The Palazzo is visible at the top of Positano, bathed by thefirst rays as well as the last light of the day. This is one of themany qualities that inspired the Vescovi, or bishops, toconstruct this Baroque palazzo centuries ago. A handsome,elegant facade faces the receding landscape of the AmalfiCoast to the west a vista of successive hills in everdiminishing shades green, blue and grey punctuated with theclearly visible Tre Faraglioni of Capri on the horizon. All threeof the villa's expansive front terraces afford consideration ofthe romantic, ever-changing panorama of this dramaticcoastline.

The Palazzo is reached on foot following characteristicshallow stairs up from the town, authentic, charming andperhaps tiring to some. Protected from the bustle and tumultof the village, Palazzo Santa Croce is a world unto itself. Animposing architectural achievement in its own right, thePalazzo enjoys an equal distinction with its full restoration.Each wall and ceiling is painted with the utmost care andattention to amplifying the considerable architecturalrefinements of the building.

The interiors are sumptuous with each work of art andpainting carefully selected for its appropriateness to the styleand period of such a significant villa. Many artifacts remainfrom the original owners, including a substantial tabernacle,and the grand central staircase is embellished with statuary.The symmetry and careful proportion of the interior isamplified by the restoration of each set of original painteddouble doors. More than fifty original four- and five-foothigh cotta vases, originally for storing wine, oil and grain, werereclaimed from the interior during the restoration and havebeen reused in this thoroughly modern vacation villa.
