Welcome to our Faithful Parishioners and
All Those who may be ‘Just Visiting’
Jesus washed the feet of his apostles at the Last Supper as a sign of loving service, instructing them “as I have done this to you so must you do for one another.” We as a family of faith strive to live this commandment of love in doing all that we can to welcome you as we invite you to be an active member of this community. Welcome new parishioners! If you are new to our parish, I invite you to introduce yourself to me or any of the other priests after Sunday Mass, or when you come into the rectory to register. Even though we are a large parish, we make every effort to come to know you and your family personally so that we may be better able to serve you. So please be sure to say hello! -Fr. Ken

Fr. Ken’s Corner
Dear Sisters and Brothers of Saint Rose of Lima Parish, “Do onto others as you would have others do onto you.” We all should know this as the ‘Golden Rule.’ And yet, any number of recent items in the news serve to remind us that this simple dictum from Jesus needs to be re-emphasized from time to time, and I think now is as good a time as any to do so. Recently, I saw a story that caught my attention amid all the other items that make me shake my head in wonder and more than a little disbelief. It seems that a little boy held the door open for a little girl about his own age. One of the onlookers said, “Oh, look how cute. I wonder if he has a crush on her.” Another said in admiration, “Isn’t he so well trained by his parents. We should have more young gentlemen like him.” And a third person commented, “It seems to me that male chauvinism is alive and well.” Such a trivial event, something that probably will have no great importance in the grand scheme of life and yet, an action seen so very differently by three people, each with a very specific opinion of what the action meant to them. The point of sharing this story with you is that the little boy learned in bible class a few days previously the instruction by Jesus on the ‘Golden Rule.’ His kindness at that moment had nothing to do with being motivated to act for a pretty girl. We wouldn’t know how his parents raised him, but hopefully they taught him to be kind and considerate. Nor could we know the reasons behind the third comment. And yet, we can see from this incident how larger events can be interpreted and misinterpreted by any number of people. Three people, three opinions and three reactions. Just three people saw what was occurring and had thoughts about the little boy – and to one degree or another, they were all wrong. Now take what an entire nation sees or thinks it sees, what an entire nation knows or thinks it knows and throw in the emotionalism of many of the events of the past two months, especially those more recently. Would that the ‘Golden Rule” serve as a guide, an inspiration and even a rule of law in this land that considers itself a Christian Nation, for both Christians and non-Christians alike! Jesus says, “Love your enemies; pray for your persecutors; turn the other cheek.” Many would say that you can’t run a government on the good intentions from the scriptures; that it hasn’t been possible from the time that Jesus spoke those words. It may seem naïve, but wouldn’t the living out of the “Golden Rule” go a long way in showing respect for one another on every level? And even if you couldn’t run an entire country under this provision, why couldn’t we begin this process in our own families? Why can’t this be the way that you and I interact with our friends and neighbors? If we desire peace, if we desire justice, if we truly desire equality between genders and races and cultures, then where else can we start but the ‘Golden Rule?’ If we can sing, “Let there be peace on earth and LET IT BEGIN WITH ME,” doesn’t that make “DO ONTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE OTHERS DO ONTO YOU” as the starting place? No sane or rational person wants to be hurt. No sane or rational personal wants to be discriminated against. Even those who are rich and powerful would say they wouldn’t want to be targeted just because of their wealth. So, let’s all start being like the little boy in the story, doing something nice for another person because someone else might do something nice for us. If altruism doesn’t motivate us - maybe self-interest will.

Background Screening Update The Office for the Protection of Children and Young People: The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People (The Charter) promulgated by the Bishops of the United States in 2002 outlines specific practices and guidelines providing standards of safety in parishes and dioceses throughout the United States. As directed in The Charter, the Diocese of Rockville Centre requires all employees, clergy, and volunteers to complete three requirements within thirty days of employment or volunteering:
Attend Protecting God’s Children Program (Virtus) Sign the Codes of Conduct; Complete a background screen application. The Diocese requires all those who remain in active ministry be rescreened at 5 yr. intervals.
A Word on Background Screening of Volunteers: The Office for the Protection of Children and Young People (OFPCYP) has streamlined the volunteer application process enabling volunteers to complete the three safe environment requirements in one step. Individuals wishing to volunteer in a parish or school:
Register to attend a Protecting God’s Children class and create a Virtus account on the Virtus website: www.Virtus.org Electronically acknowledge the Diocesan Code of Conduct- provided during the Virtus registration
process. Follow the instructions to complete the Sterling Volunteers background screening application offered
during the Virtus registration process. Active Volunteers: If you are active in a parish ministry, have already attended Virtus and have been background screened you may be at – or beyond- the 5yr. rescreening requirement. If this is the case, you will receive an email from Sterling Volunteers, asking you to complete the background screening application on-line. You may access the background screening application by following the prompt in the email or logging into your Virtus account. Please be aware—this is not a scam nor has your e-mail been hacked. The OFPCYP has been working with your parish to update the Safe Environment records and noted it is time for you to be rescreened. You may also be prompted to electronically re-sign the Code of Conduct when you log into your Virtus account. Edit Your Virtus Account: To access your Virtus account: www.Virtus.org You will need your Username and Password. If you need assistance, please contact Virtus: 1-888-847-8870 or [email protected]. Once in your account, review your account information, particularly your e-mail address. If your account requires updating, please hit the TOOLBOX tab at the top of the screen. On the left side of your screen in the green column click “Update My Account” You will be able to make the necessary changes—please remember to hit the SAVE button at the bottom of the screen.

Thank you to all who continue to serve in a ministry during these extremely challenging days.
