STATEMENT OF NEED

Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) is the most aggressive form of breast cancer. IBC is frequently misdiagnosed as an infection and valuable time may be wasted in efforts to correctly diagnose IBC. There is rarely a lump and usually cannot be detected on ultrasounds; mammograms are often painful and difficult for these patients. It is very important to distinguish IBC from other types of breast cancer because there are major differences in its symptoms, prognosis, and treatment. Although IBC is uncommon, the aggressive nature necessitates early diagnosis to provide optimum care for these patients.

The International Inflammatory Breast Cancer Conference is designed as a forum for the global IBC community of doctors and researchers to address the gaps in our understanding of the etiological factors, molecular phenotypes and therapeutic options for patients with IBC. Clinicians are uncertain about the most appropriate course of management for these patients, yet timing is critical. The goals of the 3rd International Inflammatory Breast Cancer Conference are to help physicians translate research findings into more effective prevention, improved risk identification, more consistent criteria that results in earlier diagnosis and improved management of patients with IBC so that more women can be diagnosed earlier and live longer with better quality of life than in the past. The educational planning committees seek to address barriers that hinder patients from participating in clinical trials. In addition, the planning committees want to address barriers to getting patients onto clinical trials. Another goal is to develop consensus guidelines and provide strategies to help physicians integrate findings into practice with improved patient outcomes. Multiple educational methods, including Lectures, Question-and-Answer Sessions, Roundtable Discussions, Case Scenarios and Posters, will be used to accommodate individual learning styles.

OBJECTIVES

After completing this activity, learners should be able to:1. Recognize the potential effect of environmental factors,

including rural settings, bacteria and virus, on development of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) in order to determine potential ways to prevent occurrence of IBC and counsel patients about these epidemiologic findings.

2. Define molecular signatures or specific biomarker expression that separate IBC from other forms of breast cancer and integrate these into management of these patients to improve diagnosis, select better treatments that will affect outcomes, reduce rate of recurrence and improve survival rates.

3. Identify patients with IBC and high risk of recurrence so that appropriate monitoring and screening strategies can be implemented.

4. Translate research findings into clinical practice to improve the early diagnosis and treatment of patients with IBC and improve patient access to early diagnosis and treatment.

5. Integrate into clinical practice consensus guidelines for identifying risk factors, screening, diagnosing and treating patients at risk for IBC or those presenting with the disease.

6. Discuss current diagnostic guidelines with radiologists and pathologists to improve the screening and diagnosis of those with suspected or confirmed IBC.

7. Analyze new developments in IBC research and currently available clinical trials and when clinically relevant, include this information in discussions with patients to foster accrual to clinical trials.

8. Translate new knowledge about the risk factors, screening, diagnosis and treatment of IBC to patients in terms that patients can understand.

9. Increase dialogue between physicians and researchers to identify relevant areas that need to be translated from bench to bedside.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis program is designed for medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, fellows, residents, physician assistants, advanced practice clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals involved in the management of patients with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC); Researchers with a research interest in IBC; and Patient Advocates for IBC. Gynecologists, family and general physicians and internists who manage patients with IBC may find the program beneficial.
