    UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said

climate changeis a Humanitarian issue, a

Development issue, and an issue of Security and Stability.

"Planet Earth is our shared island, let us join forces to protect it.

In Berlin speech, President Obama said, "This is the global threat of our time."

    We can control climate change

Climate Change is a global problem, and yet each

one of us has the power to make a difference. Evensmall changes in our daily behavior can help preventgreenhouse gas emissions without affecting ourquality of life. In fact, they can help save us money.

Taking the time to flip a simple switch or turn offyour tap may seem insignificant, but if everyonetook the time to do it every day, the results wouldbe considerable. Review these tips for ways toincorporate energy-saving measures into your

everyday routine. Although individual decisions may seem small in theface of global threats and trends, when billions ofpeople join forces in common purpose, we can makea tremendous difference.

Most important contributor to global warming, carbondioxide pollution has reached levels the Earth has notexperienced in three to five million years.

Extreme weather events (storms, floods, and heatwaves) become more frequent and intense, along withrising temperatures and sea levels. New York CityMayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a $20 billion

storm surge protection plan for that one city alone.

International Energy Agency says we are headedtoward an increase in global temperatures of 6.5 F to

9.5 F, most of it during the lives of young people alivetoday.

Almost every scientific paper on global warming in thelast 20 years97 percentagrees it is mainly caused

by human activities, like using coal and oil for energy.

    Some facts and figures

The production of one kilogram of beefrequires 15 thousand litres ofwater (93% green, 4% blue, 3% grey water footprint). There is a hugevariation around this global average. The precise footprint of a piece ofbeef depends on factors such as the type of production system and thecomposition and origin of the feed of the cow.

The water footprint of a 150-gram soy burgerproduced in theNetherlands is about 160 litres. A beef burger from the same countrycosts about 1000 litres.

The water footprint of Chinese consumptionis about 1070 cubicmeter per year per capita. About 10% of the Chinese water footprintfalls outside China.

Japanwith a footprint of 1380 cubic meter per year per capita, hasabout 77% of its total water footprint outside the borders of the country.

The water footprint of US citizensis 2840 cubic meter per year percapita. About 20% of this water footprint is external. The largestexternal water footprint of US consumption lies in the Yangtze riverbasin, China.

The global water footprintin the period 1996-2005 was 9087 Gm3/yr(74% green, 11% blue, 15% grey). Agricultural production contributes92% to this total footprint.

Water scarcity affects over 2.7 billion people for at least one montheach year.

The vast amount of food going to landfills makes a significant contribution to global warming. Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year

approximately 1.3 billion tonnes gets lost or wasted. Every year, consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food (222 million tonnes) as the entire

net food production of sub-Saharan Africa (230 million tonnes). The amount of food lost or wasted every year is equivalent to more than half of the world's annual

cereals crop (2.3 billion tonnes in 2009/2010). Food loss and waste also amount to a major squandering of resources, including water, land, energy,

labour and capital and needlessly produce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warmingand climate change.

In developing countries food waste and losses occur mainly at early stages of the food value chain andcan be traced back to financial, managerial and technical constraints in harvesting techniques as wellas storageand cooling facilities. Thus, a strengthening of the supply chain through the supportfarmers and investments in infrastructure, transportation, as well as in an expansion of the foodandpackaging industry could help to reduce the amount of food loss and waste.

In medium- and high-income countries food is wasted and lost mainly at later stages in the supplychain. Differing from the situation in developing countries, the behavior of consumers plays a huge partin industrialized countries. Moreover, the study identified a lacking coordination between actors in thesupply chain as a contributing factor. Farmer-buyer agreements can be helpful to increase the level ofcoordination. Additionally, raising awareness among industries, retailers and consumers as well asfinding beneficial use for save food that is presently thrown away are useful measures to decrease theamount of losses and waste.

In the United States 30% of all food, worth US$48.3 billion (32.5 billion), is thrown away each year. Itis estimated that about half of the water used to produce this food also goes to waste, since agricultureis the largest human use of water. (Jones, 2004 cited in Lundqvist et al., 2008)

United Kingdom households waste an estimated 6.7 million tonnes of food every year, around one thirdof the 21.7 million tonnes purchased. This means that approximately 32% of all food purchased peryear is not eaten. Most of this (5.9 million tonnes or 88%) is currently collected by local authorities. Most of the food waste (4.1 million tonnes or 61%) is avoidable and could have been eaten had it beenbetter managed (WRAP, 2008; Knight and Davis, 2007).

In the USA, organic waste is the second highest component of landfills, which are the largest source ofmethane emissions.

The amount of food wastedin the United States isstaggering. In 2010, morethan 34 million tons of food

waste was generated, morethan any other materialcategory but paper. Foodwaste accounted for almost14 percent of the total

municipal solid wastestream, less than threepercent of which wasrecovered and recycled in2010. The rest 33 milliontons was thrown away, making food waste thesingle largest component ofMSW reaching landfills and

As of 2011, 1.3 billion tons of food, about one thirdof global food production, are lost or wasted annually.

There are nearly one billion malnourished peoplein the world, but the approximately 40 million tons

    Junk food is food with a lot of fat or sugar, or both;

chips or other fried foods. Junk food is not good

for your body; it's either fattening or it can make

you really sick however, you should keep in mind

that all non junk foods are healthy

    Harmful Effects of Junk Food

The regular consumption of junk food is the leading factor in obesity

Obesity is second only to smoking as a cause of death in America.

46% of Canadian adults are either overweight or obese,

Consumption of soft drinks containing sugar has been linked to weight gainand an increased risk for development of type 2 diabetes.

Studies have revealed that obese people have twice the rate of chronic health

problems as people of normal weight. This includes a 100% greater chance of

developing Type 2 diabetes, 50% increased likelihood of developing heart

disease. Obese men are nearly 90% more likely to get colon cancer.

Junk food diet is a major cause of heart diseases. High cholesterol resulting from junk food puts undue strain on the liver,

causing long-term damage to this essential organ.

Research has suggested that diets high in fat may also impair essential brain

    functions, like concentration and memory.
