Royal Dutch Shell (Shell Aviation)
“We innovate with a focus on customer benefit. Airports want smooth and safe operations, which in turn allow airlines to take their customers to their destinations without delays. Skypad is one of the ways we help them achieve this and help them be more competitive”
Shell Aviation developed a mobile cloud based application to automate the ticketing process for airplane refueling operators. The Skypad app, built on SAP Cloud Platform, is used at the airport apron(area around the aircraft operations) for digitizing operations and transfer data in real-time to the SAP invoicing back end system. This helps to make the refueling process faster and provides better data quality and lesser invoice errors. The application, Skypad, digitally connects flight operators and vehicles and airliners into the ticketing process.

Royal Dutch Shell (Shell Aviation)
Shell Aviation re-imagines aircraft refueling around the world
Royal Dutch Shell commonly known as Shell, is a British-Dutch multinational oil and gas company headquartered in the Netherlands and incorporated in the United Kingdom. It is one of the six oil and gas "supermajors" and the sixth-largest company in the world measured by 2016 revenues (and the largest based in Europe).
Shell Aviation runs refueling operations at the world’s busiest airports, and serves 2 million aircraft per year at 850 airports in 32 countries. Shell refills an aircraft every 14 seconds, and supplies an average of 72 million liters of fuel a day.

Solution Overview
Every day 3.6 billion people travel by aircraft, whether that’s for business or pleasure. Around 18 billion dollars worth of goods move by aircraft everyday, around a third of all world trade by value.
For Shell Aviation to compete in the competitive environment of its customers (Airline industry) digitization is critical
From the very beginning of Shell e-aviation project objective was to get real-time data directly from the apron into their global SAP system, and ensure that aircrafts are re-fueled efficiently (as airports are a dynamic environment dependent on short turnaround times an minimum delays).
The Skypad app, built on SAP Cloud Platform, is used at the airport apron for digitizing operations and transfer data in real-time to the SAP invoicing back end system. This helps to make the refueling process faster and provides better data quality and fewer invoice errors. The application, Skypad, digitally connects flight operators and the back office.
The Skypad application pre-populates all information for each flight that requires refueling. This provides operators with the sequence of flights that he/she has to fuel. When an operator is refueling a plane, they have all the necessary information prepopulated on the tablet. All they need to enter are the meter readings and time -- and to obtain the necessary signatures from pilots or maintenance engineers.

Solution Details
The functional solution enables digitization of end-to-end airport operations. The
core features are: digital ticket capture on tablet, stock and tank farm management,
reconciliation and reporting to local bodies, staff rostering, integration to airlines,
integration to eCommerce platform, integration to static and dynamic flight
schedules, multi-fuel provider delivery and stock management feature. All of which
are done in up to four different international languages.
The technical features of the solution are: industrial grade usability on a zone-1
intrinsically safe IATA standard mobile tablet, offline capability, seamless user
experience and quick adoption with minimal training and deployment efforts, full
automatic meter integration with leading meter vendors, minimal number of data
inputs (which helps in reducing errors in invoicing and improves aviation invoice
quality), digitally signing on glass and electronic Proof of delivery in PDF formats,
real-time data transfer to the system of invoicing.
The underlying SAP Cloud Platform helps achieve significant scalability and faster
deployments and higher overall availability. The SAP technology allows Shell to
work faster and with greater agility; using data to garner business insights.

Quote
“The SAP cloud platform has provided global scalability -- which is great -- but it has
also given us the flexibility to meet particular local requirements. ”
-- Victoria Guy, VP Downstream Cost Strategy, Shell Aviation
“We now use the Skypad application in a way which simplifies the operators job by
inputting the flight data into the flight schedule; which is then uploaded to the
Skypad. When the operators are out refueling they have all the information pre-
populated, and all they need to enter are the meter readings and the times -- and to
obtain the necessary signatures.”
-- Jodie Boardman, Shell Interplane Operations Manager, Liverpool Airport

Deployment details
• Shell worked with SAP innovative Business Solutions to develop the Skypad solution, and SAP Business Transformation Services to deploy it.
• Shell went through a design thinking process to design the Application from a user perspective, and shared wire frames with the operators to get early feedback to the design.
• In Q3/Q4 of 2017 SAP has been helping Shell Aviation to perfect transmission of fuel delivery tickets for customers by leveraging mobile and cloud technology.
• An app with a mobile front end, that connects to the ECC backend and integrates with non-SAP systems, was identified as the optimal solution. See details about the DCS app below.
• Subsequently they will begin using SAP Cloud Technology to track fuel supplies in real time; and produce analytics.
• DCS connects to backend Shell GSAP (SAP ECC) and can integrate with non-SAP systems.
• The app was deployed at the end of Q2 2017.
• Automates aircraft fueling processes at 12 airports -- including those in the UK, the Netherlands, Singapore and Malaysia.
• By end of 2017, Shell Aviation hopes to use the Skypad solution in over 150 airports.
• Processes 1 million tickets/transactions annually.
• Adopting SAP cloud technology means new systems of innovation can be introduced on top of other backend investments and systems of records.
• The reliability and availability of the platform is critical -- it’s a 24 by 7 by 365 operation – there are always flights that are being refueled.
