A frightfully special symphonic journey into spookiness and suspense! The biggest surprise is that you know this classical music already—it’s made you cringe, given you goosebumps, and made you jump out of your chair. From Hitchcock’s Psycho to Disney’s Fantasia, plus our friends the Smurfs, it’s a good-spirited classical version of fright night. What better night to welcome the emerging musicians of the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra? Come in my lovelies, it’s nothing, just cookies and milk!

This concert should really be called “The Greats,” as there are so many of them connected to this event. Haldan Martinson, principal violinist with the Boston Symphony, one of the great orchestras of the world, returns to roots in Saskatoon to play Mendelssohn’s masterful concerto.
Then Maestro Kirk Smith, principal conductor of Chicago’s Black Music Repertory Ensemble, leads the orchestra in a performance of Schubert’s wondrous Ninth Symphony, which truly is “The Great.” The SSO also pays tribute to the late Edmonton composer Malcolm Forsyth, one of the greats of 20th century Canadian music.

Fernando Varela Classical to Classic Rock
Maestro Victor Sawa conductor
Fernando Varela tenor with Ron Paley keyboards & Jack Semple guitar
“I’ve worked with every giant in the business, and just when you think you’ve already heard everything, even I was blown away.” - David Foster
Fernando Varela’s triumphant performance in our 2010 Pops Series was an evening of soaring vocals, ranging from Roy Orbison and Elvis, to Journey and Queen, topped off by thrilling operatic showpieces. David Foster, who guided the careers of Dion, Bublé, Bocelli, Groban and others, met Fernando in 2011, resulting in an appearance with David Foster and Friends in Las Vegas in November, where he stopped the show. He has since done the same with Foster in Hawaii and LA. This just the beginning—Fernando’s
charisma uplifts the soul! Ron Paley returns on piano and guitar man Jack Semple adds his signature stylings as well. It’s the
ultimate bridge from classical to classic rock!

Messiah
Maestro Victor Sawa conductor
Saskatoon Chamber Singers directed by James Hawn Meara Conway soprano Cassandra Warner mezzo-soprano Michael Harris tenor Chris Kelly bass
There is little music as spiritually transcendent as Handel’s Messiah. Composed in 1741, it nevertheless remains the source of new revelations and inspiration each time it is heard or performed. Its performance by the Saskatoon Sym-phony is a holiday tradition. We are pleased to have the Saskatoon Chamber Singers returning for an encore of last season’s stirring concert and we also welcome four accomplished soloists. The highlight for many is the magnificent roof-raising Hallelujah Chorus, but the entire evening is one of timeless and uplifting expression, made even more extraordinary in the soaring beauty of historic Third Avenue United Church.

Silence is Golden The Mark of Zorro!
Brian Unverricht, conductor
Rick Friend, piano
The Silence is Golden silent movie event returns with the 1920 film ‘The Mark of Zorro,’ directed by Fred Niblo, presented with a live orchestral accompani-ment by the Saskatoon Symphony. Back by popular demand is the silent movie music man himself, Mr. Rick Friend, direct from L.A.
The film stars energetic Douglas Fairbanks as the masked hero of the people fighting an oppressive colonial government. Fairbanks contrasts the athletic acumen of Zorro with the foppishness of Zorro’s alter ego, blazing the trail for many physical comedies and hidden identity tales to come.
This unique experience is presented in the Spanish courtyard ambience of the Roxy Theatre, one of Canada’s last atmospheric movie palaces, located on Saskatoon’s growing cultural corridor.
