NEW DELHI, Feb 5: Uncapped young all-rounder Pawan Negi was the lone new face, while injury-prone pacer Mohammed Shami was also named in the 15-member Indian squad as the selectors today sought to strike a balance between youth and experience for the Asia Cup and the Twenty20 World Cup. A brilliant clean sweep against Australia ensured that the core of the team was left untouched by the selectors, who opted to retain veterans like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singhand Ashish Nehra. Young players such as Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who impressed in the recent series against Australia, also found a place in the squad announced by BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur after a meeting of the selection committee here today. "This is the best combination of 15 we can think of," Chairman of the committee, Sandeep Patil, said in a press conference after the meeting. The selectors have taken some risk by picking the 25- year-old Shami who is still undergoing rehabilitation for a hamstring injury. The latest breakdown, which happened during last month's trip to Australia, came after a lengthy layoff forced by a knee injury. Shami has been picked sub- ject to fitness and should he fail to recover, India would be allowed to name a replacement. "Shami has 30 days before the World T20. We have good time in our hand to take a call on Shami. He has been one of our best bowlers. For now, I can only say that he has recovered and started bowling," he said. Among the ignored were the pace duo of Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. While Ishant has not represented India in this format since 2013, Bhuvneshwar endured a rather unimpressive run in Australia in the ODIs before injury forced him out of the T20s. Rising batsman Manish Pandey, who featured in the ODI series against Australia, was also left out of the team to be cap- tained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The Asia Cup is scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from February 24 to March 6, fol- lowed by the World T20 from March 8 to April 3 in India. Patil expressed his faith in Dhoni's leadership despite the recent mixed run. "We have no right to tell peo- ple when to retire, we have total faith in Dhoni's captaincy. He is the right person to lead in Asia Cup and World T20," Patil said. The 23-year-old Negi, who bowls left-arm spin and is a decent batsman, was rewarded for his consistent performance in the domestic circuit. Negi was also a part of the suspended Chennai Super Kings team in the IPL. That Negi will be a con- tender for the World Cup team had become obvious when he was selected for the three-match series against Sri Lanka this month. Ajinkya Rahane also found a place in the squad ahead of Pandey, who hit a match-win- ning century in the last ODI against Australia. Pandey got his break in Australia owing to an injury to Rahane and even though he made it count, the selectors opted to go with the more experienced player. "Manish Pandey performed exceptionally well in Australia, his name was also discussed," Patil said. "Harbhajan has been a part of this team. The selectors, the team management and the cap- tain have faith in Harbhajan, his record and the contribution he has made to the team," Patil explained. Patil said the team manage- ment had done its share of exper- imentations during the Australia tour. "We experimented during Australia and discussed which players would be good for replacements. For the T20 for- mat, where you won't get too much time, we discussed a few names. In the shorter format, horses for courses has worked," he said. (PTI) NEW DELHI, Feb 5: The BCCI today said it is "not looking for an Escape route" but needs to time to implement the Lodha Comm- ittee recommendations on reforms in cricket administra- tion, in comments that came a day after the Supreme Court talked tough on the issue. The Supreme Court had told the Board to fall in line and implement the sweeping reforms suggested by the Lodha Committee. Board Secretary Anurag Thakur said the BCCI has "every right to deliberate" on the pros and cons of the report before going ahead with its recommen- dations. "The BCCI is not looking for an escape route. We believe in transparency and accountability. In the last nine months, we have done things which would indicate that we are in the right direction. The Lodha committee has recom- mended many things but every member has right to look into the recommendations," BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur said in a press conference, here today. However, when asked about the logic and plausibility of some of the recommendations, Thakur's reply was: "I will reserve my comments on that." But it was clear that the top brass of BCCI is not entirely happy with the recommendations. "In 1983, when India won the World Cup, we did not have any money to pay our champion team. But now it is different. It is not that everything that has hap- pened in the last 30-40 years in the BCCI has been all wrong. So while taking any steps, that should also be taken into account," Thakur said. Thakur also said the BCCI's legal team has been looking into the matter and there will be deliberations on the findings on February 7. In fact, a Special General Meeting of state associ- ations will be summoned in the third week of February and after that a collective viewpoint will be given by the parent body. Mighty India up against high- spirited Namibia in quarters FATULLAH, Feb 5: India will aim to build on their dominant showing in the pool stages when they take on an unpredictable Namibian unit in the quarterfinals of the ICC U -19 World Cup here tomor- row. India went about their job in clinical fashion beating Ireland, New Zealand and Nepal by big margins in Group D. However, they can't afford to take their quarterfinal oppo- nents likely as Namibia head into the knock-out phase after showing the exit door to defending champions South Africa. In other matches, the African nation got the better of Scotland before losing their final league game against Bangladesh to finish second in Group A behind the hosts. On paper, India possess a formidable unit and should have little difficulty in getting past Namibia. India captain Ishan Kishan would be pleased to get some runs under his belt in the last game against Nepal after fail- ing in the previous two innings. He smashed a 40-ball 52 against Nepal in the company of fellow opener Rishabh Pant, who looks to be in ominous touch. Pant enabled an India win in a canter after hammer- ing 78 off 24 balls against the team from the Himalayan nation. The opposition will also have to worry about Sarfaraz Khan, who goes into game at the back of two fifties in three games. Madhya Pradesh-born pacer Avesh Khan has been the stand- out bowler for India with nine wickets at an average of 10.00 and economy rate of 3.21. Namibians, on other hand, have nothing to lose tomorrow and they can go out and play fearless cricket against their fancied opponents. They will be high confi- dence after a sensational win against South Africa, effective- ly sending them into thequar- ters. But they would want to put their sorry outing in the last game behind. Bangladesh bull- dozed Namibia on Tuesday after dismissing them for 65, eventually winning by 8 wick- ets. India went about their job inclinical fashion beating Ireland,New Zealand and Nepal by bigmargins in Group D.

However, they can't affordto take their quarterfinal oppo-nents likely as Namibia headinto the knock-out phase aftershowing the exit door todefending champions SouthAfrica.

In other matches, theAfrican nation got the better ofScotland before losing theirfinal league game againstBangladesh to finish second inGroup A behind the hosts.

On paper, India possess aformidable unit and shouldhave little difficulty in gettingpast Namibia.

India captain Ishan Kishanwould be pleased to get someruns under his belt in the lastgame against Nepal after fail-ing in the previous two innings.

He smashed a 40-ball 52against Nepal in the companyof fellow opener Rishabh Pant,

who looks to be in ominoustouch. Pant enabled an Indiawin in a canter after hammer-ing 78 off 24 balls against theteam from the Himalayannation.

The opposition will also

have to worry about SarfarazKhan, who goes into game atthe back of two fifties in threegames.

Madhya Pradesh-born pacerAvesh Khan has been the stand-out bowler for India with ninewickets at an average of 10.00and economy rate of 3.21.

Namibians, on other hand, have nothing to lose tomorrowand they can go out and playfearless cricket against theirfancied opponents.

They will be high confi-dence after a sensational winagainst South Africa, effective-ly sending them into thequar-ters. But they would want to puttheir sorry outing in the lastgame behind. Bangladesh bull-dozed Namibia on Tuesdayafter dismissing them for 65,eventually winning by 8 wick-ets.
