Dear students and educators,

Greetings and welcome to the 51st annual Berklee High School Jazz Festival. We are so pleased that you are here with us to experience a wonderful day highlighting jazz education and music-making by talented artists. Our participants embody the very best of high school instrumental and vocal jazz in large and small ensemble combinations, as well as solo

vocalists in our specialized Jazz Singer Showcase category.

We are very proud that our event is the largest of its kind in the United States, featuring thousands of student performers representing public and private high schools from across the country. It also represents hundreds of music educators at the top of their craft who empower and influence students with their teaching every single day. None of the students would be here without their teachers and we honor, appreciate, and acknowledge this fact.

One of our goals with the festival is to provide enriching opportunities for young artists to experience jazz from multiple angles (i.e., performing, attending clinics and exhibits, and hearing performances by other musicians). In addition, we recognize the power of bringing music teachers together to showcase the talents and efforts of their students, expand their professional networks, and inspire each other. Accordingly, throughout the day, we have scheduled time for all of these activities, and we encourage you to explore and take advantage of the festival’s many facets.

This year, we are pleased to announce that Thomas “TL” Lizotte, band director for Cape Elizabeth High School in Maine, will receive the John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year Award. Congratulations, TL, and thank you for your many outstanding contributions to jazz education.

Jazz is an American art form that provides a vehicle for personal expression and creativity that is unlike any other musical genre. When it’s your turn, we encourage you to play and sing your best song, soar with personal expression through improvisation, and feel free to take musical risks. Most importantly, we hope you thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to perform the music you prepared for us—as individuals and ensembles—and go back to your school year with newfound insights, energy, and enthusiasm.

I offer my heartfelt appreciation to the members of the extraordinary High School Jazz Festival committee, who care deeply about this event and make the mounting of a large-scale festival such as this seem effortless. I also thank the many teachers, booster groups, parents, school principals, bus drivers, and others who supported the thousands of young musicians here today. Together, we are facilitating essential musical moments in the development of young artists and creating memories that will surely last a lifetime.

Enjoy the day!

Best wishes for your musical journey,

Thomas “TL” LizotteThomas Lizotte is an accomplished music educator who has influenced the artistic lives of thousands of students. A teacher at Cape Elizabeth High School in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Lizotte has been in public education for the past 30 years. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, with degrees in music education and wind conducting. He has taught at high

schools in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, and Maine. His primary jazz influences include Dave Sporny, Dave Demsey, Paul Alberta, Don Doane, and Steve Massey. Lizotte is a regular contributor to The Instrumentalist magazine. Long active as a teacher and judge in the marching arts, he is a member of three teaching halls of fame: Massachusetts Drum Corps, Boston Crusaders, and Maine Music Educators.

Jeff CoffinSaxophonist Jeff Coffin is a globally recognized musician, composer, educator, and author. He is a member of Dave Matthews Band, a three-time Grammy Award winner, and a 14-year former member of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. He also fronts his own group, Jeff Coffin and the Mu’tet, and is the founder the Nashville Jazz Composers Collective. In 2012,

he founded Ear Up Records, which he continues to run. Coffin has played on countless studio recordings and recorded multiple solo albums. He is also a producer, engineer, performing artist for Yamaha and D’Addario, an avid photographer, and instructor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he teaches saxophone and improvisation.

Keyon HarroldKeyon Harrold was born and raised in Ferguson, Missouri, the St. Louis suburb that tore into America’s national consciousness in 2014 with the police shooting of Michael Brown and the bitter protests and riots that followed. While Ferguson looms large on Harrold’s sophomore album, The Mugician, it examines our troubled times through a far wider lens than any one tragedy.

Sweeping and cinematic, the music draws on elements of jazz, classical, rock, blues, and hip-hop to create something uniquely modern and unmistakably American. Guests including Pharoahe Monch, Gary Clark Jr., Big K.R.I.T., Guy Torry, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Robert Glasper add to the record’s eclectic nature, but it ultimately triumphs as a unified, cohesive whole, both because of Harrold’s virtuosic skill as a trumpeter and songwriter and because of his relentlessly optimistic belief in brighter days to come.

Festival HistoryFormer Berklee President Lee Eliot Berk initiated the college’s annual High School Jazz Festival (HSJF), with the first festival taking place in March of 1969. The inaugural HSJF, known as the first annual New England High School Stage Band Festival, featured 21 bands. Rush-Henrietta Central High School Band from New York, directed by Thomas Ghidiu, was the winning ensemble.

From 1971 to 1992, the festival flourished under director Norman Silver, Berklee’s former director of telecommunications. Other critical HSJF leaders include Rob Rose, former vice president for special programs; Larry Bethune, former vice president for student affairs; Larry Monroe, former vice president of international programs; Steve Lipman, former vice president of student affairs; and Rena Wade, former director of auxiliary services. Darla Hanley, dean of the Professional Education Division, joined the festival leadership team in 2013 as coproducer and director of jazz education and programs, and she became producer in 2018.

The festival planning committee has worked together for decades, facilitating the event and supporting each other and jazz education. It continues to be an impressive group of professionals who are dedicated to making the festival special. Central committee members over the years include Brad Berger, Cynthia Bethune, Elizabeth Dawe, Jennifer DeCicco, Tracy Gibbs, Maria Goldberg, Cathy Horn, Reggie Lofton, Jeff Mason, and Christina Quarles.

Since the first event, the HSJF has enjoyed annual increases in participation and offerings, moving from an event housed exclusively in Berklee’s 1140 Boylston Street building to its current location at Hynes Convention Center. Over the years, the festival schedule has included clinics and workshops featuring Berklee faculty, staff, and students, along with the Berklee City Music All-Stars and celebrity artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Peter Erskine, Tia Fuller, Greg Hopkins, Sean Jones, Abe Laboriel Sr., Ellis Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Snarky Puppy, and Phil Wilson, to name just a few. The festival grew to include expanded categories of large and small instrumental ensembles, vocal ensembles, and the most recently the Jazz Singer Showcase for solo vocalists, which began three years ago. In 2014, the festival partnered with the Jazz Education Network (JEN) to create and offer the John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year Award. Named after LaPorta, a Berklee legacy faculty member, the award is presented nationally at the JEN’s annual conference and again at the HSJF in recognition of teaching excellence in jazz. Recipients include:

Daniel Gregerman, Niles North High School, Illinois (2014)Janis Stockhouse, Bloomington High School North, Indiana (2015)Jose Antonio Diaz, Diaz Music Institute and MacArthur Senior High School, Texas (2016)Robert Klevan, Monterey Jazz Festival, California (2017)Diane Downs, Louisville Leopards, Kentucky (2018) Thomas Lizotte, Cape Elizabeth High School, Maine (2019)

In 2011, the festival added a student jazz composition competition in the name of Herb Pomeroy, another Berklee legacy faculty member. This award was created to elevate music writing and showcase talented high school students. Winning compositions have been featured in the HSJF evening showcase concerts performed by some of Berklee’s finest jazz ensembles, including the Rainbow Band and Concert Jazz Orchestra.

In 2010, the festival received a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation for the development of a website and opportunity to create resources for jazz educators and students. Other festival support includes vendors such as the Jazz Education Network (JEN), Jazz Times, Vandoren, Vic Firth Company, Zildjian, Steve Lipman Associates, Dudacus, Penella Saxophones, David French Music Co., and many others.

Over the years, thousands of high school students and music educators have benefited from the performance evaluations, clinics, workshops, and scholarship opportunities available to you today. The 2019 festival alone features has approximately 208 ensembles, 53 adjudicators, several clinicians, and more than 3,000 participating student musicians, making it the country’s largest high school jazz festival. We are making festival history today, and we look forward to what the future will bring.

Awards and ScholarshipsBerklee will present the following awards to the winning ensembles and individuals from today’s festival:

The Berklee Jazz Singer ShowcaseWe are pleased to announce our fourth annual Jazz Singer Showcase. This exciting category is offered to highlight talented solo vocalists performing jazz standards with a rhythm section, combo, or big band. Each year 10 finalists are selected in advance based on video submissions and invited to the festival for a sing-off. The finalists participate in a special vocal coaching session with Maureen McMullen, concert and event producer for External Affairs, then perform arrangements of two jazz standards written specifically for the festival by Utar Artun, an assistant professor in the Ensemble Department. The winner of this category will be announced in room 200, on the second level, following the showcase finals. The winner will receive the Rob Rose Scholarship—a full- tuition scholarship to attend Berklee’s Aspire: Five-Week Music Performance Intensive—and will perform at the awards presentation with the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, directed by Greg Hopkins, at 5:30 p.m. in at the Hynes Auditorium, on the second level.

The John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year AwardThis prestigious award is named after a legendary jazz educator who served as a distinguished professor at Berklee College of Music for more than three decades. It is offered in conjunction with the Jazz Education Network (JEN) organization, presented at the national JEN conference in Reno, Nevada, and at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival. The distinguished recipient receives a $1,500 honorarium, Berklee Online course, HSJF award package, and JEN conference registration, hotel, and travel package.
