Dear Parents
At our assembly last week we bid farewell to the Matrics who were our 2012 Grade 7 class. It was delightful to have these beautiful, confident young women in our midst again.
I reminded the girls to:
make the most of all the opportunities that came their way
learn from their mistakes
use passion and compassion abundantly
chase their goals and dreams
live up to their commitments
serve others before themselves
Our Grade 4 & 5 vocal ensemble sang the song Heroes to the Matrics.
The Grade 1s also presented each Matric with a pink rose, a pink Relate
bracelet and a card which had a verse from the Bible for women to
signify their pink Herschel blood. We wish our Matric class of 2017 everything
of the best as they prepare to write their upcoming final examinations. I spoke to
the girls about our new theme for the term, ‘Growth’. I encouraged the girls to
develop a growth mindset. This could be done by embracing challenges and seeing
effort as the path to mastery. I encouraged the girls to keep going when things got
tough. I will continue to refer to and develop this theme as the term progresses.
In assembly this week, Rev Sue Taylor read from Proverbs 4 v 23 which says: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Rev Taylor told the girls that when the Bible talks here about our heart, it
means our soul or our inner being, that which makes us precious. We are
told to guard it carefully. The Bible tells us that our heart is extremely
valuable to God as he loves us so much. Another reason we are told to
protect our heart is because everything flows from it. The Bible says that
“the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” in other words, “What you
say flows from what is in your heart.” (Luke 6:45) Rev Taylor encouraged
the girls to look at the good before them. We need to guard our hearts,
by keeping our eyes and ears fixed on what is good – and we do this, not
to earn God’s love but because God loves us.

Our Junior Marimba Band performed at our
assembly on Tuesday morning setting the tone

the hymn, Amazing Grace. Thank you girls for
making it extra special!

The Pre-prep girls have been eagerly watching the life cycle of silkworms
and have enjoyed having free time for close observations.
Our warm congratulations to Jenni Brock on
the safe arrival of her grandson, Richard Paul,
sister to Ava. Jenni is now the rather proud
grandmother of 4 grandchildren!
On Tuesday, the Grade 7s visited the Pre-Nursery Classes to spend time reading to the girls. I am not sure who enjoyed the experience more as
the girls loved their one-on-one time together.
On Friday, 13 October the Pre-Prep girls had their own Big Walk at Keurboom Park. It was a beautiful morning, the girls all managed well
and they enjoyed a picnic and play in the park afterwards.
On Wednesday, the Cuddly Kittens and Little Lambs completed this year’s Act of Kindness by handing over gift packs to Dr Gill, head of
paediatrics at Victoria Hospital. The girls brought a well-loved soft toy and book from home to donate. Parents supplied the gift bag for the girls
to decorate as well as a box of crayons and a colouring-in book. Dr Gill explained how this gift of kindness will make a difference in the lives of
the children in her ward.
General Knowledge
Foundation Phase
The Grade 3s celebrated World Maths Day, by spending the morning
visiting different Maths activity stations. The girls thoroughly enjoyed
themselves, physically building, playing and creating things that related
to concepts we have been looking at this year.
Our General Knowledge team participated in the final Interschool
General Knowledge Quiz for the year held at SACS on Wednesday
evening. We are very proud of our team as only the top ten schools
from the previous rounds were invited to participate. The girls were
faced with some challenging questions and acquitted themselves very
well to share fifth place with The Grove and Golden Grove.
Congratulations to our team!

Weekly Find The Flamingoes Challenge
“Better When I’m Dancing”
Our PA and the Carnival Committee launched the new and exciting logo for Carnival at assembly this week. I am
sure the ‘pink flamingoes’ will start to become a feature around the Prep in the forthcoming weeks. The girls
can’t wait to be the first to find the hidden flamingoes before next Tuesday. I have no doubt that Carnival is going
to be an amazing event this year with many new and exciting items. The Grade 7s showed the school the new
Flash Mob and we will continue to practise this in the coming weeks. The planning and organisation behind the
scenes is at a frenetic pace at the moment. I am so appreciative of all the time and energy that is put in by
parents. Thank you! I look forward to seeing you all there on Friday, 17 November. Please diarise this important
Prep School event.
Have a truly wonderful weekend. The advice below will be shared with the girls at assembly next week.
Warm regards
Mrs Belinda Heidmann
Head of Preparatory
