Sanremo The City -‐ History Originally a Roman seQlement on the Aurelia road
• Once the Roman semlement of Matu(a'or Villa Matu(ana, Sanremo expanded in the Early Middle Ages when the popula=on moved to the high grounds. The nobility built a castle and the walled village of La Pigna to protect the town from Saracen raids.
• At first subjected to the countship of Ven=miglia, the community later passed under the dominion of the Genoese bishops. In 1297 they sold it to the Doria and De Mari families. It became a free town in the second half of the 15th century, aoer which it expanded to the Pigna hill and at Saint Syrus Cathedral. The almost perfectly preserved old village remains.
• Sanremo remained independent from Genoa for a long =me. In 1753, aoer 20 years of fierce conflicts, it rose against the hegemonical amempts of the Genoese Republic. At that =me the lamer polity built the fortress of Santa Tecla, situated on the beach near the port. The fortress was used as a prison un=l 2002. It is now being transformed into a museum.
• Aoer the French domina=on and the Savoy restora=on (1814), Sanremo was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. Since the middle of the 18th century, the town grew rapidly, in part due to the development of tourism: the first grand hotels were built and the town extended along the coast.

Sanremo The City – History Loved by Russian Aristocrats, ArFsts and ScienFsts
• Italo Calvino, the Italian writer who had spent his childhood in Sanremo, described the atmosphere of Sanremo in the Thir=es as: “different from the rest of Italy,… s(ll inhabited by old English, Russian grand dukes, eccentric and cosmopolitan people.”.
• The eccentric and cosmopolitan people Calvino talks about had begun to arrive in Sanremo in the second half of XIX century, in the footsteps of the Russian Baron Boris d’Uxkull, hosted in the villa of Countess Adele Bianchi Roverizio in the winter 1858-‐1859. The Tsarina Maria Aleksandrovna chose Sanremo as her winter residence, and Sissi, the Empress of Austria, was used to insert it as a step of her journeys through Europe. The amendance of these wealthy and cultured companies has leo in San Remo the heritage of outstanding Art Nouveaux Villas, the Casino, the golf course, some evoca=ve local names such as Corso Imperatrice, dedicated to the Empress Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna who donated the palm trees in 1885, the Corso degli Inglesi, the Hotel des Anglais.
• One of the most famous guest, the scien=st and inventor Alfred Nobel, arrived here in 1892. He bought the villa that the pharmacist Pietro Vaccheri had built twenty years before, renamed it My Nest and was living there un=l his death (1896). The villa is now property of the Municipality and opened to the public.
• At a short distance from Villa Nobel, the park of Villa Ormond houses a rich collec=on of exo=c plants and sugges=ve Japanese garden, result of the twinning with the city of Atami. The villa was bought in 1875 by the Swiss tobacco merchant Michel Luis Ormond, to please his beau=ful French wife. The statues in the south side of the park commemorate two other important guests of San Remo: the Mexican journalist and writer Ignacio Manuel Altamirano and the king of Montenegro Nicola I.
• The Sicilian playwright and Nobel Prize winner Luigi Pirandello lived in Sanremo in 1933-‐34 and was appointed ar=s=c director of the Casino

Sanremo The City -‐ Climate The City of Flowers and of Perpetual Spring
• Sanremo enjoys special weather condiFons throughout the year due to its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and the presence of the Mari=me Alps right behind the town. Monte Bignone, the highest peak, is some 1,300 m above the sea level. The town's climate is described as one of 'perpetual spring', with warm days and chilly nights and limle varia=on of temperature around the year.
• These condi=ons make Sanremo one of the most amrac=ve tourist des=na=ons on the Italian Riviera. Tourist amrac=ons are open year-‐round; and it has numerous and well-‐equipped sports facili=es.
• Sanremo is known as the City of Flowers (la Cimá dei Fiori), this being another important aspect of the economy of the city.
• The nearby towns of Arma di Taggia, Bordighera and Ospedalel are also involved in the cul=va=on of flowers for the Interna=onal Flower Market of Sanremo

Sanremo The City – What to See The Old Town
• Visit duraFon: 3 hours
MAIN SIGHTS • La Pigna, the old medieval town, is full of covered alleys, limle squares, and terraced
houses together with dull colours and long silences which in turn create emo=ons and sensa=ons unknown to mass tourism. Founded around the year 1000 La Pigna’s crowded streets and medieval for=fica=ons resemble the image of a pine cone. La Pigna has to be discovered on foot star=ng from piazza Santo Stefano and heading to the sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa.
• Madonna della Costa Sanctuary, on the hilltop above la Pigna, can be seen from most places in Sanremo and is a symbol of the city. A beau=ful cobblestone mosaic, da=ng from 1651 leads the way to the sanctuary. The sanctuary dates to the seventeenth century and the dome was erected between 1770 and 1775.
• San Siro, the cathedral church of Sanremo, is also the city's oldest church. Although it is thought that the first church on this site was built in 811 AD, the actual structure dates to the early 12th century. It was built in a Romanesque style but was heavily modified into a rich Baroque church in the 17th century, similar in style to Santa Maria degli Angeli. Restora=on work in 1901, following damage by a fire, completely stripped the church of its Baroque façade and interior and returned its original Romanesque look.
• Palazzo Borea D’Olmo is considered one of the most important Baroque edifices in Liguria west of Genoa. It took on its rich Baroque form during 17th-‐18th century renova=on. The actual structure, though, dates from Mediaeval =mes. The palazzo is named aoer the noble family, Borea d'Olmo, who owned it, but nowadays houses the Civic Museum of Sanremo, which exhibits archeological finds and historical objects from the city.

Sanremo The City – What to See The capital of La Belle Epoque
• Visit duraFon: 3 hours MAIN SIGHTS • The two-‐kilometre-‐long Corso degli Inglesi is one of the most beau=ful and
quietest residenFal streets of San Remo. It is lined with villas da=ng back to the 19th and 20th centuries and mostly belonging to the Bri=sh people. The spectacular architecture and the aristocra=c gardens covered with flourishing fruit trees which characterise Corso degli Inglesi are s=ll able to fascinate the eyes of a modern tourist.
• One of the most popular tourist amrac=ons in Sanremo is the Villa Nobel, the house where Alfred Nobel spent the last five years of his life. This lovely Moorish-‐style villa overlooks the Mediterranean and is surrounded by flower beds, palm trees, and an orange grove. Aoer his death, the city purchased the property, using it for gatherings of Nobel Laureates. Today, the villa and Nobel's laboratory are being converted into a museum.
• Villa Hanbury has a beau=ful open-‐air botanical garden that is home to more than 5800 tropical species including plants from other con=nents. The large garden is filled with over two thousand species of flowers surrounding four kilometers of paths. Included here is the Japanese Garden, the Australian bush (with eucalyptuses as tall as 30 meters), a rose collec=on, and the Garden of Perfumes
• The Casino, built in 1905 by french aechitect Eugene Ferret, is a magnificent example of liberty style. Opposite the Casino, the Russian Orthodox Church is a legacy of the Russian community and an example of bizan=ne style.
• Via MaQeo], the main commercial street in town, full of elegant bou=ques and jewelries, restaurants and bars. Many bou=ques and local shops are in the town centre. A market is held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings in Piazza Eroi Sanremesi.

What to see in the sorroundings of Sanremo Bussana Vecchia, the Cra`smen’s village
• Distance from the Port of Sanremo 9 km – 15 minutes by car • Visit duraFon: about 2 hours • Bussana, an ancient village built near the Town of Flowers, was completely destroyed by
an earthquake. Its houses, which had been built around a castle, were severely damaged. Its surviving inhabitants decided to abandon the village because access to the village was impossible. As years went by, the ruins were covered by a thick vegeta=on. Bussana remained a dead village un=l the 1960s when a Piedmontese ar=st -‐ Clizia -‐ semled here and founded a circle of ar=sts.
• So Bussana began to live again: craosmen and ar=sts coming from Italy and Europe started to restore its houses and streets, though respec=ng its original Medieval structure based on narrow and winding alleys and houses built with stones and bricks.
• Nowadays Bussana Vecchia is a unique place: here you can find every type of craosmen's and ar=sts' workshops, ranging from goldsmith's to designer's or botanist's. The village has been literally reborn and every year its peculiar atmosphere amracts thousands of tourists.

What to see in the sorroundings of Sanremo Triora, the Village of the Witches
• Distance from Sanremo: 40 km – 50 minutes drive • Visit duraFon: about 2 hours • Triora, listed as one of the most beau=ful villages in Italy, is a medieval small town, built
upon a hill, north of Sanremo. Its intact atmosphere is made more mysterious by the notorious trial of 1587, in which many women from Triora were accused of being witches, and 5 of them were tortured and executed.
• Triora owes its name to the La=n tria ora, or three mouths: those of the Cerberus represented in its coat of arms. According to some it refers to the three rivers at whose point of confluence the village is situated, while others believe it derives from the three main products (wheat, chestnuts and grapevines) on which its economy is based.
• The old village, although par=ally deserted and s=ll scarred by the destruc=on wrought by the Germans in 1944, con=nues to exert a strong fascina=on. Speaking of magic, there are many places which give off an indescribable air of mystery, of harmony with natural forces.
• The main product of the area is bread, in its characteris=c rounded shape. • The area's alpine cheeses are very tasty, among which the bruzzo stands out, one of the
most ancient cheeses of the Alta Valle Argen=na: obtained from the natural fermenta=on of ricoma, with a slightly spicy taste, it is an excellent condiment for pasta and goes very well with bread and fresh tomatoes.

What to see in the sorroundings of Sanremo Dolceacqua and Apricale along the Nervia Valley
• Distance: Sanremo -‐ Dolceacqua 23 km – 35 minutes Dolceacqua – Apricale 7 km – 10 minutes drive
• Visit duraFon: Dolceacqua 1 hour; Apricale 1 hour • Dolceacqua is one of the medieval villages of the Nervia valley and it's placed along the
river of the same name. Its oldest part, dominated over by the Doria's castle, is called Terra and it's situated at thefoot of Mount Rebuffao. The newest part of the village, called Borgo,is situated on the opposite bank of theriver along the road that climbs up the valley. They are connected by a magnificent bridge across the Nervia.
• Dolceacqua is full of ar=sts' workshops, craos, scented wine and specialty stores, a tru cup of tea for the shopaholics and also for those who are simply looking for a unique souvenir to take with them or give to friends
• Apricale is unique. Picturesquely arranged around the small square, it has a stepped appearance, with the old stone buildings rising on several levels: thus it happens that the entrance is at the top floor, and you need to go down the stairs to get to the rest of the house.
• Apricale means poetry made in the streets, ar=st’s studios, a refuge for travellers who have found a delighwul place for listening to the elves or owls in the woods.
• Rising behind the square is the Oratory of San Bartolomeo, which has a beau=ful Renaissance polyptych of the Madonna of the Snow (1544). Opposite the oratory is the Parochial Church, of medieval origin but almost en=rely redone in the 19th century. Above stands the Castle of the Lizard, en=rely restored and now used as a cultural center: it has a hanging garden and is surrounded – like the upper part of the village – by an impressive circuit of walls with three magnificent arched gates.
