SAPANST:AToolEveryConsultantShouldConsiderIf you have been working with SAP, youmay already knowhowtimeconsuminganddauntingitcanbetosearchforanycorrectionnoterelatedtoanissueorabugintheapplication.Basically, it involvesmanuallysearching forapplicablenotesinapileofSAPnotesatSMP.Sometimes,even if you findone, itmaynotbewelldescribed,causingusers togo intoatrialanderror process. Fortunately, SAP provides someuseful tools thatcanaid insearching fornotes.Oneof themiscalledAutomatedNoteSearchTool(ANST).

WhatisANSTandhowdoesitwork?

ANSTisausefultoolthatallowseasysearchingofcorrectionnotes fromSAPby replicating the issue in thesystem.ThiscanbedonebyaccessingANST_SEARCH_TOOLwhereyoucould specify the program or transaction involved and startthe replication process. Once the issue is replicated, it willdisplay a selection of application components involved in itsexecution. You will have to choose the component orcomponentswhereyou think the issuebelongs toandANSTwill start to lookup for correction notes thatmay help solvetheissue.Userswillhavetheoptiontoimplementaparticularcorrectionnoteornot.

ANSTFeatures

1. IntegrationofNoteAssistant(SNOTE)

Fromtherelevantcorrectionnotesthatwillbedisplayed,youcanchooseand implementanotebydoubleclicking it in theDownload Note column. A popup request will show up toconfirmyouraction.Afterconfirmingthedownload,ANSTwill



automaticallycontactnoteassistant (SNOTE) thendownloadthecorrectionnoteinpreparationfortheimplementation.

2. AllowsSpecificSelections

Ifyouarepresentedwithtoomanyirrelevantcorrectionnotesfor a particular component, you can reduce them by beingmorespecificwhenselectingaparticularcomponent.Youcanalso view the objects found in the trace (replicated version)pertaining to each subcomponent and then search for notesapplicable to a single object. Doing so will eliminate asignificant number of irrelevant notes, making it easier tosearchfornotesthatwillhelpsolveanissue.

3. HelpsinCustomerCodeIdentification

Not all issues you will encounter may be related to thestandard SAP code but to customer code such as userexists, fieldexists,Badi implementationormodifiedstandardcode. Identifying such error is easier with the use of ANST.This can be done by clicking on the Customer Code buttonanddoubleclickingontherowthatcorrespondsto theobjectyouwanttovieworedit.

4. Allowstracestobereusedordeleted.

Once an issue is replicated in the ANST, it creates a tracethat can be reused at any point in time.Past traces can beaccessed by clicking on the Open Trace button and thetraces you created as well as their descriptions will bedisplayed.Ontheotherhand,youmayalsodeleteatracebysimplyclickingtheDeleteTracebutton.

5. Providesanoptionforcustomizingtables

Iftherearenocorrectionnotesavailableforaparticularissue,theproblemcouldbeduetocustomizingissueswhichcanbecorrected by changing the setting. For this purpose, ANSTdisplays a list of customizing tables by clicking on theCustomizingtableicon.Onceatableisselected,youwouldbe able to access transactionSM30which has a table viewwithfillednamesoralistofviews.

6. Allowscustomizationofsearchparameters

For optimum performance when searching for notes, ANSTalso allows you to control certain search parameters. Forinstance,youcanactivateordeactivatetheobjectthatwillbeused for searching notes by clicking on the ObjectsCustomizing icon. There is also an option to consider the

AdvantagesoverManualSearching

ANSThasseveraladvantagesforitsusers:

1. Userswillno longerbebotheredabout thinking for theright keyword in searching for correction notes. Inmanual searching, wrong keywords can lead tomanyirrelevantnotes.

2. ANST saves you the time from running through anumberofOSSnoteswhich in theendmight alsobeuseless andwill not solve the issue.Notes displayedthrough ANST are already filtered and can be readilyimplementedwhenneeded.

3. The list of custom codes which may include userexists,BADIandenhancementsare justaclickawayduringtherecordingprocess.

4. Youwill no longer have to spend timeusing the layerdebugging functionality just toseehowandwhere thecodesarebeingused.

5. Withmanyhelpfulfeatures,ANSTistotallyfree.
