Rotary VAR Controller Capabilities:

1. Provides fast vector controlled reactive powergeneration and absorption for distribution bus voltage regulation and for weak grid stabilization.

2. Reduces bus voltage harmonic distortion and voltage unbalance through low impedance negative sequence and asynchronous voltage components.

Rotary VAR Plus Controller Additional Capability:

3. Extracts or absorbs real power WATTs from its own inertia and directly coupled flywheel(s).

4. Real and reactive power exchanges are indepedentlycontrolled through the rotor excitation.

Rotary VAR Controller Advantages:

1. Low cost, rugged wound rotor induction machine (WRIM) connects directly to the distribution bus up to 13.8kV, through step up transformer for higher system voltages.

2. Fractionally, 10 – 15%, rated power electronicsfor rotor variable frequency excitation, isolated from the MV bus through induction machine stator-to-rotor gap.

3. Large overload ( 300% minimum) capabilitycombined with flywheel energy storage capability provides for distribution bus voltage dip compensation.
