Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society Established 1951 Helping You to Become a Better Grower October 2013 Newsletter Next Meeting Wednesday October 2nd 7:30 PM The October meeting speaker will be Samantha Kha Root. Samantha Kha Root has been interested in growing plants since she was a small child, when she loved raising flowers and vegetables from seed. Her interest in plants led her to begin exploring cacti and succulent plants. Then, over 16 years ago, she became interested in orchids. Today, Samantha grows orchids and also has a very extensive collection of succulent plants, mainly from South Africa. Samantha became enamored with slipper orchids early on. She has put together an extensive collection of Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums, primarily focusing on species. She started making Paphiopedilum crosses about 14 years ago, and has raised and flowered many of her own crosses. For the past 12 years she has been making Paphiopedilum crosses for The Orchid Zone, using the Zone's extensive breeding collection. The Orchid Zone is located in the hills of the Monterey Peninsula, and is mostly known for Paphiopedilums. Not as well known is the Zone’s cultivation of many other genera as well, including Odontoglossums, Miltoniopsis, Masdevallias, Phragmipediums, and Zygopetalums. As always, be prepared for a unique selection of orchids for the opportunity table, provided by Samantha and Terry Root. You'll want to be at this meeting for Samantha's as-always-terrific presentation and opportuntity table!

September Meeting

The September meeting was the

SCVOS Annual Auction featuring

auctioneers Jeff and Dennis.

They are entertaining enough to

be on cable TV. The quality and

number of the plants sold were

better than I can ever

remember. There were so many

great plants bought by those

that attended that I doubt

anyone went home without

some great additions to their

collections. This meeting is a

don't miss opportunity. We all

thank everyone concerned.

Orchid Facts

Vandopsis (Vdps) a

monopodial genus of five species ranging from Northeast India,

Southeast Asia, South China and

New Guinea. The name means

“Vanda-like.” Members of the

genus can be terrestrial, lithophytic or epiphytic. The type species is

Vandopsis lissochiloides. It was

first described by Gaudich in 1829.

It was later reclassified into its present generic name by Pfitzer in

1889. Synonyms to this genus are

Fieldia, Hygrochilus and Stauropsis.

The flowers of this genus have

fragrance and fleshy substance. Flowers are

mostly of a yellow background with pink or

purple spots. Vdps undulata is the only

species with a predominantly white flower.

Inflorescences of the species are from 8 in

(22cm) to more than 8 feet (2.5 m) long.

Jay Pfahl describes the culture of the

genus to be generally similar to Vanda:

ample water and fertilizer with bright to full

light. Vdps undulata appears to be the only

species that can be grown cooler basing it on

the altitude of its natural habitat.
