Each year, the requirements and recommendations around SAT Subject

Tests (SAT II s for the many sti l l using the old College Board name) grow

more diverse. [See Adam Ingersoll s post on Subject Test ins-and-outs to

get a ful l perspective on Subject Test decision-making.] Colleges may find

Subject Tests helpful , but they are not always in agreement about how the

exams are helpful . The general trend is toward more f lexib le requirements.

In fact , I cannot think of a s ingle example in the last several years where

requirements have been t ightened. Sti l l , the most competit ive col leges in

the country tend to be found on this l ist and skew toward the required

end of the spectrum.

Test Enhancement

Many colleges, in the words of Carleton College, feel that SAT Subject

Tests usually enhance a candidates credentials. It s the usually part

that can make parents and students queasy. Do you want my scores or

not? Am I one of the unusual students who could unenhance [sic] my

chances for admission?

Safer, Saner, and Sooner

ClassifyingColleges Using SAT Subject Tests in the 2014-2015 Admission

Process

I have chosen to present the l ist of Subject Test consuming schools

alphabetical ly, because the categories have a good deal of nuance. I know

how much people l ike categories, so I ve provided a shorthand label for

each col lege, more complete information about its policy , and, of course, a

l ink directly to the part of the col legeswebsite dealing with standardized

testing. Below the alphabetical set , I l l provide a sort for the more

categorical ly minded.

Required

Colleges l isted as Required have Subject Test polic ies that require al l

or most students to submit scores. In almost al l cases, this means 2

Subject Tests in different subjects . A majority of the col leges in this

grouping actually al low for the ACT (usually, with Writing) to substitute

for the SAT Reasoning (the SAT) and SAT Subject Tests . We have left

these col leges labeled Required, s ince SAT submitters wil l need to take

Subject Tests . A checkmark is included to indicate these ACT friendly

policies . An applicant should always ask whether an ACT or the SAT

Combo Pack better reflects his or her capabil it ies (and should keep the

qualif ications of other applicants f irmly in mind.) . Needless to say, an

applicant should be making these decisions with input from parents ,

counselors , and test experts .

Recommended

Colleges l isted as Recommended range from those schools who f ind it

useful for students to submit SAT Subject Test scores to those who fal l

just short of Required (Georgetown and Stanford come to mind).

Considered

Colleges l isted as Considered are those who view Subject Tests as

optional supplemental information, without any actual

recommendation. We only l ist col leges that specif ical ly mention Subject

Tests (or SAT II s as many admission s ites sti l l refer to them).

Alternative

Colleges l isted as Alternative are the small but growing number of

schools that al low an applicant to submit Subject Test scores in l ieu of

SAT and ACT scores.

About Art SawyerArt graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University,

where he was the top-ranked l iberal arts student in his c lass .

Art pioneered the one-on-one approach to test prep in

California in 1989 and co-founded Compass Education Group
