SARA DAVID RINGLER ARTIST STATEMENT Image making is a way to interact and reflect my experience. Through printmaking I arrange alter and layer forms of shapes and color. I explore variation and abstractly combine a variety of media making visual connections. I am constantly exploring new variations. Nature, the figure and architecture merge abstractly to create metaphoric associations. I explore process as a creative challenge and use it as an avenue for expressive possibility incorporating multiple images, to create visual stories of memory, place and time. I integrate various printmaking techniques such as the painterly monotype with the bold graphic directness of etching. The monotype process is direct and fluid and allows for an instantaneous dialog with the work as it is being created. Successive layering of images, adding or wiping away ink is a way to form each image in an organic balance. As a professional printmaker and art professor teaching drawing, printmaking, design, book arts and papermaking at Cape Cod Community College for over 20 years, I have enjoyed an ever- inspiring interaction between creating and teaching art. I am the mother of three adult children and three grandchildren and have lived on Cape Cod with my husband for over forty years Printmaking enables me to build on themes and to create series of related images. In that way I can tell a story and relate to time and sequence. I work intuitively and responsively to each piece and investigate variations in composition and content. Generally there is idea I build on and I use the process of printmaking to find my images. I begin with a general concept and look for a feeling of space and atmosphere using various materials and inks. I layer plates with multiple printing, and pull together elements to find balance in the compositions. University of Massachusetts, S. Dartmouth, MFA 88`. SUNY Buffalo, N.Y. BFA 69`
