Do you know someone who has inspired you with their achievements in the last year?

Whether it be on the sporting field, in their professional career, or through their volunteering efforts in the community, now is the time to recognise them.

Nominations are now open for the Mackay Regional Council Australia Day Awards.

Mayor Greg Williamson encouraged residents to get behind their local heroes.

“It’s time to say thanks to the people who help keep the community spirit alive and make us proud to call our region home,” he said.

“Without these people, many of our local community groups and sporting organisations would struggle to exist.

“The Australia Day Awards are an opportunity to let them know their hard work is appreciated and congratulate them on their achievements.

“Everyone who is nominated for an award will be invited to a special ceremony on the eve of Australia Day to thank them for their contribution to the community and announce the winners of the awards.”

There are eight award categories this year including:

• Citizen of the Year

• Young Citizen of the Year

• Arts and Culture Award

• Community Group Award

• Environmental Achievement Award

Join Soroptimist International of Mackay to “Walk the Talk” Community against Violence 2016 - United Nations 16 days of Activism (November 25 to December 10)

Violence against women and girls is a global epidemic Women and girls suffer sexually, economically, physically and at times pay the ultimate price – death.

Women and girls are denied equality and security. Violence against women and girls is not confined to a single country or social group of people; violence occurs in all fabrics of society across the globe.

Soroptimists world-wide continue to advocate to governments and raise awareness of these issues. We are calling on governments to stop the perceived tolerance towards gender violence, create awareness campaigns to

promote non-violence and gender equality and increase budgets to domestic violence service delivery organisations.

We will champion male leaders to demonstrate that the new norm is zero tolerance level for domestic violence.
