In Concert: Brad Allen TrioWednesday, May 18th6-8 PM Come join us in the Swan Room at the Library for a music event featuring the Brad Allen Trio. For those of you who don’t know Brad Allen, he’s an American vocalist, songwriter, and drummer, based out of Kansas City, MO. He performs and writes music in several genres. Most of the jazz he performs and writes is straight-ahead. If you enjoy Nat King Cole, Diana Krall, and Harry Connick Jr., you will probably enjoy his music. Allen’s songwriting and musical style influences are firmly rooted in the jazz classics. “I see so many people trying to do something new, but to me it’s all been done before. They seem to think that combining contemporary sounds and other genres with jazz is an original idea. But most of these ideas were already thoroughly explored by the jazz fusion bands of the 70’s. What I don’t see in jazz today are people trying to write really good songs on the same level as the songs that became our jazz standards,” says Allen. “I’m also trying to reach more of the general public with my music, rather than just the elite jazz crowd. I’ve always enjoyed vocal jazz, and the general public relates more to songs and vo- calists than instrumental music. That’s why I picked this particular musical direction.” If you enjoy jazz music, bring the family and come join us for a fun music filled evening. Snacks will be available. Don’t forget our 1K before K program at the library. This is a program that you can start with your new- born child and work on until they complete Kinder- garten. The goal is to read 1000 books to them. Reading the same book multiple times counts also. When they finish they will receive a book. AMR’s Hands Only Compression Day—May 18th9 to NoonSwan Room. Welcome to the Storyteller Café—Come in for a book and stay for lunch!

Lunches will be served from 11:30 to 12 each day Monday-Friday, starting May 31st and ending August 12th. This year we will be serv-

ing a hot meal each day and should not have to supplement them as much. What I really need is 11 weeks of volunteers to become

Storyteller Café Buddies, you come sit with the children, read to them, play games with them, and you can even eat with them, if you

make a reservation in advance for a meal and pay for it. We are going to have Free Book Fridays where every child who eats on Fri-

day will be given a free book to take home (if you have new books you would like to donate to the cause, we welcome those). We are

planning to have “Career Day” Tuesdays and would like folks to volunteer for that (come in and tell the kids what you do) and on

Wednesday, we are planning to have story tellers, magicians, etc. on some afternoons after the lunch time is over. The other days we

will have books, games and buddy time. If you or your organization, church, bunko club, etc. would like to volunteer for a week or even

a day, please let me know and I’ll get you on the calendar. Looking forward to an Amazing Time with Awesome People at the STORY-

TELLER’S CAFÉ! Summer Lunch Volunteers so far:

Week 1 & 2—Fontana Church of Christ/Heavenly Hot Dogs—Week 3—La Cygne Methodist Church—Week 4—Our Lady of

Lourdes Catholic Church—Week 5—Linn Valley Community Church—Week 6—La Cygne Methodist Church—Week 7 (July

10—Need Volunteers to help)— Week 8 (July 17—Need Volunteers)—Week 9 (July 24—Need Volunteers)—Week 10 (July 31—

Need Volunteers)—Week 11(August 7—Need Volunteers). For Career Day I have Dr. Jaccard, Jada Hodgson, and have talked

with AMR about having a First Responder or Paramedic come. For free book Fridays, we need donations of new or VERY LIGHTLY

USED books.

What is expected of Mentors or Storyteller Café Buddies? Come into the library about 11:15, help serve meals to children, sit at

tables with them, encouraging them to try foods they may think they don’t like, encourage manners, read to them while they eat, visit

with them, ask questions about what their favorite things are, (like foods, books, games, etc) , play card games, checkers, etc with

them, just be an interested adult (we are looking for our mentors to be adults, but in some cases, parents may bring their chil-

dren to serve as PEER Role models for community service projects, this means they pick a table and eat with the children,

visit and talk with peers, play games and help clean up when meal is done). Contact us to volunteer.

Come Grow With Us Programs, National Library Week game night, adult coloring, Adventures with PickWits, Young Historians perform for

Linn & Miami County Retired teachers, and Ms. Veda’s Story Hour fun.

Summer Reading 2016 is just around the corner. We are including this insert in the May

newsletter, so you can look it over, get signed up for the programs that you or your children

wish to attend. Once again we will be signing up online at www.lacygnelibrary.org. This will

not be available until May 7th, but you can make your plans and when you can get in, you

can register for all the events you want.

The theme for the Summer deals with all kinds of Exercise, sports, the Olympics, races, and

activities. We will be utilizing the theme in various ways throughout the summer events. Our

wrap-up activity for the children will be a pool party, where they can “exercise” to their hearts

content, followed by a picnic in the park on July 22nd.

We are trying to offer a variety of programs to meet everyone’s needs this summer. Inside

you will see a calendar set up to show what is going on at the library every day of the week

(so far). There may be a few additions that we will add throughout the summer, but this is a

basic outline of what we will be doing all summer. Always be sure to check the website

(www.lacygnelibrary.org) upcoming events and check the calendar or the list of upcoming

events on the right hand side of the page before traveling to the library for events.

In the June Newsletter we will include a menu for Storyteller Café and instructions on

how to sign up. YOU MUST REGISTER THE DAY BEFORE TO ORDER A HOT MEAL.

We would like to take this time to thank those people who have volunteered so far to help

with that program and remind you that I still need churches, groups, etc. to adopt the last two

weeks in July and the first two weeks in August. Thanks to Fontana Church of Christ, Heav-

enly Hotdogs, La Cygne United Methodist Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church,

Linn Valley Community Church, and the PEO organization for adopting the first seven weeks

of Summer Lunch Program. I also need folks to volunteer to come to career Tuesday.

Just a reminder: We MUST stick to the age groups for the camp, art class, and story hours,

because if we allow younger children to attend it is not fair to those who have waited their

turn. Please contact us if there are questions.

ATTENTION: WE HAVE A LOT OF STUFF IN OUR LOST

AND FOUND, IF YOU OR YOUR CHILD IS MISSING SOME-

THING YOU MIGHT CHECK AND SEE IF THEY LEFT IT AT

THE LIBRARY!
