SATS What you need to know and
how you can help

∗ There are no more national curriculum levels. i.e. Level 4 and 5 etc.
∗ Children’s marks will be used in conjunction with teacher assessments to give a broader picture on their attainment.
∗ Each child will receive a ‘raw score’ which will be the actual amount of marks they received.
∗ There will also be a scaled score which is the national average.

∗ There will be 3 Maths papers ∗ Paper 1- Arithmetic, will last for a duration
of 30 minutes ∗ Paper 2 and 3- Reasoning, each will last for
40 minutes ∗ These papers will include True or False,
Multiple Choice, Constrained and unconstrained questions.

∗ Consists of two parts: ∗ aural spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes ∗ grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers,
lasting 45 minutes ∗ The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-
types of questions: ∗ Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the
sentence below’ ∗ Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the
sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’

∗ The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text
∗ The test will last for 1 hour ∗ There will be a selection of question types, including: ∗ Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the
order in which they happen in the story’ ∗ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ ∗ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what

∗ Kit them out- pens, compasses and highlighters etc. ∗ Plan treats in the week etc. ∗ Encourage them to attend school revision classes ∗ Practice timing them to answer questions so they get used to
completing the questions in a specific amount of time. ‘It’s important to emphasise the necessity of going back to check over work in a test and to know when to leave a question and move on if it’s too difficult’
∗ Liaise with your child's teacher to earmark any particular problems they may have
