I've tried everything to get out, to save myself, nothing worked. The only thing left is to make this videotape that I will give to my son, he to his, and so on, until a time machine is invented and someone watching this will come and get me out of this.“ VREMEPLOV / TIME MACHINE is an artistic respond to a video message sent out by a group of young Sarajevans during the war in 1993. With a lot of black humor they imagine their escape from their besieged hometown with a time machine. On 11 th June 2018 exactly 25 years after the video was sent out Thieme activates the time machine again with the help of a translator. Nihad Kreševljakovic, one of the young Sarajevans videotaping the message in 1993, recites the appeal from the past to Sarajevo 2018. The call “Get me out of this” addresses our present (again). How will we react? Thieme developed VREMEPLOV / TIME MACHINE on the basis of an intense engagement with the Library Hamdija Kreševljaković Video Arhiv, a private collection of amateur videos made during the war in Sarajevo (1992-1996). VREMEPLOV / TIME MACHINE at the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is supported by Goethe-Institut Bosnien Herzegowina & Böll Stiftung Landesbüro Bosnien-Herzegowina VREMEPLOV / TIME MACHINE is part of the initiative IZMEĐU NAS / BETWEEN US by Nihad Kresevljakovic, Jasmina Gavrankapetanovic and Clarissa Thieme that invites scholars, artists and the public to work with the Video Archive Hamdija Kreševljaković, a collection of video testimonies documenting life under siege in Sarajevo 1992 to 1996. The initiative proposes to create a critical platform to democratize the process of archiving and engage with people’s shared memories.
