4 God loves infinite variety. God creates every human person as an unrepeatable being, each with a distinct purpose in life. Today, on the feast of John the Baptist, we praise God for creating this one-of-a-kind powerhouse prophet and preach-er. Maybe some of us share personality traits with John the Baptist. Or maybe we couldn't be more unlike him. God will use whatever gifts we have, bold or discreet. God wants sal-vation to "reach to the ends of the earth," as today's reading from Isaiah says, so we can all find a way to serve the Lord. Nothing less than the salvation of the world is at stake; we have received the "word of salvation," Saint Paul says in the Acts of the Apostles. Today's feast is a perfect time to ask the Lord what gifts we have, and how we can use them to share the love of Jesus. RIPE AND READY Teachers and coaches know how to modify their tactics to reach various learners. God does the same with us, perfectly assessing the precise intervention we need in particular situations. God sent Jesus into the world at the ripest moment in human history. Although plenty of prophets, for centuries, had foretold the coming of the Messiah, the profound honor of meeting Christ himself fell to John the Baptist. The Gospel of Matthew tells us what this blessed prophet was like: "John wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey." Out of an infinite variety of people throughout all of human history, God chose John the Baptist, in his wildness, to make us ready to meet the Son of God. LEAST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Few, if any, of us would be likely to choose John the Baptist as the one to prepare the world to meet its savior. Most of us would feel awkward around John, given his food and clothing choices, and his constant reminders to repent of our sins. John's own father, Zechariah, doubted God's providence when he learned his wife Elizabeth would give birth to John. As a punishment, the an-gel Gabriel removed Zechariah's ability to speak. Luke's Gospel reading today recounts the mo-ment when Zechariah acknowledges God's plan for his son. He supports Elizabeth--who had trust-ed in God's providence all along--and regains his voice. Zechariah rejoices in God's wisdom, praising God to all their neighbors.

John's story reminds us how our instincts often run counter to God's wisdom. Though we avoid awkward and difficult people, God chooses a locust-eating man to show us the way to Jesus. The lesson of John the Baptist is never to underestimate the power and wisdom of God. This inspires hope! We, like John, are "fearfully, wonderfully made" (Psalm 139). God has beautiful plans for each of us.

Today's Readings: Is 49:1-6; Ps 139:1-3, 13-14, 14-15; Acts 13:22-26; Lk 1:57-66, 80 Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Catholic Book of the Month - July 8th We will meet in two weeks in Hayes Center from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. to discuss A Memory for Wonders: A True Story by Mother Veronica Namoyo Le Goulard, P.C.C. Ignatius Press says, “Everything in her education, environment and training was targeted toward making her a perfect product of Marxist atheism. But God had other plans for Lucette. Emotionally neglected by her parents, Lucette became a ‘difficult child’ leading a colorful life full of mischievous adventure all the while experiencing an unutterable loneliness. But the Hound of Heaven was gently pur-suing her. At the age of three, upon witnessing the overwhelming beauty of a sun-set after a violent sirocco sand storm, she gained the unshakable certainty that this beauty was created, and that there was a God. She began to pray. That was the first link in a chain of remarkable events that grace alone could forge, which led her to embrace the faith and become a Poor Clare nun in Algiers. Disowned by her par-ents, she put all her trust in Him for whom all things are possible. Her faith was re-warded with a dramatic answer to the prayers of her heart.”

Mass Requests/Memorial Requests While we try our best to honor all Mass Intentions, all Mass requests must be completed at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance due to various printing deadlines. No Mass requests are accept-ed for November 2, 22, December 24 Vigil Masses and December 25, 2018. No weekend masses are available from now until after July 8th and there are only a limited number of weekday masses available from now until July. Suggested donations per Mass are $10. Please note that the Sanctuary Lamp and Bread & Wine requests fill-up quickly and we have a number of dates available. The suggested donation is $50 for the Bread and Wine and $20 for the Sanctuary Lamp. Please contact the rectory for availability.

We will be opening the 2018 Mass Book, the Sanctuary Lamp, and Bread & Wine memorials on July 2, 2018.

All Mass or remembrance requests can be made in person at the rectory or by complet-ing the Mass request envelope that can be found in the Narthex. Please contact the Recto-ry for availability. Please insert your payment in the envelope and drop it in the collection basket or the mail slot at the Rectory. While we try to accommodate different situations, especially with our homebound parishioners, we cannot honor mass intentions over the phone. Mass cards are available.

From the Desk of the Music Director How We Do What We Do:

Planning for Services When preparing for the weekend services, selecting the music takes up a good portion of time. The Music Ministry wishes to share this information so that we as a congregation can better understand how the musical selections help in our learning and connection to the teachings of Jesus present during each Mass. We will have an article in the bulletin for the next two weeks describing how each musical selection is picked. We hope you enjoy learning how we do what we do! Communion Hymn – The Communion Hymn also has two options.

Option 1: Often the more common of the choices, the Communion Hymn is selected from the Eucharistic section of the hymnal. The Eucharistic hymns in our hymnal help us to focus on the Mystery of what is happening before us as we celebrate the Eucharist in the Mass. There is also many Eucharistic hymns that share similar teachings to the Gospel in the verses of the hymn, while the refrain continues to remind us the im-portance of what we are experiencing through our receiving of the Communion. Option 2: A second choice is to use a hymn of reflection. This could be a song about personal reflection or about reflection on a general teaching that God has given us. A selection based on reflection is helpful to the members of the congregation as they re-ceive Communion and take time to contemplate what it means to be one with the Body of Christ.

The Music Ministry appreciated all the input given by our congregation regarding favorite mu-sical selections. Please listen for these selections throughout the summer. Thank you! Josephine Stracek [email protected] (773)-625-3369, ext. 33
