What is noise ? Noise can be an undesirable sound that can

damage hearing, and can be a very dangerous effect to our health because it may affect a large group of people in industry, construction, and other environments e.g.in education, musical area (discotheque) and service industries.

Noise can be source of risk of workplace accidents, work-related stress and combined with other risk factors at the work place can damage health in both the long and short term.

The two important components of noise are the frequency, measured in Hertz (Hz) and intensity, measured in decibels dB(A).

These are then relative to exposure i.e time spent in the area and proximity to the source of noise.

The noise origin In the industry area the sound can has the originlike: pneumatical; mechanical (metal-on-metal impacts, separation

vibrating machine panels etc.); electrical (close the electrical switch, magnetical

circuit noise at the power station); hydraulical (flow, pump aspiration); aerial (ventilation, blowing);

Noise diminution at the source

Elimination or diminution of noise in the work place is a company responsibility and should be done not just because it is required by law.

Noise diminution at the source should be seen as the most important part of noise control activity (planning, maintenance of equipment).

The 2003/10/EU Directive article 5,”starting from the technical evolution and the existing possibility of noise control at the source”, requires that “the risk arising from exposure to noise shall be eliminated at their source or reduced to a minimum”.

General ways for noise diminution at the source

Apply solutions for noise reduction - increase the distance between the fixed and

moving parts - change rigid parts with elastically spares Shock or damping control - protection and insulation of moving parts.

The elimination of unnecessary vibration - elimination or repair of vibrating parts e.g. loose machine covers

The general ways for the noise diminution at the source

Isolate vibrating machinery or components from their surroundings

- use suspension systems with absorptive role (anti- vibration isolation) - replace the rigid coupling elements with flexible ones

Equipment and technology modification - change the noisy components with other quieter ones

Avoid the sudden pressure change - change pneumatic equipment with electrical equipment

The identification procedure by the risk assessment

A risk assessment is a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people. This is done for every function within the factory.

The dimension and the type of risk assessment depends on the activity at every work place.

The risk assessment defines risks and hazards.

e.g. the risk is noise, the hazard is deafness also for example:

- Do the noise properties contribute to work-related stress?

Yearly risk assessment and post assessment at the noise expose use the ,,5 steps” method

1. Look for the risks (danger type example noise) and the potential hazard 2. Decide who might be harmed and how (young people, woman, public, contractors, visitors, etc.) 3. Evaluate the risk and decide whether the existing precautions are adequate or whether more should be done (represent good practice, meet the standards set by a legal requirement) 4. Record your findings 5. Review your assessment and revise it if necessary

Noise exposure solution (reduction)

- remove the packing table from the winding machine neighborhood

Shock subjugation (keep under control)

- change the wheels on the trolleys, careful place the spacers on dye carriers location

- maintain equipment using planned maintenance periodically replacing parts (change the worn bearing)

- replacement of aluminum

- purchasing new type of winding machine with pallets winding had (the working sound level smaller approximately by 15 dB(A))

The control procedure

The 2003/10/EU Directive requires for the employer that ,, the risk arising from exposure to noise shall be eliminated at their source or reduced to a minimum (comes into force in national legislation on 2006.15.02.)

Employers are obliged to keep control and check periodically if the existing precaution for the noise control and diminution are adequate, and work efficiently.

The measured noise level in september 2003 in dye house it was 89,29 dB(A), in september 2004 it was 84,22 dB(A), and in september 2005 it was 89,51 dB(A) because of addition of new machinery.

The higher noise level which was measured in 2005 is being examined to find a solution to lower the value.

Winding I

The measured noise level in september 2003 at the packing table in winding area was 81,22 dB(A),in september 2004 it was 85,26 dB(A) because of the production growth. This was reduced to 83,79 dB(A) in september 2005 when the table was moved.

Winding II

The measured noise level in september 2003 in winding area at the winding machine was 89,02 dB(A),in september 2004 it was 90,56 dB(A) because of production level growth. Implementation of planned maintenance work at the winding machine reduced this to 87,24 dB(A) in september 2005.
