Soroptimist International Mackay held our first ever Sewathon for the “Bags for Change” program and it was an absolute hit! We were so happy to meet the lovely ladies who gave up their time to cut, iron and sew recycled fabric bags which we handed over the St Vincent De Paul Society.
As this is an ongoing project, we will be hosting a Cutathon on August 10 at the Jubilee Community Centre meeting rooms from 10am – noon. The fabric will then be bundled with a pattern and made available at the Mackay Sewing & Craft Centre at Fourways, Nebo Road for anyone who would like to sew the bags.
If you or someone you know would like to be involved, get in touch and we can tell you more!
August 12 will be our next Below the Belt meeting which is the support group for women who have suffered or are suffering from gynaeological cancers. Join the ladies for a cuppa and catch up. Phone Jenny on 4942 1712 for more information.
Are you coming along to the Seniors Expo? Come and meet the ladies from Soroptimist International Mackay and see our ‘intriguing’ joint display with Below the Belt. It’s sure to get some interest!
Don’t forget our next business meeting is on Wednesday, August 7 from 5:30pm at the Jubilee Community Centre meeting rooms. At this month’s meeting we will also hold our second “Learn & Laugh” event for 2019 where Tania Begg of Impact Improvements teaches us how to create the perfect elevator pitch.

Anxiety and your gut health Lesley Rix - Naturopath
Probiotics are bacteria that are good for our health and well-being.
Recent studies have shown that restoring a healthy balance of bacteria is one of the most effective ways to support mental health.
As naturopaths, we have always thought that the gut was central to health, but we didn’t understand exactly how the gut microbiome signalled to the nervous system...but now we do.
Gut bacteria play a role in not just gut health. They are important for increasing tryptophan and serotonin levels and reducing inflammation. Depression can be seen as inflammation of the brain.
Studies have already shown that people who suffer with anxiety often also display symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, too, such as bloating, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. This provides significant evidence for a strong gut-brain link.
There are a lot of ingredients that naturally contain probiotics, such as Kombucha, Kefir, Korean kimchi, Sauerkraut, Japanese miso, pickles and some diary products like yoghurt or fermented milks. Probiotic supplements are also widley available. Some strains are more suitable for different conditions and not all are usefull and in a few instances can make matters worse.
On a final note, there is no benefit in putting little creatures in if we do not feed them. A diet high in fruits and vegetables will provide lots of fibre for them to survive and thrive.
If you would like any more information on which strains are more appropriate for which conditions contact me or ask your naturopath. [email protected] 0400 547 958
