Hudson went five strong innings, allow- ing two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one. Amaya knocked in a run in the first and homered to center in the third, but Jodd Carter’s two-run, go-ahead home run in the seventh gave the Hillcats the lead for good. Lynchburg added on a run in the eighth and one more in the ninth to pace a 6-3 win. MY OH AMAYA Miguel Amaya, who is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Cubs organizaon by Baseball America and No. 1 by MLB. com, has started off the season on a hot streak. In his first two games, the Pelicans backstop is 3-for-7 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. Out of the eight runs the Birds have put up on the board so far this season, the 20-year-old has accounted for six of them (four RBIs and two runs). He has also pegged two runners aempng to steal in five aempts so far. In 2018 with Low-A South Bend, Amaya hit .256/.349/.403 in 116 games while hing 21 doubles, 12 home runs and knocking in 52. WE’RE BRINGING HUDDY BACK Bryan Hudson was brilliant on the mound on Friday for the Pelicans. The leſt hander struggled with his command a year ago, leading all Pelicans starters with a 11.6 percent walk rate (the MLB average is around 8.5 percent). In game two of the series, he showed off the command, just walking one baer in five innings while striking out six. Though he sur- rendered two runs on seven hits, Hudson aacked baers, throwing 61 percent (51-of-84) of his pitches for strikes. BRINGING IN THE BIG GUNS A new year means many new players in the Pelicans’ clubhouse, and this year, there are some big-me prospects on the squad. The Opening Day roster features six top pros- pects (according to the Cubs Top 30 Prospect Rankings from Baseball America). Catcher Miguel Amaya (No. 2 in Baseball America, No. 1 on MLB.com) leads the pack while shortstop Aramis Ademan (No. 10 in Baseball America, No. 6 on MLB. com) isn’t far behind as he returns for his second year in Myrtle Beach. RHP Paul Richan (No. 7 in Baseball America, No. 18 on MLB.com) and RHP Alex Lange (No. 14 in Baseball America, No. 12 on MLB.com) are the two prospects on the bump for the Birds. While they don’t come in on MLB.com, ouielders D.J. Wilson (No. 25 in Baseball America) and Jimmy Herron (No. 27 in Baseball America) round out the list for Myrtle Beach. FAMILIAR FACES IN THE SAME PLACES The Birds welcome in 10 holdovers from prior years back to Myrtle Beach for Opening Day. LHP Ryan Kellogg is back for his third season on the Grand Strand, while infielder Carlos Sepulveda returns aſter spending 28 games in Myrtle Beach in 2017 and missing the 2018 season with a right arm injury. On the mound, starters Alex Lange and Bryan Hudson are in baby blue again and relievers Kellogg and Tyler Peyton give some depth to a young bullpen. On the infield, Wladimir Galindo, Aramis Ademan and Yeiler Peguero are all back, while the ouield features a pair of recognizable faces in Kevonte Mitchell and D.J. Wilson. WELCOME TO THE STEVE LERUD SHOW Aſter Buddy Bailey held the skipper role for the Birds over the last three seasons, Steve Lerud takes over at the helm in 2019. The new manager offers an interesng juxtaposion from the old, as Bailey is the acve winningest manager in the MiLB, while Lerud enters just his second season manag- ing in the minors. Though his first season with short season Low A Eugene ended in a 31-45 (.408) regular season in 2018, the Emeralds blasted through postseason play to win the Northwest League Championship on a walk-off balk. The 34-year-old played in the minor leagues for 13 seasons as a catcher and played nine games for the Phillies between 2012 and 2013. Along the way, he played in Lynchburg in 2007 and 2008. PELICAN POINTS Aſter starng the 2018 season 0-3, this is the first me in recorded club history (since 2005) that the Pelicans have begun back-to-back seasons at 0-2. The 2014 Pelicans went 0-4 to begin the year, but won their next seven games...The bullpen has struggled in the first two contests, pitching to a 9.31 ERA over 9.2 innings...Since joining with Chicago in 2015, the Birds are 1-1-2 in the Opening Series, with a total record of 8-10 against their first opponent in the opening lt. ABOUT PAUL

-Selected in the 2018 draft in the Compensation B second round out of University of San Diego, the pick the Cubs received when relief pitcher Wade Davis left in free agency. The Cubs’ other 2018 compensation pick, which they earned when Jake Arrieta left for the Phillies, was used on Cole Roederer. Roederer was selected out of Hart High School in southern California, the same school that Richan prepped at. Hart has produced a plethera of talent in the last few years, particularly on the mound, including Tyler Glasnow, Trevor Bauer, James Shields, Kevin Millar and Cubs Mike Montgomery (pitcher) and Chris Valaika (coach).

-Cubs star Kris Bryant also went to San Diego. The 2018 draft marked the sixth-straight season a Torero was selected in the third round or higher (Bryant in 2013, Conner Joe in 2014 and Kyle Holder in 2015).

-Ranked as the Cubs’ No. 7 prospect by Baseball America and No. 18 by MLB.com.

-Richan planned to have friends and family members over to his house to watch the second day of the draft, expecting to be selected between the fourth and sixth rounds. Instead, he was selected with the last pick in the first day. Only his mother and girlfriend were with him when he received the phone call. “I was watching the draft on TV, and it was kind of hectic,” Richan to the San Diego Union-Tribune. “My advisor called me like a minute before the pick happened. He asked if I would take that (slot) money. I agreed to it. Within 30 seconds my name popped up on the board, and I was extremely excited.”

-For San Diego in three seasons, he went 10-9 with a 4.53 ERA while striking out 194 in 189.2 innings to just 44 walks. His senior season, Richan whiffed 101 batters in 89.2 innings while just issuing 13 free passes (10.14 K/9 and 1.30 BB/9).

-Also recruited by UCLA, CS Bakersfield, Long Beach State, CS Northridge and West Virginia.

2019 SEASON

2018 SEASON

-Richan pitched well coming out of the draft, but was stopped short of pitching in the postseason due to an innings limit.

-His impeccable controlled carried into his professional debut, owning a 4.4 percent walk rate (t-11th in the NWL among those with at least 20 IP) while sporting an excellent 27.4 percent strikeout rate.

-Richan did not allow a run over five straight starts from July 26 to August 16. Over that stretch, he threw 13 innings, striking out 15 and walking three while surrendering just four hits.

OTHER NOTES- As a junior at Hart HS, went 8-1 with a 2.57 ERA while tossing five complete games and recorded 63 strikeouts.

-As a senior, he went 5-2 with a 1.65 ERA and 71 strikeouts.

-Garnered two All-League 1st Team selections his jr and sr years while being named an All-State honorable mention as a senior.
