Dear Friends of Da Camera,
With the 2018-19 season, Da Camera explores the multiple ways in which the present and future are informed by the past. In both chamber music and jazz, there is an ongoing dialogue with the great composers and performers who came before us and serve as inspiration. This continuum of time is especially meaningful to me this season, as it marks my 25th as Da Camera’s artistic director, and so I find myself both looking back and ahead. Continuing to make connections between music and art, literature, theater and ideas, we offer musical programs inspired by poet John Ashbery, artist Cy Twombly and the explosively creative birth of the 20th century in Vienna 1900. With such masters as Richard Goode, Jordi Savall, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Chucho Valdés and the New York Philharmonic String Quartet we are in the presence of performers embodying the greatest of musical traditions; and the younger generation finds its voice through pianist Aaron Diehl, composer Matthew Aucoin, vocalist Jazzmeia Horn and the genre-bending Russian Renaissance – all showing evidence of new ways of interpreting the past we inherit and making it relevant to today’s world. This continuum of past and future in art continues to be a powerful source of inspiration to me personally, and I look forward to sharing it with our adventurous and ever-expanding Da Camera audiences in this very special season.

Danish String Quartet (Frederik Øland, violin; Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, violin;Asbjørn Nørgaard, viola; Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin, cello)
After their stirring Da Camera debut in 2015, the Danish Quartet returns with traditional Nordic folk music, the dramatic Quartet No. 2 by Denmark’s greatest living composer – Hans Abrahamsen – and Beethoven’s sweeping, powerful Quartet in F Major, Op. 59. With their technical and interpretive talents matched by an infectious joy for music-making and “rampaging energy” (The New Yorker), the quartet is in demand worldwide.
“A concert that was as comprehensively rewarding as any chamber-music performance in recent memory… Do not lose track of this group: Even by today’s high standards, it oers something very special.” – The Boston Globe
Dr. Lonnie Smith TrioSaturday, November 3, 2018, 8:00 PM
Cullen Theater, Wortham Theater Center
Dr. Lonnie Smith stands tall as the foremost master of the Hammond B-3 organ. At the age of 75, he is a paragon of innovation and experimentation. The 2017 NEA Jazz Master may consider himself old school, but Smith paints new hues on the canvas of tradition, as evidenced on his spirited recent live album All in My Mind. The album is his second for Blue Note since his 2016 return to the legendary label where he made a name for himself in the late 1960s, as a sideman and as a leader with his own soul-jazz classics.
“Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to the Blue Note label with an album that reveals the enduring appeal of organ soul…[Smith] showcases a variety of organ-soul stylings [and] demonstrates the versatility and currency of the style.” – The Wall Street Journal
“He really seems to be up to something bigger than music, and older, and deeper. An hour and a quarter in his presence, and you start thinking about the nature of time, ancestors, the circulatory system.”– The New York Times

Music of Brahms and Schoenberg
Conceived and directed by Sarah Rothenberg
Abigail Fischer, mezzo-soprano; baritone to be announced; Sarah Rothenberg, piano
Projections: Sven Ortel
Lighting: Marcus Doshi
Set and costumes: Marina Draghici
“For a long time a form had been in my mind which I believed to be the only one in which a musician might express himself in the theatre. I called it, in my own private language, making music with the media of the stage…” – Arnold Schoenberg
In this immersive Da Camera original production, spectacular dream-like visuals and powerful musical perfor-mances transport you to Vienna 1900. Gustav Klimt’s sensual paintings and Max Klinger’s erotic prints are a window into a world of new ideas. More than a concert, In the Garden of Dreams takes you inside an imagined Viennese music room where a solitary pianist playing Brahms’s last works gradually transforms into the symbol-rich garden of Schoenberg’s The Book of the Hanging Gardens. In the Garden of Dreams moves from dawn to the dark of night, from a protected Viennese interior to a decaying landscape where Schoenberg’s haunting song cycle reaches its shattering conclusion as reality, dream, memory, and hallucination merge in the mind of an obsessed lover.

Winner of six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Chucho Valdés has been a key figure in the evolution of Afro-Cuban jazz for the past 50 years. In 1972, Valdés released his fourth album, a trio recording with bass and batá drums entitled simply, Jazz Batá. Decades later, Chucho Valdés returns to the Jazz Batá sound – blending jazz with traditional rhythms of the sacred batá – in a journey to discover new interpretations of classic forms.

Le Concert des Nations Manfredo Kraemer, violin; Charles Zebley, transverse flute; Philippe Pierlot, bass viol; Rolf Lislevand, theorbo; Luca Guglielmi, harpsichord; Jordi Savall, bass viol and direction
Early music titan and visionary performer Jordi Savall leads Le Concert des Nations in music inspired by the 1991 film about gambist/composer Sainte-Colombe, which starred Gérard Depardieu as his upstart pupil Marin Marais. The film introduced many listeners to the astoundingly beautiful music of the early French Baroque. Savall and his Le Concert des Nations performed the soundtrack music and they return to this sublime repertoire in a concert that features poetic music for solo and multiple viols, graceful dances, dramatic character pieces and more.
“Jordi Savall testifies to a common cultural inheritance of infinite variety. He is a man for our time” – The Guardian

A rare showing of Cy Twombly’s monumental painting, The Treatise on the Veil, is the occasion for this unique musical event at the Menil. The timeless Greek myth of Orpheus entering the underworld in search of his deceased beloved, Eurydice, has inspired artists for centuries – from the beginning of opera in Italy to today. From Monteverdi to early electronic music through late 20th-century compositions, this program explores the powerful influences of mythology on visual art and music – in time past and time present.

Julia Fox, soprano; Daniel Belcher, baritone; Brentano String Quartet (Mark Steinberg, violin; Serena Canin, violin; Misha Amory, viola; Nina Lee, cello); James Pugh, trombone; Sarah Rothenberg, piano; Matthew Strauss, percussion; Je Milarsky, conductor
Da Camera joins forces with renowned American composers and musicians to celebrate John Ashbery’s legacy with works that reflect his playfulness, wit and humor. Widely considered the greatest American poet of his generation, Ashbery visited Houston for a Da Camera concert during Sarah Rothenberg’s first season as artistic director. Joan Tower’s Holding a Daisy was written for Rothenberg, as was Charles Wuorinen’s Ashberyana, recorded by Da Camera for Naxos.
“bright, vibrant baritone … an uncommonly wide range which encompassed some astonishingly easy, ringing high phrases.” – Opera Today on Daniel Belcher
“It is a remarkable achievement when music as abstract as this can grab and not let go of the listener's attention. …Ashberyana… is a striking work” – American Record Guide

Daedalus Quartet (Min-Young Kim, violin; Matilda Kaul, violin; Jessica Thompson, viola; Thomas Kraines, cello); Brentano Quartet (Mark Steinberg, violin; Serena Canin, violin; Misha Amory, viola; Nina Lee, cello); Sarah Rothenberg, piano
Since Houston Grand Opera's revival of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's opera, The Passenger, the posthumous reputation of this brilliant composer continues to grow. Weinberg's Piano Quintet, symphonic in scale and dramatic scope, is one of the greatest works of this form of the 20th century. Don’t miss this rare performance, as the celebrated Daedalus Quartet makes its Da Camera debut with Artistic Director Sarah Rothenberg. Da Camera favorites the Brentano Quartet are joined by the Daedalus Quartet in their Da Camera debut for Mendelssohn’s sunny Octet, one of the most beloved works in all of chamber music.
“One of the finest young groups to emerge in our current golden age of string quartets.” – The New Yorker on the Daedalus Quartet
“Perfection may be an impossible goal in art, as in life, but the Brentano comes close” – Cleveland Plain Dealer
“Rothenberg’s performance...was exemplary ... She has a particular anity for 20th-century music, performing these works with relaxed, understanding, authority.” – The Houston Chronicle
“a hidden 20th-century master…perhaps as prolific as Shostakovich and hardly less gifted.” – The New York Times
“one of the most interesting composers of the 20th century... of equal strength and occasionally even more personal in his music than Shostakovich.” – Gidon Kremer
