Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 26th Annual Holiday at the Pops Concert! This year has been one of upheaval and uncertainty for so many people. So, we are indeed fortunate to be able to keep this holiday tradition going in the form of a live stream for our audience. For many, this event signifies the beginning of the holiday season.
You are in for a real gift this evening. The LCSO is one of the few orchestras in the country making spirits bright this season. We would like to thank our Conductor, Chuck Steck, for overcoming some barriers to making this happen. We would also like to thank our guests Cripple Creek for always lighting up our evening. A special addition will be our six Student Apprentices appearing on the concert this evening. Thanks as well goes to our dedicated committee members who have given selflessly of their time and talent. Also, a huge thank you goes to our generous sponsors who have shown their unwavering support for this event.
We hope you enjoy this evening of holiday music. Please share your knowledge of this event with family, friends and colleagues all over the world as the Holiday at the Pops concert will be available for viewing throughout the holiday season.

CHARLES STECKCharles Steck ascended to the position of Interim Music Director and Conductor in 2018. His education includes the degrees Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music from Valparaiso University, focusing on trumpet and music education. He has done advanced study at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and VanderCook College of Music.
Mr. Steck has been Instructor of Trumpet at Valparaiso University since 1990, teaching studio trumpet and trumpet choir. He also teaches students at Lakeshore High school and Portage High School, as well as having a studio at his home in La Porte. He was a fixture at La Porte High School for 22 years in the Music Department, directing bands, jazz bands, and the Men’s Chorus.
Chuck continues to perform as a trumpeter with the St. Joseph (Michigan) Municipal Band, where he has been featured as a trumpet and vocal soloist on numerous occasions. He has serves as Principal Trumpet of the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra and is a long-time trumpeter and vocalist with the legendary Tom Milo Big Band. In addition, he performs with the North American Brass Company, a brass quintet which performs throughout the Michiana region.
In 2013, after a lengthy career as principal trumpet, Mr. Steck became the conductor and music director of the historic La Porte City Band, the oldest continuous municipal band in the State of Indiana.
In addition to Interim Music Director, Mr. Steck serves as the Principal Trumpet of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 1980. He first joined the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra when he was in high school, during the orchestra’s very first season.

Cripple Creek had their beginnings with Mitch Marhanka and Lou Voelker playing local open mic nights. They became a trio in 1995 when David Applegarth joined the group. John Langford arrived five years later and they have been together ever since. Steve Eyrick acts as the sound man and occasionally adds vocals, including the Holiday Pops. Cripple Creek enjoys singing country and gospel music and occasionally wanders into old time rock and roll. They all live in the Door Village area of La Porte County. Practices are held on Mitch’s front porch with the audience being a herd of dairy heifers. Each member is active in church music at Door Village UMC where Mitch is the music director. David’s musical background is piano and vocal music and Lou’s is guitar and vocals. Both David and Lou are Alumni of the Purdue Glee Club. Mitch’s musical background includes piano, tuba, bass guitar, and vocal music. John plays the trumpet with time spent in the Purdue and Notre Dame Jazz Bands. Steve participated in the Valparaiso University Chapel Choir, Community Chorus, church choirs and ran sound at Valparaiso University and now for Cripple Creek. Cripple Creek would like to thank the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte for the privilege of sharing the celebration of Christ’s birth with our community through music.

Jacob Keen is a trumpet player from Knox High School who has been an active member in the school’s fine arts program for nearly 7 years. Since the start of his musical career, Jacob has performed multiple solos at ISSMA Solo & Ensemble, all of which have received gold ratings. He has also been selected to perform with the Indiana All-State Band for two consecutive years. With his current successes in the music world, Jacob plans to continue his study of music in college next fall with a major in music education to pursue his wishes of becoming a music educator.
JACOB KEEN
A Kentucky native, Tim is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville. His singing career has included over 170 solo appearances with orchestras from the Buffalo, NY Philharmonic to the Santa Barbara, CA Symphony. Tim’s “other life” is that of an Arts Administrator with positions such as Executive Director of The Louisville Orchestra, Vice-President of the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and Director of Performing Arts with the Jefferson County Public School System. After administratively retiring to NW Indiana, retirement did not last long for Tim as he is now the Executive Director of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra.
