I have been marveling at the artistic and creative Der Auspuff covers for the past several months. No other region, none, anywhere, has a more distinctive and glamorous monthly publication than does SBR. At times recently, our covers have instigated greater interest and more compliments than the Panorama photography. Th e reporting on the inside pages is equally impressive, as new and veteran article writers submit intriguing, beguiling and tantalizing accounts of past club events and announcements of future activities. Hats off to Janice Herndon, John Alfenito and Ray Jordan for a most professional and alluring publication!

Equally rewarding has been the continued high level of interest by our members in all our activities, as witnessed by the sellout registrations for the Griffi th Park Observatory, Morro Bay, and Jay Leno Show tours during the fi rst two months of this year. Oscar and Toni Briones, as chairs of our Activities Committee, have put together an outstanding agenda for us throughout the year. Th e many individuals who are taking responsibility for the planning and execution of our monthly events deserve our thanks and gratitude.

All of us are pleased that so many members have taken our challenge to participate in our competitive events. Our classes for beginners in autocross and rally are going to be sellouts, and we know that the actual events in latter April are going to have the highest attendance ever. Sign up for all our events and join in on the fun and fellowship that develops. You will create memories that will last the rest of your life.

We do have one sad note to report, however. We have been advised by Bob and Karen Campbell of their decision not to continue the Ventura Show. After seven years of dedicated and exemplary eff orts, they too deserve our thanks and sincere gratitude for their support of our club. Th at support was not limited to the generous annual fi nancial contribution to our coff ers, but included an ongoing moral commitment and physical labor on our behalf. How many times have we observed Bob assisting at our breakfast meetings, and how many times did we witness Karen seize an opportunity to aid in our administrative and managerial needs? Too many to count, but they were indeed noticed and appreciated. We extend our heartfelt good wishes for all their future endeavors.

Finally, we have a request to all our members, and it may not be for the most pleasant topic. A few of our members recently have suff ered through minor and major illness and accidents, and we have not learned of them until there was full recovery and resumption of participation. We would like to be informed when any regular or associate member is ill or laid up for any reason. Th e Board of Directors wishes to make contact with such persons for the sole reason of off ering get well wishes and/or companionship and friendship when one is not feeling so well. We hope that our interest will pick up the spirit and hasten the recovery prospects. Our club is not just about cars; it is about its members.

What a nice way to paraphrase the slogan “it’s not the cars, it’s the people.”

February was a great month for an event. For those of you who could not attend, Nancy and Doug Maletz organized and executed a fabulous trip to Morro Bay. We had picture-perfect weather and incredible Porsche roads to drive. As you will discover from reading the article, the participants created friends and memories not soon forgotten.

Have you signed up for the Rally and the Autocross in April? If you have never done one before and would like to learn, or if you want to improve the skills you already have, you can attend one or both of the schools to prepare participants for each of these driving events. Now that we have our Porsches, this is an opportunity to drive our own cars and learn the best way to handle them and any mishaps that might occur on the road. By attending the schools and events, we can all become safer drivers and enjoy driving our Porsches even more. Registration forms for both the schools and

driving events are at the back of the magazine for you to fi ll out and mail in.

I have signed up for both the rally and autocross schools and the events. I plan to be at least in the running of the top times this year for you competitive guys out there. I hope to see you there.

Member Mike Pomerantz printed our last Der Auspuff . As Chet and Joan Yabitsu can attest, he goes the extra mile to get Der Auspuff out on time. Mike delivered the February issue to Chet and Joan one evening in a downpour that even ducks were avoiding. You will see Mike at the Camarillo breakfasts, so please welcome him to the team.

I would like to thank member George Lehtinen for writing this month’s technical article on fi re extinguishers. Fire extinguishers might not be the fi rst thing a person thinks about when purchasing a car; however, this information can make the diff erence at one of those inopportune times. Look for more technical articles in the upcoming Der Auspuff issues.

I wish everyone a Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, and I hope to see you at the next breakfast or event.

EXPLORINGMORRO BAY

By Nancy Maletz

Th e beginning of 2008 brought fl u, colds, much needed rain, winds and chilly air. So when the going gets tough, the tough of PCA-SBR hit the road, this time taking us to the beautiful central California coastal city of Morro Bay. Th ere were 27 cars (including one Cayenne owned by Steve and Janet Kaller that was the star of the weekend) and 48 people that met in the Sears parking lot in Santa Barbara on January 18 at 1:15 p.m. As we readied ourselves, a CHP motorcycle cop pulled in, surveyed the cars, then swung up to four of us and cautioned us to be good children and to obey all traffi c laws. Another nice addition was Gary Cropp, from the San Diego club, who only has 8,000+ miles on

his ten-year-old 911. He said that the trip sounded so wonderful, it was worth adding on some mileage. By the end of the weekend, this SDR member was singing the praise of our region as he was showered with warm hospitality and new friendships.

Off we went up through the San Marcos Pass, down through Solvang, across the 101 to the best ride this side of Disneyland

as we ran the gauntlet of Santa Rosa Road. We hit the 101 and slid across through San Luis Obispo onto Highway 1, reaching Morro Bay at 4:45 p.m. After checking in at the hotel, we all met in the lobby at 5:15 p.m. and actually walked to the Great American Fish Company where we had steak, salmon, snapper and chicken. As the hotel was on the waterfront, we were able to catch a brilliant sunset and spy a few otters and sea lions in the bay on our walk. Some things you just can’t see from a car, not even from a Porsche. We’re still trying to fi gure out how the Yabitsus and Brovskys were served dinner a full hour ahead of the rest of us. Was that a twenty dollar bill I spied dangling from Chet’s pocket as he off ered up his dessert to the highest bidder of the hungry club members?

After dinner, the Weavers hosted an “all-you-can-drink” blender party in their hotel room, pushing the limits for the Guinness book of records as to how many people you could fi t in a hotel room with two queen beds (that’s another story). We made it to

34.Th e next morning we had breakfast

on our own, then met in the parking lot at 8:45 a.m. for the magnifi cent drive up through the vineyards of San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties on Peachy Canyon Road.

We regrouped at the entrance to Fort Hunter-Leggitt where all of the men ran to the porta-potties while the “weaker sex” waited for civilization. Dave Mosesson took it upon himself to jostle the porta-potty Gary Weaver had entered just at his most vulnerable moment. No one had suff ered

any real humiliation…until now!We entered Fort Hunter-Liggett and

headed to lunch at the Cabl Café on the base, where we had turkey sandwiches, burgers (thanks to Brian Kavanagh for your patience and Bill Sampson for your lack thereof ), soup and salad. Carol Mathieu gave one of our fi ne soldiers, Spike, cheap thrills by letting him drive her car for a couple of miles, although we did hear him ask where the clutch was! After lunch, we headed over to tour Mission San Antonio de Padua, established in 1771 by the Spanish explorer, Don Gaspar de Portola. Gary Gasperino “accidentally pushed”

an innocent cat into the fountain in the courtyard. We later tarred and feathered him; Gary, not the cat!

We then resumed our drive for the best part as we weaved our way through Nacimiento-Ferguson Road up and over the mountains to an aerial view of the Big Sur down below. I had just fi nished

commenting to husband, Doug, how glad I was that we were on the inside of the road, just as we hairpinned around to the outside. Mark Smith later said he had to pry wife Jeannette’s hand off the car door handle. We all made it down safely, and stopped to regroup overlooking the cliff s. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful state. At this point, we split up as a group, agreeing to meet for dinner in Cambria at 6:00 p.m.

Some of us stopped at the elephant seal breeding grounds in San Simeon, while others continued on to Cambria and shopping. We dined at the Cambria Pines Lodge in our own banquet room and a buff et of salmon, tri tip and chicken. Th e party ended around 8:00 p.m. back at the hotel. We are one wild group!

A great time was had by all, with lots of laughter, joking, eating, and general playing around. What’s better than hanging with a great group of people who live to laugh and

enjoy life? Here’s to next year and doing it one more time. Let’s hope the weather will be as picture perfect.

Special thanks are off ered to Mike and Karen Turek for taking the point during

most of the driving, and to Oscar and Toni Briones for their assistance in the management of the tour.

Phyllis and Gary Weaver hosted the group in their room. This was a photo of just one side of the members attending. What a party.

Th e diff erence between a little damage from some oil spilled or leaked onto a hot engine part and the total loss of your treasured Porsche might be your fast action with a hand-held fi re extinguisher. Th ere is no “best” type of extinguisher for every car and every occasion, but there are major diff erences between diff erent types, and each type has its advantages. Your budget, your automobile investment and your estimation of how likely you are to use the extinguisher, among other variables, will all infl uence your choice.

Any extinguisher is probably better than no extinguisher, but before you pick up just anything, here are some fi re extinguisher basics. Th e diff erent classes and sizes of fi res an extinguisher is rated to put out are listed on the side of the extinguisher. Th e bigger the number, the bigger fi re that can be put out or the greater the safety margin for an inexperienced user on a smaller fi re. Th e common classes of fi re are:

Class A: Ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper and plastic.

Class B: Flammable liquids such as gasoline and oil.Class C: Energized electrical equipment (at voltages high enough

to shock.)Class D: Combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium,

potassium and sodium.

In automobiles, the most serious and likely fi re is the Class B fi re, namely fl ammable liquids such as gasoline, engine oil, transmission and brake fl uids, etc. Cars also contain a good deal of plastic. Exotic and high-tech Porsches can sometimes utilize combustible metals such as magnesium or titanium which burn with extremely hot fi res

that no common extinguisher is capable of extinguishing. Small amounts of water may even make these fi res worse. If such a Class D metal fi re is suspected, fi re departments may send two engines or use a hydrant because of the need for very large amounts of water. If those resources aren’t immediately available, fi remen might avoid the potentially toxic fumes and just try to confi ne the fi re to the single vehicle rather than attempting to put it out. (Moral: Put out the small fi re quickly before it gets to the magnesium.)

A little training in the use of an extinguisher will help insure your safety and improve your fi re fi ghting skills. Many communities, through their local fi re and police departments, off er Community Emergency Response Team (“CERT”) training which includes a module dealing with putting out small fi res plus actual use of an extinguisher. Safety is paramount, and sometimes the smartest thing to do is to back away and call 911. CERT training will help you decide whether to fi ght or fl ee. CERT training is recommended. Remember that if you do even a small “puff test” with a dry powder type extinguisher, the extinguisher must be professionally recharged since the powder gets into the valve and causes a slow leak of the pressuring agent. Cheap, plastic extinguishers cannot be recharged and often do not have a pressure gauge to insure reliability.

Ideally you should carry the fi re extinguisher in a place where it is quickly available in an emergency, or even after an accident, but not in the engine compartment where access could be blocked by the fi re you need to put out.

Th anks to Charlie Johnson, the Public Information Offi cer of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District and to Rick Joy at Joy Equipment Protection, Inc. in Carpinteria for their help in preparing this article. Rick can get you any type of extinguisher and, if you mention your membership in the PCA, he will give you a 10% discount. His telephone number is 684-0805. And don’t forget an extinguisher for your “alternate” vehicles. (Any remaining errors remain solely that of the author.)

Ratings in the accompanying table are for a car-sized unit approximately 14 inches long by 3 inches in diameter, which is often referred to as 2-1/2 pound size.

Please refer to the Fire Extinguisher Comparison chart on the next page.

Camarillo

Breakfast Meeting By Oscar and Toni Briones

It was an incredible sight: Th e beautiful Porsches parked on the tarmac and the adjacent turf of the Way-Point Café against the backdrop of the mountaintops blanketed with snow. Th e sky was clear, and the cold air made many attendees huddle inside for warmth.

By the time our president, Nick Liakas, kicked off the meeting, it had warmed up enough to make the presentations outside. Nick introduced member Ralph Treadwell, who just logged 300,000 miles on his 1977 911. Great job to Ralph and his car!

Nick then acknowledged the presence of Kent Bodin’s 18-year-old daughter, Tori Bodin, and her boyfriend, Dylan Roberg. Kent, who is one of our long-time members and an ongoing active contributor to the club, has been bringing his daughter to the meetings since she was a child, just about as long as Ralph has been driving his 911.

Next, Nick presented Steve Krein with an award as the 2007 Zone 8 Full Concours C-9 grand prize winner. Mike Furnish, who has contributed to our club in the capacity of Safety Offi cer, Driving Instructor and Insurance Director, was presented with an award as the 2007 Zone 8 Concours d’ Elegance NS Class Champion.

Nick brought back Steve Krein, who described how local CHP Offi cer Tony Pedeferri was struck by a car in the line of duty and asked for contributions to aid the offi cer and his family. Th rough the course of the meeting Steve used his newly presented award cup to collect approximately $800 from our members on behalf of Offi cer Pedeferri, his wife and two daughters.

Dave Stone, our Membership Chairman, informed us that we had 134 people, 74 Porsches and 1 Jaguar in attendance, along with a number of new members. Tom Sutphen and his daughter Christy came from Westlake Village in their ’07 Cayman. Frederick Mueller from Agoura Hills brought his ‘01 996 Carrera, and Erin Cornell from Ventura drove her ‘07 Cayman. First time Camarillo attendee Patrick Johnston from Moorpark brought his ’01 996 C4 Cabriolet, and prospective members Mike and Natty Sipes from Camarillo

joined us in their ‘78 911 SC Targa. Member Wayne Greko and his wife, Houri Greko, brought her father Mohammad Kharazi from Iraq as a guest. Our new Der Auspuff printer, member Mike Pomerantz and his wife Adrienne of Sir Speedy Printing in Oxnard, were also in attendance.

As our Activities Chairman, I informed all that the February tour of the Griffi th Observatory is sold out and I urged members to sign up for the waiting list in case someone cancels. Upcoming events include the Whale Watching trip aboard the Condor Express on March 29th, the April 12th Rally School for beginners to be held at the Moby Dick Restaurant following our breakfast meeting, and the Autocross Beginners School on April 19th at the Camarillo Airport. Special attention was directed to the Santa Barbara Region Zone 8 Rally on April 26th and, our premier destination, the Grand Canyon and city of Sedona trip May 23-26th. Th ere is also our New Members Picnic on June 22nd at Freedom Park in Camarillo.

Vice President Dave Mosesson informed us of an open house on March 29th, the same day as our whale watching trip, sponsored by wheel manufacturer HRE located in L.A. Th ere will be a BBQ and a facility tour as well as special parking for Porsches wearing their wheels.

Th anks to everyone who attended the breakfast and made it such a fun event.

February Santa Barbara Breakfast MeetingBy Jeanne McNair

It was another beautiful, bright and clear California “winter” day at the Moby Dick Restaurant. Th e sun was warm and the hills were very green as a result of the recent rains.

We had another large group attend, but not quite as large as the Moby Dick inaugural breakfast last month. Th ere were a total of 65 people in attendance with 49 Porsches. We parked our Porsches adjacent to the restaurant and, all in all, the transition to our new venue has been smooth and successful. Th e service has been wonderful, and the restaurant managers are very attentive to any and all of our requests.

President Nick Liakas started the meeting by introducing new members Joe Wilcox of Santa Barbara who drives a 2005 Boxster S, and Tom Siegel of Santa Barbara who just purchased his 1993 Carrera 2. Also introduced was, at the

time, potential new member, Nick Kite of Carpinteria who has a 1999 Boxster. Th e meeting and the list of club activities must have really impressed Mr. Kite because at the conclusion of the meeting Nick also became a new member.

Activities co-chair Oscar Briones

informed attendees of the upcoming events including the trip to Griffi th Observatory in February, the Whale Watching trip on the Condor Express in March, and the rally school in April. He introduced Michael Brovsky who also reminded us about the Porsches and the Deep Blue Sea Whale Watching trip on March 29th.

Michael distributed fl yers with pictures of and information on the Condor Express, which will take members on the 2.5 hour excursion out to see the whales. Michael also announced that Walt Branscome of Santa Barbara Auto Group will be hosting an

open house at Santa Barbara Auto Group immediately following the completion of the Whale Watching trip. He will have the new Cayenne GTS on display.

Announcements were also made regarding the Auto Cross School on April 19th, the trip to Sedona and the Grand

Canyon scheduled for Memorial Day weekend and the New Members Picnic scheduled for June 22, 2008, at Freedom Park in Camarillo.

Carol Mathieu spoke about the upcoming P.M.S. trip to the CBS Studios for the Price is Right show on February 18, 2008. Mike Hodson, in his capacity as the volunteer coordinator for Santa Barbara Region, told us about the Festival of Speed in Fontana, which will occur on the fi rst weekend in April. Mike is looking for volunteers to help with this event, so please contact him if you are interested.

Former president Joe Carastro informed us that the LA Literature and Memorabilia Show at the Los Angeles Hilton takes place on February 23rd and that there is a Porsche Swap Meet on February 24th in Costa Mesa. I reminded all that the Goodie Store can order name badges for both current and new members. As we still have a number of 2008 Calendars, we have reduced the price to $15.

Th e meeting concluded with many members visiting out on the pier, admiring the many Porsches parked there and enjoying the warm, sunny weather.

Judy and Will Hoag along with George and Roberta Lehtinen

Jennifer and Jim Mosley (front), Steve Mascagno, Jerrod Bradley and Ken Just enjoying hot drinks, good conversation and ready for breakfast.

SCHOOL FOR AUTOCROSS BEGINNERS APRIL 19, 2008; 10 A.M. CAMARILLO AIRPORT

LEARN HOW TO RALLY! JOIN SCHOOL FOR BEGINNERS!

APRIL 12, 2008, 10 a.m. The Moby Dick Restaurant, Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara Region is privileged to have among its members multi-time PCA NATIONAL RALLY CHAMPIONS Joe Boucher and Joe Schneider. Join them on April 12, 2008 and learn how you can develop skills to compete in rallies.

Rallying challenges your abilities to pace your speed, judge your time and distance, and navigational skills. A rally is not a race; it is a punctuality challenge. The rally school will provide instruction on how to interpret and execute written tour instructions, to anticipate tour landmarks, to control time and distance. Rallying in your Porsche is an exciting, fun- filled adventure that you cannot miss.

There will be a training rally following the school that will give you a taste of what you can expect when you participate in the April 26 Zone 8 Rally to be hosted by our region. You will receive individual analysis of your mini rally results from our instructors. The school will end around 2 p.m.

Th e Optimist CreedPromise Yourself-

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the

presence of trouble.

SBR’s R.U.F. Committee (Retired and Unemployed Folks) had to navigate their way past wolves, grizzly bears, red foxes and other exotic wildlife to visit with Th e Tonight Show host Jay Leno on January 30, 2008. Th at is a true and literal statement.

Twenty-nine club members experienced yet another memorable excursion as it commenced its journey westward to Burbank. Th e daylong adventure began with a group late breakfast at Th e Way-Point Café at the Camarillo airport. At 10:30, car pools were arranged and the drive along the 101 and 134 highways was launched. Th e group did not encounter any traffi c delays and reached the NBC studios one hour later for its scheduled tour of the studios. Two groups were formed, and uniformed pages escorted the ensemble through the back corridors and stages, some of the latter having been home to historic broadcasts of live and taped television performances.

We also caught a glimpse into the wardrobe and makeup operations, and trekked through paraphernalia and furniture used on the sets of news broadcasts, westerns, mysteries and especially soap operas such as Days of Our Lives. Nothing is ever thrown away, as even the minutest

detail has to be archived and available for reuse. Th is includes candles, lampshades, desks, bedroom sets, etc.

Th ere is more detail regarding the wardrobe. Th e area is sealed from wondering eyes lest someone see next week’s dresses on the soaps and is able to foresee the plot changes. Wigs held center stage, as did masks ranging from Planet of the Apes to face doubles for Jay Leno.

Here are some questions we encountered: 1. What was the fi rst color broadcast? 2. What was the fi rst taping with a live audience? 3. Why does the NBC peacock now face to the right instead of to the left (as did the previous version)? 4. Why are studio stages built only on one level? You would have known the answers if you took part in the R.U.F. activities.

After the studio tour the group was ushered into Studio 1 for the taping of Th e Tonight Show With Jay Leno. It was while we were waiting to enter that we had our fi rst encounters with the timber wolves, Russian grizzly bear and the other animals mentioned above. Th ey were to be guests on the show and they received plenty of room to enter the stage before we were allowed to proceed. It is hard to explain the feeling

one gets as a huge wolf brushes against you, or a grizzly looks at you and growls – only two feet away.

Th e interior of the studio was strongly air conditioned – no, it was refrigerated – and that coupled with the long wait outside the stage door in the cool January temperatures left many of us quite cold; indeed, some were shivering. One-half hour before the taping was to begin, Jay Leno appeared and joked and played with the audience. It was a fun and loose exchange of comments aimed at relaxing and then motivating the audience of 384 to cheer and applaud as loud as possible once the show got under way. Other staff members carried the ball once Jay went behind the stage to change into his suit and tie, and by the time the taping started the audience was whooping it up. Th e one-hour show fl ew by as the monologue, skit on Super Bowl toys and guest performers received standing ovations from the audience.

If you are not already on the R.U.F. mailing list and would like to participate in future events, please contact Nicolas Liakas at [email protected] We would love to have you take part in our monthly adventures.
