loveto cap the campaign with afirst Tour Finals crown.

To do that he is likely tohave to get past defendingchampion Roger Federer, who will be the Scot's semi-final opponent on Sunday if,as expected, the Wimbledonchampion finishes top ofGroup B.

"It was quite a tough sce-nario and I was lucky to get

off to a good start," Murraysaid.

"When he was imposinghimself as he was in that sec-ond set, he is a hell of an ath-

lete and very tough to play."Tsonga, beaten in his pre-

vious two group matches, re-quired a straight sets victoryto sneak through at Murray'sexpense, but his track recordsuggested the outcomewouldn't go his way.

Murray had won six oftheir previous seven clashes, including a semi-final suc-cess at Wimbledon earlierthis year, while Tsonga hadlost all 11 of his meetingswith top-eight ranked playersthis year.

Cleverly mixing the paceand flight of his ground-strokes, Murray quickly tookcharge and tempted Tsongainto a series of rash shotsfrom the baseline that giftedthe Scot a break in the open-ing game.

Murray continued to baf-fle Tsonga with his astuteshot selection and secured asecond break for a 3-0 leadwhen the frazzled Frenchman

drove a forehand into the net.Tsonga, the Tour Finals

runner-up 12 months ago, fi-nally got on the scoreboardwhen he held serve in thefifth game, but Murray re-fused to relinquish hisstrangehold and easily closedout the set.

Murray kept his foot onthe gas and broke in the firstgame of the second set thanksto a Tsonga double-fault.

Yet, with defeat lookingcertain, Tsonga underlinedwhy he can be so frustratingas he suddenly started play-ing with real purpose andbroke Murray to love to levelat 4-4.

Tsonga saved two breakpoints at 5-5 and kept thepressure on Murray, who hadto save a set point to force atie-break.

But the Scot refound hisrhythm in the breaker andsome searing groundstrokesended Tsonga's resistance.
