5G is more than just cellular, it is wireless - a combination of new technology working hand-in-hand with existing technology

Today satellite already delivers mobile backhaul, push data services, linear and non-linear TV, converged media, broadband services and many M2M services that will be part of the 5G ecosystem

In a hyper-connected world of Smart Cities, Internet of Things and Connected Transport Systems the need for backup in case of failure increases - satellite adds vital redundancy to territorial networks, enhancing the resilience of the overall 5G network

Satellites will make use of all core satellite bands when delivering current and planned next generation 5G services

Sustainable & Viable Spectrum Access for all components of the 5G ecosystem

5G will require large blocks of contiguous spectrum

5G will require > 1GHz per carrier on a globally harmonised basis

5G solutions can leverage existing IMT spectrum before evolving into new spectrum. These requirements can be accommodated in the frequency bands confirmed or identified for potential use by IMT during WRC-15

Billions of dollars have beeninvested in satellite systemsoperating in C-band, Ku band, and Ka-band (17.7-20.2 GHz/27.5 -30 GHz)

Advanced satellite networks will be required to support ubiquitous availability of 5G services

Multiple GHz of contiguousspectrum are potentially availablein the bands identified for ITU-Rstudies in view of WRC 19

Fixed satellite services (FSS) are also developing into other bands, especially Q/V band (37.5-51.5 GHz)

Bands that are harmonised internationally are essential for both satellite applications and for terrestrial 5G

5G will benefit from the integration and/or interoperability with innovative satellite broadband and media services. Existing and new bands for satellite services are therefore essential to achieve the vision of 5G

2015Over 60 GEO and non GEO civil Ka band systems are in operation today, including High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems integrating Ku and Ka bands

2015 - 2020The next 5 years will see a further 25 GEO and more non GEO systems being launched

2020There will be over 100 GEO HTS systems and several non GEO HTS systems delivering Terabits of connectivity in Ku/Ka bands worldwide

Delivering 5G

Resilience and ubiquity must be key features of the 5G eco-system and are enabled by satellite.

The 5G eco-system requires the inclusion of satellite connectivity in order to ensure that the “Internet of everywhere”, at the heart of 5G service development, enables the connection of all people and all things no matter where they are.
