Saturday 18th December, 2010 15 Sri Lanka Masters ath- letes brought home 187 medals, including 49 gold 63 silver and 75 bronze from the 16th Asian Masters’ Athletics Championship which concluded on 12 Dec. at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is by far the largest medal haul by any Sri Lankan team to date, sur- passing the Sri Lanka Masters Athletes feat of 155 medals at the 14th Asian Championship, held in Bangalore, India in 2006. Sri Lanka finished third behind India and Japan in the medal tally ahead of Chinese Taipei, China, Thailand and hosts Malaysia. A record number of 1700 athletes vied for hon- ours from 18 Asian coun- tries in the six day event. Our athletes not only brought medals home, they established nine new Asian Masters Championship records at the meet. Barring the record created by the quartet in the 4x400m relay (men 55 age group) the rest of the records came from athletes in the 35 age group category. They were G. N. Karunathilaka in the 800m and 3000m steeplechase, S. Chandrasena in the 400m, W. A. S. P. Chandrapala 5000m, Jude Siriwardhana long jump, Roshan Samarasingha 400m hurdles and Rekha Edirisinghe in the 2000m steeplechace. Sergey Polikarpov (Kazakhstan) was adjudged the Best Athlete of the Meet for his performance of 15:31.03s in the 5000m M50 age group. Sri Lankans S. Chandrasena for his per- formance of 51.14s in the 400m in the M35 group, G. N. Karunathilaka 2:01.36s in the 800m and W. A. S. P. Chandrapala, 15:53.52s in the 5000m were among the athletes short listed for the Best Performance Title. The two teams, St. Peter’s and Mahanama secured their quarter-final berths beating Ananda and St. Sebastian’s Colleges respectively in their pre- quarter-finals. “The teams secured their knockout stage positions according to the points they gained during the second round. And their second round positions were deter- mined according to the points they aggregated dur- ing the first round. It is a coincidence that these two teams meet in the quarter finals,” said Manjula Vass, the Under-13 Tournament Secretary of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association. While St. Peter’s meet Mahanama at Shalika Grounds on Wednesday, Royal College, Panadura, will encounter Nalanda College in their quarter final at Ananda College Grounds, on Tuesday. Richmond College who beat Dharmasoka will meet Thurstan College at Royal College, Junior Grounds on Tuesday, while St. Joseph’s College will clash with Bandaranaike College, Gampaha at Shalika Ground on Tuesday. SILVA ‘The Inter-school Tennis 10s Championship’ (in Red and Orange ball categories) for school kids between the ages of 6 and 8 was held on December 15 and 16 at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association, Colombo. Under this new concept, introduced by the ITF, the SLTA conducted the first ‘Tennis 10s’ with the partici- pation of school kids from about ten (10) districts which are involved in the ongoing Mini Tennis programme. There were 23 teams and over 200 players who had entered the event represent- ing a lot of outstation schools. Forty players had come from Jaffna alone. The ‘Tennis 10s’ programme is played with modified tennis equipments with players using two types of balls, according to their playing standards. The SLTA says they will conduct ‘Tennis 10s’ champi- onship island-wide next year to promote tennis in far off places through outstation schools. The chief guest of last Sunday’s prize distribution was Prem Thumpi, CEO, ICIC Bank. The badminton nationals were in danger of being postponed a few days back due to protests by parents whose players were expected to contest the tournament. These parents were requesting for a postponements on the grounds that their children couldn’t prepare for the tournament because they sat for the 2010 Ordinary Level Examination (O’ Levels).
